INTERVIEW
Lois Duncan is a mastermind of suspense with an imagination as bottomless as a 24-ounce Big Gulp. Her fans adore her, and new fans are constantly popping up. Last year, when her book, I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER, was made into a movie, Lois Duncan fans all over resurrected old copies of classic Duncan novels and new fans ran out to buy them. Who can forget STRANGER WITH MY FACE about the girl whose evil twin haunts her, or GALLOWS HILL, the one about a modern day witch who has to fight for her life the latter was actually made into a TV movie.
Here is an interview with Lois Duncan which was done by Nathalie op de Beeck. Read on to find out about the woman behind the mystery.

There are so many questions to ask you; why don't we begin with your banned books? You knew that "Killing Mr. Griffin" had been banned or censored, but were surprised that "Don't Look Behind You" also was, and "[couldn't] think of a single thing that anyone might object to about that book." If I told you it was challenged for its immorality, as well as for its graphic and sexual references, would you consider these valid reasons for challenging the novel? I can only assume there was a mix-up. "Don't Look Behind You" is about a family forced into the Federal Witness Protection program because the father helped the FBI expose a drug ring. It's an adventure story. The closest we get to a sex scene is when the 17-year-old daughter goes to a party where the punch has been spiked, and her date starts kissing her. She shoves him away and makes him take her home.

Critical Essay by Jan M. Goodman
549 words, approx. 2 pages Daughters of Eve is a suspenseful novel that invalidates legitimate problems by presenting misdirected solutions. The author raises such feminist issues as wife-beating, inequality on the job, unfairness in high school athletics and the sexist dimension of male/female relationships, but the violence of her solutions implies that it may be dangerous to even recognize the issues. Daughters of Eve is an elite high school group; its ten members are dedicated to sisterhood and sworn to secrecy. The book chronicl...

    Happy 62nd Birthday Lois Duncan
I just got my hands on the Newbery and Caldecott Trivia . Can you tell? In the case of Ms. Duncan it says: Lois Duncan once registered for a class in children's literature under her real name, Lois Arquette. The teacher, not realizing the identity of her student, assigned a Lois Duncan book for the class to analyze. Arquette received an "A".
Well one should hope so. Today you may celebrate Ms. Duncan's birth by walking down scary hallways, killing your teachers, and engaging in various sundry activities. I once handed a twelve-year-old, Down A Dark Hall because she wanted something creepy. She took one look at the cover and asked, "Is this for kids?". *sigh* posted by fusenumber8 @ 9:15 AM 0 Comments Links to this post

    Welcome!
As I write this message, fall is in the air. For me, it’s been an exciting summer. Dreamworks has optioned HOTEL FOR DOGS, a humorous book for elementary age children that I wrote over thirty years ago, and Emma Roberts, the young actress who played “Nancy Drew,” has been cast in the lead. I’ve learned the hard way that in Hollywood nothing is “for certain” – projects sometimes fall through for no apparent reason – but I have good feelings about this one. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
However, you don’t want to focus on funny stories right now. This is a time of year when you want to be scared! So, here are suggestions for some books that are as spooky as Halloween itself:
LOCKED IN TIME Nore’s new stepmother, stepbrother and stepsister have a shocking secret and they’re willing to do anything to protect it. Even commit murder.
GALLOWS HILL Sarah, who is posing as a fortune-teller for a Halloween carnival, begins to see actual visions that can predict the future. (This story has a surprising link to the Salem witch trials.)
STRANGER WITH MY FACE Have you ever been haunted by the feeling that someone is spying on you, lurking around your house and yard, even entering your bedroom? Are your friends plotting against you when they say they've seen you do things you know you haven't done? What's going on and does Laurie really want to find out?

(Lois Duncan Steinmetz) (Mother of Brett Arquette aka Lois Kerry Search Authors Search Books About Lois Duncan Lois Duncan grew up in Sarasota, Florida and from early childhood she knew she wanted to be a writer. She submitted her first story to a magazine at the age of 10 and made her first sale at 13. Throughout her high-school years, she wrote regularly for young people's publications, particularly Seventeen Magazine. Duncan is best known for her brilliant psychological suspense novels. She was drawn to this genre because those were the books he enjoyed reading. Of her writing technique, she once said, "Although I've been told that some authors start writing with only a general idea in mind and let their stories evolve on their own, I couldn't work that way. My books are tightly plotted and carefully constructed; every sentence is there for a reason. Personally, I can't imagine writing a book without knowing exactly how it's going to end. It would be like setting out on a cross-country trip without a road map."

Happy Holidays . I want to wish everyone Happy Holidays. Yes, I'm alive and still here. Recently, (on and off), I've been updating the site with updated information. The most important updates are the book covers that have been published this year from Random House. The black noir covers (used from when I Know What You Did Last Summer movie came out) have a new home in the book cover gallery . Thanks to online bookstores and such, I have the new covers you see in stores (US wise). However, some of them elude me: the new covers for I Know What You Did Last Summer Killing Mr. Griffin
