The Sword of Welleran by Lord Dunsany
(Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany)
with classic illustrations by the great Sidney Sime Sometimes indeed there arose among the tribes young men who doubted and said: "How may a man for ever escape death?" But graver men answered them: "Hear us, ye whose wisdom has discerned so much, and discern for us how a man may escape death when two score horsemen assail him with their swords, all of them sworn to kill him, and all of them sworn upon their country's gods; as often Welleran hath. Or discern for us how two men alone may enter a walled city by night, and bring away from it that city's king, as did Soorenard and Mommolek. Surely men that have escaped so many swords and so many sleety arrows shall escape the years and Time." And the young men were humbled and became silent. Still, the suspicion grew. And often when the sun set on the Cyresian mountains, men in Merimna discerned the forms of savage tribesmen black against the light, peering towards the city. Now there was a little boy in Merimna named Rold. I saw him first, I, the dreamer, that sit before my fire asleep, I saw him first as his mother led him through the great hall where stand the trophies of Merimna's heroes. He was five years old, and they stood before the great glass casket wherein lay the sword of Welleran, and his mother said: "The sword of Welleran." And Rold said: "What should a man do with the sword of Welleran?" And his mother answered: "Men look at the sword and remember Welleran." And they went on and stood before the great red cloak of Welleran, and the child said: "Why did Welleran wear this great red cloak?" And his mother answered: "It was the way of Welleran."

Edward Plunkett, the author usually known as Lord Dunsany, was one of an old Anglo-Irish aristocratic family. He had a long and interesting life, but is nowadays usually remembered as the author of some very distinctive fantasy works. Background and Biography The Plunkett Family and Dunsany Castle Dunsany Castle is found in County Meath in Ireland. The original castle was begun by the Normans shortly after their invasion of Ireland in 1169, and was a centre of Norman power in the area. In the 15th Century, Sir Christopher Plunkett acquired the lands and castle of Dunsany by marriage, and his son Christopher became the first Lord Dunsany in 1439. The lands and title have remained in the family ever since.

The King of Elfland's Daughter: Fantasy Masterworks 15 by Lord Dunsany
(Gollancz, £6.99, 241 pages, paperback; first published 1924; this edition 8 March 2001.) Here are just a few of the things that we have to thank Lord Dunsany for introducing to the modern fantasy genre with this novel. A mythical, magical kingdom inhabited by elves and impossible creatures - A fearless prince overcoming his powerful enemies with an enchanted sword - Wild unicorns which graze at the edge of strange, haunted forests - And comedy trolls. In other words, the very stuff out of which modern sword and sorcery has been fashioned. Lord Dunsany, it seems, has a lot to answer for. The King of Elfland's Daughter - "one of the seminal fantasies of the century" according to John Clute, now reprinted as part of Gollancz's series of groundbreaking fantasies - has been a victim of its own success. The blurbs on the back of his collection of short stories, Time and the Gods (also part of the Fantasy Masterworks list), show the breadth of Dunsany's influence with praise by writers as different as HP Lovecraft and Katherine Kerr. With his stories of timeless gods whose names can drive men mad and ancient heroes taking up their quests with swords and magic, Dunsany helped to spawn the likes of Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. With the half-realized faerie world of Elfand in this novel, he paved the way for the full-scale fantastic landscapes of Tolkien and his imitators. In terms of modern fantasy, Dunsany's seed has spread far and wide.

and The Tortoise by Lord Dunsany Lord Dunsany, was a prolific Irish author who is considered by many to be one of the major influences on fantasy and horror fiction of the 20th century. A lifelong writer, Dunsany explored writing in all its forms: short stories, novels, essays, plays, fiction and non-fiction, all of which were appreciated by a worldwide audience.
Born Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett in July of 1878, Dunsany grew up among wealth and privilege. His father, John William, the 17th Baron of Dunsany, was a scholar and mechanical engineer, who installed the first Irish telephone system, and was also an inventor and popular political figure. Dunsany grew up on the estate of Dunsany and later attended both Eton and Sandhurst. Upon the death of his father in 1899, Dunsany assumed his position as the 18th Baron of Dunsany and, after serving in the Coldstream Guards during the Boer War, returned to Dunsany in 1901, where he lived for the remainder of his life.
The early work of Lord Dunsany is made up of short fantasy stories, many of which share the same imagery, history and references, making them some of the earliest fantasy works to be set in a "Shared Universe." All the stories in his first collection

Lord Dunsany: Master of Pen and Sword by Robert T. Tuohey Various conceptions, from times-of-yore right up to the present, have been made concerning what exactly is a “true” or “complete” man. In the Western tradition, we begin with the Greeks, most particularly Plato, where emphasis has been placed on the attainment of arête (excellences). As history rolls onward, we have the stoic Roman, the admirable - if severe - medieval Christian, and the “universal man” of the Renaissance (bless me, our Ford in heaven, I decidedly omit any mention of the anti-man of industrialism). Indeed, an embarrassment of riches! But, for all that, it seems, to this writer’s mind at least, that something is missing.

    • It was quite dark when he went by the towers of Tor, where archers shoot ivory arrows at strangers lest any foreigner should alter their laws, which are bad, but not to be altered by mere aliens.
The Book of Wonder , Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller
I imagine that as one penetrated out from some enormous forest of the tropics, the wild beasts would become fewer, the gloom would lighten, and the horror of the place would slowly lift. Yet as one emerges nearer to the edge of London, and nearer to the beautiful influence of the hills, the houses become uglier, the streets viler, the gloom deepens, the errors of civilisation stand bare to the scorn of the fields.
Where ugliness reaches the height of its luxuriance, in the dense misery of the place, where one imagines the builder saying, "Here I culminate. Let us give thanks to Satan," there is a bridge of yellow brick, and through it, as through some gate of filigree silver opening on fairyland, one passes into the country.
Indeed when we trace it all back to its origin we find at the beginning of this unhappy story a man who was only an emperor and wished to be something more. He would have ruled the world but has only meddled with it; and his folly has brought misery to millions, and there lies his broken dream on the broken earth.

Reviews Game Index Forums Press ... Store REVIEW OF THE KING OF ELFLAND'S DAUGHTER Gather ‘round, children. It’s time for yet another classic fantasy novel review. Up for this week is The King of Elfland’s Daughter , by Lord Dunsany. (That’s Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, eighteenth Baron Dunsany, to you and me.) Dunsany is another of those ill-remembered pre-Tolkien fantasy novelists who helped shape the whole genre. His stories combine the epic scope of post-Tolkien novels with an almost Lovecraftian appreciation for the bizarre and wondrous. Writing in the early twentieth century, Dunsany sits between the very early weird fiction of Bierce, Chambers, and even Poe, and the first modern fantasy works of Tolkien, Moorcock, and Leiber. He is a product of the former, and helped create the latter, and it would be a great crime should he be forgotten. The King of Elfland’s Daughter is Dunsany at his best, able to combine ancient mythological tropes with a unique love of the weird and incredible. The story, briefly, is this: the parliament of a small village called Erl wants more magic in their lives, and they tell the king of their desire. The king ponders this request, then dispatches his son to wed the daughter of the king of Elfland, which will bring magic and splendor to Erl and satisfy the parliament. The young prince travels to the resident witch, and is given by her a magic sword. So armed, he travels to the shifting and mysterious borders of Elfland, past “the fields we know” (in Dunsany’s language), to seek out the princess.
