As when the sun above a dusky wold,
Springs into sight and turns the gloom to gold,
Lights with his magic beams the dew-deck'd bow'r,
And wakes to life the gay responsive flow'r;
So now o'er realms where dark'ning dulness lies,
In solar state see shining PLUNKETT rise!
Monarch of Fancy! whose ethereal mind
Mounts fairy peaks, and leaves the throng behind;
Whose soul untainted bursts the bounds of space, And leads to regions of supernal grace: Can any praise thee with too strong a tone, Who in this age of folly gleam'd alone? Thy quill, DUNSANY, with an art divine Recalls the gods to each deserted shrine; From mystic air a novel pantheon makes, And with new spirits fills the meads and brakes; With thee we wander thro' primeval bow'rs, For thou hast brought earth's childhood back, and ours! How leaps the soul, with sudden bliss increas'd, When led by thee to lands beyond the East!

A vital figure in modern fantasy and fantastic fiction, he is credited as a major influence on the likes of Tolkien, Le Guin and Lovecraft to name but a few. By Gerald Robinson.
Baron Dunsany was blessed with an understanding of the symbolic strengths of fantasy and he used fantasy, horror and the supernatural world as metaphors for his own deeply-held convictions. Thus, according to experts who have studied this enigmatic writer in detail, the need for human reunification with the natural world was the overriding theme that permeated all his works.
The eccentric 18th Lord Dunsany once ran for public office and was a devoted family man.

BIO Lord Dunsany by Donald Clarke
One of the members asked if we could give a little background on this author who so influenced young Howard P. Lovecraft. Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany, was born on July 24, 1878 at Dunsany Castle, County Meath, Ireland. His uncle was the statesman Sir Horace Plunkett who first proposed the Dominion structure for the creation of the Irish Free State. Dunsany's youth was spent with his mother's ancestral estate, Dunstall Priory, Shoreham, Kent, England. He attended private schools: Cheam School and Eton and completed his education at the military college at Sandhurst. When the Boer War broke out in 1899, Dunsany fought in the Coldstream guards. That same year he acceded to his title of Baron. In 1904 Dunsany married Lady Beatrice Villiers, youngest daughter of the 7th Earl of Jersey, and has one son, the Hon. Randal Plunkett, born in 1906. When World War I broke out, Dunsany was a Captain of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. At a very tall six feet, four inches, he remarked that: "Our trenches were only six feet deep. I shall never fear 'publicity' again." He was wounded April 25, 1916 but survived the war to continue his illustrious career. With Dunsany's death in 1957, his son Randal became the 19th Baron Dunsany.

Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, Lord Dunsany, the 18th Baron Dunsany, lived from 1878 until 1957. He was was born in London, in the house of his grandfather, Admiral Lord Dunsany. Lord Dunsany was a big game hunter, chess-master, Boer War and WW1 veteran, and one of the greatest and most influential fantasy writers of modern times. Authors like J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) and H.P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) (who said: "his rich language, his cosmic point of view, his remote dream-worlds, and his exquisite sense of the fantastic, all appeal to me more than anything else in modern literature") were greatly influenced by his works. Much as the English of the King James Bible molded the translations of numerous ancient religious and epic texts published in English during the 19th century, we owe to Dunsany, along with William Morris (1834-1896), much of the language, structure and sources of modern fantasy. by Lord Dunsany Lord Dunsany's first novel, "Don Rodriguez: Chronicles of Shadow Valley conveys its young disinherited protagonist through a fantasized Spain, gifting him with a Sancho Panza companion, good luck with magicians, and a castle" [The Encyclopedia of Fantasy]. It is a landmark tale for Dunsany, beginning his move from the otherworldly short stories for which his reputation is justly famous to novels, such as the follow-up The King of Elfland's Daughter and The Charwoman's Shadow. L. Sprague de Camp has said: "Dunsany was the second writer ( William Morris in the 1880s being the first) fully to exploit the possibilities of ... adventurous fantasy laid in imaginary lands, with gods, witches, spirits, and magic, like children's fairy tales but on a sophisticated adult level." But more than this, Dunsany was probably the single greatest influence on fantasy writers during the first half of the 20th century.

    INTRODUCTION
    Remembered primarily for his early works, including the short story collections The Gods of Pegāna (1905) and A Dreamer's Tales (1910), Dunsany is considered one of the most significant early twentieth-century contributors to modern fantasy literature. In numerous dramas and works of fiction he examined such subjects as the nature of time and human existence and formulated an individual mythology that influenced such later supernatural fiction writers as H. P. Lovecraft and Fritz Leiber.
    Biographical Information
    Dunsany was born in London and spent his early childhood in Kent. He was educated at Cheam School, Eton College, and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, and served in the Boer War from 1899 to 1902. In 1899 Dunsany succeeded his father to become the eighteenth Baron Dunsany and took up residence in his ancestral home in County Meath, Ireland. There he enjoyed a leisured life characterized by such pursuits as hunting, riding, and playing chess. A prolific author, Dunsany wrote quickly and often completed a story in a single afternoon. At the request of W. B. Yeats, Dunsany wrote his first drama
