RICHARD MATTHEWS DUKE RICHARD MATTHEWS DUKE - RICHARD M. DUKE was among the Kentuckians who emigrated from their native state to Indiana in an early day, and finding farming conditions better in the latter spent the major part of their lives there. He was born near Covington, February 13, 1837, and died at Bloomfield, Indiana, June 20, 1898. He was the son of JOHN and MARY (MATTHEWS) DUKE, the former of Tenneesee and the latter of Kentucky. They came to Greene county in 1855 and settled near Owensburg, where they undertook to gain a livelihood from a eighty-acre tract of wild land, succeeding so well that they lived there the reminder of their lives, rearing eight children. Those living are: JOHN, at Linton, Indiana; WILLIAM also lives there; SARAH HUDSON lives at Lyons, Indiana, LEWIS in Jefferson township, Greene county. RICHARD DUKE had only a meager education. He spent his boyhood at the old home. He enlisted in the Ninety-seventh Regiment, Company E. Indiana Volunteer Infantry at Jonesboro, Indiana and served three years. Having contracted hear trouble while in the army he was unfit for duty at the front and spent the remainder of the time as a nurse. After the war he lived in Jackson township for two years. Then he moved to Pair Play township, but came back to Jackson township and spent seven years there. In 1880 he came to Richland township and bought eighty acres of land, which was only partly cleared. He soon erected several buildings and mad3e general improvements on the place, which he continued to improve until his death. He was a Republican, a member of the Christian Church and the Grand Army of the Republic.

    http://www.the-orb.net/orb_done/dudo/52-axis
Thus the most distinguished duke and count Richard, ensnared by the allurements and threats of these lying embassies, has set out, with a gathered military band, to meet king Lothar at a conference. But the king, having gathered together in the deceit all of Richard's enemies, namely Tetbold of Chartres, Geoffrey of Anjou (note 1) and count Baldwin of Flanders, (note 2) having indeed secretly amassed an entire army of Richard's enemies, would linger, in a fraudulent spirit, by the river Eaulne. (note 3) Truly, on the day of the enjoined conference, the day established (deceitfully) for the two to become allies, great duke Richard has sent scouts to report to him concerning any transactions in the king's camp, and to inquire who was with the king and whether any deception was concealed in the conference that was about to be held.
However, having travelled thither, the scouts have discovered Tetbold and duke Richard's (note 4) other foes before the king. They have been, moreover, brought to a standstill, greatly astounded indeed at the king's messages. Furthermore, while they still lingered with the king in view, behold the cuirassed and helmeted armies of counts Tetbold, Geoffrey and Baldwin have come surging to that very spot, riding swiftly, desiring to be ordered to attack Richard (note 5) and his followers as a hostile assembly. Each one, however, seeing this, would signal to himself the need to report swiftly to count Richard what they have seen. Then one of them, mounted on a nimble horse, has sought out the most worthy count Richard with a fleet course, leaping over the entire host and crying out with a great groan and saying: "Lord, mightiest lord duke, rescue yourself, lest you be undone by enemy heinousness, for all your foes, assembled with the king, are longing either to capture or to slay you and your followers!"

Richard The Fearless, French Richard Sans Peurduke of Normandy (942–996), son of William I Longsword.
Louis IV of France took the boy-duke into his protective custody, apparently intent upon reuniting Normandy to the crown's domains; but in 945 Louis was captured by the Normans, and Richard was returned to his people. Richard withstood further Carolingian attempts to subdue his duchy and, in 987, was instrumental in securing the French crown for his brother-in-law, the Robertian Hugh Capet.
Richard married Gunnora of Denmark [19066] [MRIN: 6388], daughter of King of Denmark Harald Bluetooth [19067] and Gunhilda of Sweden [19068]. (Gunnora of Denmark [19066] died in 1031.)

    Graduate Fellowships
First year graduate fellowships such as the Pratt-Gardner program are particularly important for graduate students because the financial support enables these students to spend their first year exploring the research opportunities at Pratt and then choose a faculty advisor.
    Pratt-Gardner Fellowship Program
The Pratt-Gardner Fellows is a first-year engineering graduate student scholarship program established by the Gardner Family, in honor of Duke civil engineering alumnus William H. Gardner, Jr., of the class of 1945. This fellowship program encourages active graduate student participation in developing a scholarly community that promotes interdisciplinary exchange. Six students are supported each year. Fellows are nominated and selected by a faculty committee. Members of the the W. H. Gardner, Jr. Society of Engineering Fellows are asked to take an active role throughout their Duke career in coordinating and facilitating graduate student-led activities in the Pratt School, including intellectual interchange through seminars series, workshops and social activities within the Pratt graduate student body.
