let's buckle some swash Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? We all know Dumas as the author of the Three Musketeers saga and the Count of Monte Cristo ; in addition to these he wrote hundreds of other novels, only a few of which are available in English. We think of them as classics, but to the audience of the day they were the most popular historical novels going. The major problem in finding Dumas' novels in English is finding good unabridged editions. Most English editions of Dumas' work that are currently available are abridged; these should be avoided, in my opinion. The abridgement of The Man in the Iron Mask is usually particularly bad. It is only the final part of a much larger work , and usually gets gutted of the material relating back to the earlier parts. As a result you enter the tale in the middle, with no explanation of why the characters are currently doing what they are doing. I found it most unpleasant on my first try, and in fact never finished reading that version of the tale. However, there is happy news. Dumas' best known books, including all of the books in the

Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas is one of the greatest writers of his time. Alexandre Dumas was born on July 24, 1802, in Villers-Cotterªts, France. Few people know that Alexandre was a grandson of a Haitian slave who was also the illegitimate son of Marie Louise-Elizabeth Labouret and Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, a general in Napoleon's army. His father died when Alexandre was four, in 1806, leaving the family in financial trouble. Although he did not have much money and had limited schooling, Alexandre had a happy childhood. In 1818, Alexandre's mother informed him that they had no money and that he had to find a job. Alexandre accepted a clerking position for the Duke of Orl©ans in Paris, where he worked as a clerk. After he met a famous French actor, Talma, and decided to become a play writer. Alexandre wrote his first play, Napol©on Bonapart, in 1825. His most popular novels are the musketeers trilogy, which includes The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Man in the Iron Mask. Another well-known novels were The Count of Monte Cristo, Ten Years Late, and The Black Tulip. Alexandre fathered two illegitimate children of two different mothers. His son, Alexandre Dumas Junior was born on July 27, 1824 and his daughter, Marie Dumas, was born on March 5, 1831. On February 1, 1840, Alexandre married a woman whom he divorced six years later. By 1843 Alexandre wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought him an enormous fortune, but he spent money faster than he earned it. Even though Alexandre earned about 200,000 francs yearly and received an annual sum of 63,000 francs from the newspapers La Presse and the Constitutionel, he was usually in financial trouble

Alexandre Dumas
Alexandre Dumas, pere, born Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie (July 24, 1802- December 5, 1870), is best known for his numerous historical novels of high adventure which have made him the most widely read French author in the world. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo and the D'Artagnan Romances, were serialized, and he also wrote plays, magazine articles, and was a prolific correspondent. His paternal grandmother was a black slave. While his grandfather, Marquis Antoine-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie, served the government of France as General commissaire in the Artillery in the colony of Saint Domingue (now Haiti), he married Marie-Cesette Dumas, a black slave. In 1762, she gave birth to his father, Thomas-Alexandre, and died soon thereafter. When the Marquis and his young mulatto son returned to Normandy, slavery still existed, and the boy suffered as a result of being half black. In 1786, Thomas-Alexandre joined the French army, but to protect the aristocratic family's reputation, he enlisted using his mother's maiden name. Following the French Revolution, the Marquis lost his estates, but Thomas-Alexandre Dumas distinguished himself as a capable and daring soldier in the revolutionary army, rising through the ranks to become a General by the age of 31.

Email Us ALEXANDRE DUMAS THE YOUNGER (1824-1895) A T the beginning of the last quarter of the nineteenth century three men, Augier , Dumas the younger, and Victorien Sardou were considered the leaders of dramatic activity in France. The influence of Strindberg and Ibsen , never at any time so powerful in France as elsewhere in Europe, had not yet even begun to make itself felt. Alexandre Dumas, son of the exuberant creator of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers , was the author of a dozen or more important plays which had appeared between 1850 and 1875. , a dramatization of a novel by the young Dumas, had to wait three years for a stage performance, which was finally obtained in 1852. Its immediate success, not only in France but in other parts of Europe and in America, was one more indication that the theater-going public was eager to sentimentalize over the sorrows of the professional light sister. Hugo 's Marion Delorme had been one of the earliest presentations of this class, as Nana, Zaza, Marguerite Gautier and others were among the later types.

Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers Introduction
"I pardon you, monseigneur!" said Bonacieux, hesitating to take the purse, fearing, doubtless, that this pretended gift was only a joke. "But you are free to have me arrested, you are free to have me tortured, you are free to have me hung. You are the master, and I should not have the least word to say about it." ( The Three Musketeers Alexandre Dumas the elder, known as "Dumas père" (his writer son had the same Christian name), was born in the town of Villers-Cotterets, near Soissons. He was the grandson of the marquis Antoine-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie and Marie Dumas. Dumas's father, Thomas-Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie was a fighter in the French revolutionary armies and rose to the rank of general. He fell on hard times, however, and died in poverty in 1806. Alexandre himself gained a somewhat slight education but managed to forge a career nonetheless due to his reputedly beautiful handwriting, initially in the service and of the Duc d'Orléans. Before this he had briefly worked as a solicitor clerk. In the household of the duke, Dumas read widely and rapaciously. Authors favoured by the young Dumas and whose influence upon his writing is clear were

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
As a playwright Dumas made his breakthrough with HENRI III ET SA COUR (1829), produced by the Comedie Francaise. It gained a huge success and Dumas went on to write additional plays, of which LA TOUR DE NESLE (1832, The Tower of Nesle) is considered the greatest masterpiece of French melodrama. He wrote constantly, producing a steady stream of plays, novels, and short stories.
Dumas' role in the development of the historical novel owes much to a coincidence. The lifting of press censorship in the 1830s gave rise to a rapid spread of newspapers. Editors began to lure readers by entertaining serial novels. Everybody read them, the aristocracy, and the bourgeoisie, young and old, men and women. Dumas' first true serial novel was LE CAPITAINE PAUL (1838, Captain Paul), a quick rewrite of a play.

      Waiting on Alexandre Dumas
      By William Davis
26 June 2006 I found Jan holding the phone and wearing a hopeless expression that made me want to bite her. "You speak French, right?" she asked. Oui ," I said, and tried to look unencouraging. "I think he's speaking French to me," said Jan. "But I don't really know. Do you think you could try talking to him?" Bien sur ," I said, and took the phone from her. "Good day, sir? Yes, I understand French a little." Apparently enough to communicate. "Yes, sir. I believe that to be excellent fortune for the two of us." The voice on the other end projected so well that I was holding the phone a foot away from my ear. "Yes, sir. Two people at seven o'clock this evening. Your pardon? Ah, a table dark and suitable for conversation. That is not difficult. Rosie's? The restaurant, sir, has the name of its founder. Yes, sir, she has died. Yes, sir, we have excellent wine. Yes, sir, several are French. Excellent. Until seven this evening, then, sir." I hung up the phone, took Jan's pencil from her, and marked the reservation in the book. "You shouldn't take reservations without asking me," said Jan. "What did he want?" I pointed to the book. "A table for two at seven? That's the busiest time of night."

Alexandre Dumas p¨re is particular difficult because many dozens of titles are loosely connected series that invites odd breaks. Particularly troublesome is the Vicomte de Bragellone which is not only the third of the Musketeer trilogy, but itself is often divided into it's own trilogy.
