    Valentine
    Carol Ann Duffy
Not a red rose or a satin heart. I give you an onion. It is a moon wrapped in brown paper. It promises light like the careful undressing of love. Here. It will blind you with tears like a lover. It will make your reflection a wobbling photo of grief. I am trying to be truthful. Not a cute card or a kissogram. I give you an onion. Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips, possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are. Take it. Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring, if you like. Lethal. Its scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife. Submitted by yingz Added: Last Read: Viewed: 19519 times

carol ann duffy wins t.s. eliot prize
Carol Ann Duffy has won the T.S. Eliot prize for poetry for her latest collection of romantic verse.  Rapture is a series of love poems that covers all aspects of relationships including falling in love, arguments, adultery and breaking up.  Duffy beat Polly Clark, David Harsnet and Sinead Morrisey to the £10,000 prize which was presented by T.S. Eliot’s widow at a London ceremony. Duffy is from Glasgow and her previous poetry collection includes Mean Time which earned her the Whitbread Poetry Award in 1993. She is also an acclaimed playwright, penning works such as Take my Husband, Loss and Little Women and Big Boys. David Constantine, T.S. Eliot Prize chair of judges, said, “In the language and circumstances of our day and age it re-animates and continues a long tradition of the poetry of love and loss.” On hearing of her win, Duffy paid tribute to T.S. Eliot who was a great inspiration in her youth. She said

Stealing - Carol Ann Duffy - Study Notes. for the text of all Duffy's poems click here Starts with a question in line 1 - interacts with audience - challenges and gains interest "Midnight" - image of darkness, night - links to perceptions of thieves and night-time. "mute" - silence and unanswering, personification of object that is the snowman. No interaction with this except on physical level (identifies narrator's social difficulties?) "mate" - friend/sexual partner/soulmate? - narrator able to identify with the inanimate snowman. Their minds are compares in simile form as both being cold like ice - cold mind, reserved, indifferent, uncaring of people's reactions to his/her actions. "Better off dead" - identifies own moral structure, that taking what you want to take is acceptable - outside mores of society. This is character's way of life, stealing for the thrill, to feel alive. Lines 7-9 - Difficulty of stealing and moving the snowman illustrates and enhances the feeling of futility in the narrator's actions. Huge effort to steal something that has no monetary worth. The snowman's only value lies within the feelings that it invokes in both the thief and the victims. "fierce chill"

She graduated in philosophy from the University of Liverpool in 1977, and now lives in Manchester, where she works as a freelance writer. Her Selected Poems (1994) contains work chosen from her previous volumes, Standing Female Nude Selling Manhattan The Other Country (1990), and Mean Time (1993; winner of the Whitbread Poetry Award and Forward Poetry Prize The World's Wife , a witty collection of poems about women usually excluded from history, was published in 1999 Characterized by social critique channelled through dramatic monologue, her poems provide voices for an extraordinary number of contemporary characters, including a fairground psychopath, a literary biographer, a newborn baby, disinherited American Indians, and even a ventriloquist's dummy. Many of the poems reflect on time, change, and loss. In dramatizing scenes of childhood, adolescence, and adult life, whether personal or public, contemporary or historical, she discovers moments of consolation through love, memory, and language. She explores not only everyday experience, but also the rich fantasy life of herself and others. This latter interest may have prompted her stage adaptation of the tales of the Brothers

  • Introduction
Memories play a significant role in the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, particularly her recollections of childhood places and events. The poem "Originally," published in The Other Country (1990), draws specifically from memories of Duffy's family's move from Scotland to England when she and her siblings were very young. The first-born child, Duffy was just old enough to feel a deep sense of personal loss and fear as she traveled farther and farther away from the only place she had known as "home" and the family neared its alien destination. This sentiment is captured in "Originally," in which it is described in the rich detail and defining language of both the child who has had the experience and the adult who recalls it. As the title suggests, a major concern of the poem is beginnings—one's roots, birthplace, and homeland. Stanzas 1 and 2 center on the pain of giving up, or being forced to give up, the comfort of a familiar environment and of feeling odd and out of place in a new one. In stanza 3, the final stanza, Duffy does an about-face, describing what it feels like to accept fate, to resign oneself to change and move on. The last line of the poem, however, presents an intriguing conundrum: Has the speaker really learned to forgo originality, or has she not?
