edit Birth
He was born to William I of Normandy , ruler of Normandy, and his wife, Sprota . He was still a boy when his father died in 942. His mother was a Breton concubine captured in war and bound to William by a Danish marriage. After William died, Sprota became the wife of Esperleng, a wealthy miller.
edit Life
Richard was still a boy when his father died, and so he was powerless to stop Louis IV of France when he seized Normandy. Louis kept him in confinement in his youth at L¢on, but he escaped with the assistance of Osmund de Centeville Bernard de Senlis (who had been a companion of Rollo of Normandy Ivo de Bell¨sme , and Bernard the Dane (ancestor of families of Harcourt and Beaumont). In 968, Richard agreed to "commend" himself to Hugh, Count of Paris. He then allied himself with the Norman and Viking leaders, drove Louis out of Rouen, and took back Normandy by 947. He later quarrelled with

INTRODUCTION
Charles III King of the West Franks granted land around Rouen to Viking raiders in [911], the territory evolving over the following century into the duchy of Normandy.  The Viking leader Rollo accepted baptism with the name Robert.  His alleged Norse ancestry is recorded only in the early 13th century sagas written by Snorri Sturluson, and it is not known how factually accurate this might be.  Guillaume de Jumièges describes the exploits of Rollo's father in Denmark without naming him, and also names Rollo's younger brother as "Gurim" who is unknown to the sagas .  The Viking rulers of the future duchy of Normandy used the title count at least until the early 11th century.  The title "Duke of Normandy" is first recorded in [1015], although its adoption in place of count must have been a gradual process as Duke Richard II is called " comes " in necrology entries which record his death in 1026.  His sons and successors, Dukes Richard III and Robert II, are consistently recorded with the ducal title in primary sources.

Saint Olav - King of Norway
III. As a guest of duke Richard II in Normandy
Olav sailed northwards and came to Rouen, where he spent the winter as a guest of duke Richard II of Normandy (1013-1014). Here in Rouen, Olav must have pondered the powerlessness of the gods and the omnipotence of the White Christ - for his Christian friends could tell him that the White Christ was uncreated. He existed from all eternity. Nor would he perish in Ragnarokk. The heavenly king would live forever in heavenly glory. He was also told that the White Christ had created a court of angels, and that all human beings had come into existence through his word.

Many thanks for this interesting item - coincidentally I had been
looking just the other day at the entry for Walter de St Valery ("de Sancto Walarico") in Domesday People (pp 453-454), which calls him "son of Bernard, advocate of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme... a descendant of Richard III of Normandy, according to Orderic Vitalis, who gave Bernard's parents as Gilbert advocate of Saint-Valery and a daughter [sic, unnamed in DP] of Richard III and Papia 'de Envermeu'." Hence this descent likely features in the ancestries of those many listers who can trace back to Maud de St Valery and William de Braose. Given Richard III's birthdate (c1000), it is possible that he could have had a great-grandson (Walter) as a tenant-in-chief in 1086; however, if as you state Walter's brother had an adult son-in-law in

Fru Astrida sighed and shook her head, and feared the poor child
would never grow up to be anything on this earth. Great as had been
the difference at first between him and Richard, it was now far
greater. Richard was an unusually strong boy for ten years old,
upright and broad-chested, and growing very fast; while Carloman
seemed to dwindle, stooped forward from weakness, had thin pinched
features, and sallow cheeks, looking like a plant kept in the dark. The old Baron said that hardy, healthy habits would restore the puny children; and Lothaire improved in health, and therewith in temper; but his little brother had not strength enough to bear the seasoning. He pined and drooped more each day; and as the autumn came on, and the wind was chilly, he grew worse, and was scarcely ever off the lap of the kind Lady Astrida. It was not a settled sickness, but he grew weaker, and wasted away. They made up a little couch for him by the
