This document was originally published in Minute History of the Drama
A LEXANDER DUMAS, the Younger, ranks as one of the three leading French dramatists of the last quarter of the 19th century. Although the theme of illicit love has always played an important part on the French stage, Dumas' obsession with the subject amounted almost to a mania. Eleven plays written before 1880 all have illicit love as the motif. Yet Dumas liked to regard himself as a moralist and teacher, a position that seems somewhat contradictory. Perhaps a psychiatrist would find in the fact that he, like his father, was an illegitimate child, an explanation of his harping so constantly on the single theme. The torment of his school days when he was constantly taunted with his illegitimacy succeeded to a Bohemian comradeship with the father, who had publicly acknowledged his son as soon as his own literary reputation was sufficiently established to bring in a dependable income. This life eventually landed Dumas, fils, in debt to the tune of 50,000 francs. Finally, when only his pen stood between himself and disgrace, he brought forth in 1948 the famous Lady of the Camellias (or Camille ), first as a novel, then in a dramatic version. This drama, however, had to wait three years before it was finally produced in 1852. It took for its subject the sorrows of "the professional light sister," a type of play of which

Dumas' adventure novels explore man's relationship with god and with each other. His life was as exciting as that of many of his characters - he had ties to the French resistance movement, had many mistresses and was forced out of France by his creditors as a result of his excessive spending.

One of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both written within the space of two years, 1844-45, and which belong to the foundation works of popular culture. He was among the first, along with Honoré de Balzac and Eugène Sue, who fully used the possibilities of roman feuilleton, the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales. Th... • Just as perfect as the work of this great novelist are the Alexandre Dumas Writers Edition pens. Created from the finest of materials, they have a mysterious shimmering appearance which is set off by a dark brown precious resin cap. On top of this, every detail emphasises the personality of Alexandre Dumas: the clip with its distinctive sword symbol, the rhodium-plated 18-karat gold nib, which is decorated by a fine engraving of a fleur-de-lis, and the gold-coloured signature on the cap. Next Incidentally, the first specimens of the Writers Edition Alexandre Dumas that were made erroneously carried the signature of his father – a mistake that has made this version a rare collectors’ item. Back Collector's Information Alexandre Dumas was one of the most important novelists and playwrights of the 19th century. He knew better than anyone how to combine effective dialogue, dramatic tension and lucid description in gripping stories. His intellectually stimulating and ambitious works still captivate a large readership all over the world – Dumas wrote nearly 300 novels, including such world-renowned classics as “The Three Musketeers” and “The Count of Monte Cristo”. Writer
Alexandre Dumas wrote the classic adventure novel The Three Musketeers and some of the most famous and popular stories in French literature. Beginning in 1844 he had a string of brilliantly successful books, publishing The Three Musketeers (1844, first printed in serial form) and following it with The Count of Monte Cristo Twenty Years After (1845) and The Black Tulip (1850), among many others. A great celebrity writer of the day, he was almost as famous for his reckless spending and lavish lifestyle, and he was frequently in debt. In his last days he was supported by his illegitimate son, the author Alexandre Dumas the Younger. Extra credit : Dumas and his son are often referred to as Dumas (father) and Dumas fils (son)... Alexandre Dumas was one-quarter black; his grandfather had married a slave while serving as a government official in what is now Haiti. Other adventure novelists of the 1800s include Sir Walter Scott (of Ivanhoe fame) and H. Rider Haggard

    Heart

Antiquity is the aristocracy of history.
    Antiquity
Art needs solitude or misery or passion. Lukewarm zephyrs wilt it. It is a rock-flower flourishing by stormy blasts in stony soil. Art Only a woman will believe in a man who has once been detected in fraud and falsehood. Forgiveness Pure love and suspicion cannot dwell together: at the door where the latter enters, the former makes its exit. Love Sell your confidence at a high price, if at all; to be strong, keep your own counsel. Secrecy The custom and fashion of to-day will be the awkwardness and outrage of to-morrow. So arbitrary are these transient laws. Custom The proper way to check slander is to despise it; attempt to overtake and refute it, and it will outrun you. Slander The wisdom of women comes to them by inspiration, their folly by meditation.
