The room has no choice. Rooms Flirting Conversation ... Dreams
The room has no choice. it absorbs. And it must put up with the bad flirt, the overly perfumed, with whoever chooses to walk in. is certain to be concealing a sadness, another will have abandoned a dream, at least one will be a special agent for his own cause. And always somberly listing what he does. The room plays no favorites. Like its windows, it does nothing but accommodate shades of light and dark. After everyone leaves (its entrance, of course, is an exit), the room will need to be imagined by someone, perhaps some me walking away now, who comes alive

Stephen Dunn began life after college in 1962 as a pro basketball player with the Williamsport, Pennsylvania Billies. In 1963, he took a job as a copywriter for Nabisco and pursued a career in advertising. It was not until 1970 that Dunn chose to devote himself to poetry, enrolling in the Master of Arts Program in Creative Writing at Syracuse University. "a spokesman for suburban middle class." [His preoccupation with ordinary life] ". . .continues to remind us that there is dignity in the mundane." - Judith Kitchen in The Georgia Review Different Hours (Pulitzer Prize, 2001, Norton) is yet another brilliant examination of everyday experience. "Use what's lying around the house," one poem advises, "Make it simple and sad." He heeds this advice, treating such domestic subjects as marital quarrels, turning 60, the news, the weather, and the New Jersey suburbs. "The Art lies in hiding the art, Horace tells us, and Stephen Dunn has proven himself a master of concealment. His honesty would not be so forceful were it not for his discrete formality; his poems would not be so strikingly naked were they not so carefully dressed."

Steve Dunn died on August 19, 2005 from complications of bacterial meningitis. He was a Stage IV (terminal) kidney cancer patient who had been completely cured 15 years earlier. In 1989, after his doctors said his cancer could not be treated, Steve found a clinical trial through his own research. Later he decided to share what he had learned, primarily through this website and also as an ACOR mailing listowner, speaker, and FDA patient advocate for Kidney Cancer clinical trials. Steve's own story about his cancer (under "Inspirational Patient Stories") tells it better than any of us can. His dedication and determination has helped thousands of patients and caregivers, inspiring many of them to help others. Cancerguide will go on as a lasting tribute to him. It will always be Steve Dunn's Cancerguide. CancerGuide is created by Steve Dunn, a fellow survivor. For more information about this site and about me, see the About CancerGuide Section CancerGuide is different from most sites. It is primarily about helping you learn how to find the answers to your questions and especially to helping you learn what questions you need to ask. I also cover other aspects of coping from attitude to finances. With the big exception of
