- Anyone who has watched TV's Buffy,

understands that the
supernatural can be used as a metaphor
for real life. In Buffy's world the monsters
signify the very real difficulties of growing
up. A boyfriend doesn't simply turn cruel
and stop calling; he literally becomes evil. High school does not simply end but is burnt to the ground forcing students into a new, scary world. Lois Duncan does the same thing in her supernatural novels. Read one of the novels below, and then how Duncan uses the supernatural to portray the real life concerns of teens: Down a Dark Hall Summer of Fear Stranger with my Face The Third Eye Locked in Time A Gift of Magic Your collage should provide images of the real issue in the center and then Duncan's supernatural portrayal surrounding it.

Hotel for Dogs, by Lois Duncan
Liz and Bruce have to go to their Dad's Aunts house until they find a house of their own,Liz and Bruce don't like it at all, especially Liz because she had to leave her dog,Bebe, because their Great Aunt Alice is allergic to dogs. After a few days when they were living there a dog wandered into the house during supper and went up into Aunt Alice's sewing closet, after supper Liz told Bruce about what she saw and they went looking for her. They found her in Aunt Alice's sewing closet with three puppies! They gave them some of the leftover meat loaf from that night.they both decided that the next day Liz will say she had a stomach ache and will stay hom so Aunt Alice wont sew because that's Liz's bedroom, and she will take care of the dogs. Then Bruce will go to school and think of a plan. But then more dogs that need to be fed, groomed, walked, and cared for are stepping into their lives! What will they do!?!?
What I like about the story is that I love dogs and I think I would just keep two of the dogs and not keep them around Aunt Alice then give the other dogs to people in my family who could take care of them or just give them to people who could take care of them. This book is kind of like

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER THREE:
Who Killed My Daughter? hit Albuquerque like a nuclear explosion. One bookstore that had placed an order for 100 copies sold them all within hours and frantically wired the warehouse for another shipment. TV newscasts showed customers scrambling for the last copies on the shelves, and newspaper headlines screamed "Sloppy Police Work Frustrated Duncan" and "Mother Relentlessly Searches For the Awful Truth." "This book is sure to offend some readers," said an article in the Albuquerque Tribune.

""My first book was a young adult novel because I wrote it at age 20, and teenage subject matter was all I knew about," Duncan says. "Today, although I write other types of books as well, I still choose to write primarily for teenagers because I love the sensitivity, vulnerability and responsiveness of that age reader." Duncan is best known for her brilliant psychological suspense novels. She was drawn to this genre because those were the books she enjoyed reading. Of her writing technique, she once said, "Although I've been told that some authors start writing with only a general idea in mind and let their stories evolve on their own, I couldn't work that way. My books are tightly plotted and carefully constructed; every sentence is there for a reason. Personally, I can't imagine writing a book without knowing exactly how it's going to end. It would be like setting out on a cross-country trip without a road map." Her Life and Career "This is an "unofficial" timeline of Lois Duncan's life and career. Note: In some years more than one "event" has happened in Lois Duncan's life/career. This is not in chronological order. It just happened within that year.

So she wrote abook: "Who Killed My Daughter?" One of the things that the Arquette family did was to set up a website, www.iag.net/~barq/kait.html The website is also part of a site known as www.crimescene.com It's a way for people to use all sorts of detection skills on fictional crimes. Don't Look Behind You - Lois Duncan Title: Don't Look Behind You
Author: Lois Duncan
Genre: YA
Rating:

Date read:
August, 2007
Summary: Seventeen-year-old April Corrigan's life ends abruptly when she learns that her airline executive father has been working secretly undercover for the FBI. Now his testimony against a notorious drug dealer has placed the whole family in danger, and April and her family are quickly relocated under the Federal Witness Security Program. What begins as a temporary measure soon must become a way of life. April, an ace tennis player, has to stop playing tennis; her mother must give up a lucrative career as a children's author; their names are changed; and April's naive attempt to communicate with her boyfriend causes the violent death of an agent. The entire book is fast-paced and enthralling, but the conclusion will have readers on the edge of their chairs.
Review: I felt like a quick read, and this one definitely falls into that category. It's one of the few YA's I read as a tween that has stood the test of time, and it still makes me wonder how I would cope with being under the witness protection program and have to give up everything I'd grown to know and love...

INTRO
TODD MATTHEWS: Welcome to Missing Pieces. My name is Todd Matthews. Tonight we have Lois Duncan Arquette. Welcome Lois.
LOIS DUNCAN ARQUETTE: I'm glad to be here with you Todd.
TODD: Oh, I'm very happy. I've been looking forward to this for quite a while now; we've emailed and talked for quite a while. You're a well-known author, obviously, and we're going to talk a little bit about that, but you're also the mother of murdered Kaitlyn Arquette, she was murdered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, July 16, 1989. Police dubbed the shooting as a 'random drive-by' and refused to investigate any other possibility. Is all of that accurate? LOIS: All of that is absolutely accurate, and after the shooting, we began to discover all kinds of things that pointed to an assassination, and the police simply didn't want to look at anything other than random shooting and, of course you can imagine, on top of the grief, the great frustration we felt as we were...these people that were supposed to be helping us and solving this and being our friends...
