Alexandre Dumas rides again – 137 years later
Yet another swashbuckler joins 'The Three Musketeers' and 'The Count of Monte Cristo.'
By Erik Spanberg from the September 18, 2007 edition E-mail Print Letter to the Editor Republish ... digg Page 1 of 2 Alexandre Dumas died 137 years ago, but he still has a new novel to offer readers this fall. Indeed, the story of The Last Cavalier could serve as an example of the characteristic twist of fate found in Dumas swashbucklers such as "The Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers." Eminent Dumas scholar Claude Schopp discovered the vestiges of the manuscript while researching the novelist's life during the late-1980s at the National Library in Paris. Schopp stumbled upon it while making a request for a long-forgotten scrap of information on Dumas. Instead he found a letter written by Dumas in response to a critique of a story set in the Napoleonic era. A little more probing led Schopp to "The Last Cavalier," a typically epic Dumas offering that runs 118 chapters – and still reaches no conclusions. Dumas wrote the novel at the end of his life. It ran in serial form between January and October 1869. Dumas died in 1870.

THE GLOBAL AFRICAN COMMUNITY H I S T O R Y N O T E S AEXANDRE DUMAS INTERRED AT PANTHEON Posted by RUNOKO RASHIDI Paris, AFP A lexandre Dumas, the 19th century author of hosts of swashbuckling yarns including the Three Musketeers, will be granted the supreme national homage tomorrow when his remains are interred alongside other French heroes at the Pantheon in Paris. The body of the writer, who was born exactly 200 years ago, was exhumed earlier this week as his home of Viller-Cotterets, and it is being transferred in pomp to the Senate on the eve of tomorrow's service. President Jacques Chirac is to preside over the ceremony during which Dumas will be carried into the national mausoleum with the escort of four musketeers. The velvet drape over the coffin will be inscribed with the Musketeer's motto: "All for one and one for all." Actors lining the street will read passages from his works, and the public are being urged to carry one of his books. The grandson of a Haitian slave, Dumas produced more than 250 works including plays, novels, political tracts and one cookbook. Despite his popularity he was until recently disdained by the literary establishment, and his elevation is a sign of changing values.

Dumas, Alexandre Biography
One of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, roman feuilleton , the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales. They are not faithful to the historical facts, but blend skillfully history and fiction. Diable! ' he said, after having swallowed the divine preserve. 'I do not know it the result will be as agreeable as you describe, but the thing does not appear to me as palatable as you say.'
(from The Count of Monte Cristo Histoire de France and Pierre de L'Estoile's Memoires-journaux "All for one, one for all, that is our device." (from The Three Musketeers Before 1843 Dumas wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought Dumas enormous fortune, but he could spent money faster than he made it. He produced some 250 books with his 73 assistants, especially with the history teacher Auguste Maquet, whom he wisely allowed to work quite independently. Dumas earned roughly 200,000 francs yearly and received an annual sum of 63,000 francs for 220,000 lines from the newspapers La Presse and the Constitutionel . Maquet often proposed subjects and wrote first drafts for some of Dumas' most famous serial novels, including LES TROIS MOUSQUETAIRES (1844
