Scottish poet. Her poems deal passionately with loss, betrayal, and love, and she brings to life domestic scenes from childhood and adolescence. She has won several awards, including first prize in the 1983 National Poetry Competition, the Scottish Arts Council Awards of Merit, for her first collection of poems, Standing Female Nude (1985), and her third collection, The Other Country (1990). In 1993 she received the Forward Poetry Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award for her highly praised fourth collection of poems, Mean Time . She was awarded an OBE in 1995. She was born in Glasgow, and has lived in England in Staffordshire, Liverpool (where she attended university), and London. Duffy's poetry is charming and realistic and enables readers to see things in new ways. She juggles the language to achieve surprising and interesting results, and her poems have a rhythm which stirs up memories. As well as writing her own poetry, she has edited two collections of poems for children, I Wouldn't Thank You for a Valentine (1992) and Stopping for Death hut(1)

Carol Ann Duffy: Valentine Not a red rose or a satin heart. I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love. Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief. I am trying to be truthful. Not a cute card or kissogram. I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful as we are, for as long as we are. Take it. Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring, if you like. Lethal. Its scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife. Comments

Thursday Short Poem: Duffy's "Crush"
Scottish poet Carol Ann Duffy won the T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize (one of the most prestigious in the UK) last month. I've read a fair amount of her stuff recently, and this is my current favorite. The last stanza is devastatingly good, of course, but the build-up is excellent as well. Crush The older she gets,
the more she awakes
with somebody's face strewn in her head
like petals which once made a flower. What everyone does
is sit by a desk
and stare at the view, till the time
where they live reappears. Mostly in words. Imagine a girl
turning to see
love stand by a window, taller,
clever, anointed with sudden light.

The Other Country by Duffy, Carol Ann
Carol Ann Duffy's third collection takes us to `the other country' - the places that we visit in fantasy, memory and imagination. `What is admirable about Duffy', commented Robert Nye in `The Times', `is that she celebrates such places without sentimentalizing them, and wrings the
last drop of meaning from each visit.'
Carol Ann Duffy was born in Glasgow in 1955. Her awards include first prize in the 1983 National Poetry Competition; three Scottish Arts Council Book Awards; Eric Gregory, Somerset Maugham and Dylan Thomas Awards in Britain and a 1995 Lannan Literary Award in the USA. In 1993 she received the Forward Poetry Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award for her acclaimed fourth collection `Mean Time'. The anthologies she has edited include `Anvil New Poets 2' and two for teenagers, `I Wouldn't Thank You for a Valentine' and `Stopping for Death'. Her `Selected Poems' is published by Penguin; her most recent collections `The World's Wife' and `Feminine Gospels' are published by Picador.

    • UK Christina Patterson Saturday, 2 October 1999 Carol Ann Duffy has had a difficult fortnight. Her partner, the poet and novelist Jackie Kay, has been in hospital after suffering a severe allergic reaction to a midge bite. Jackie's son Matthew has started secondary school; her own daughter, Ella, has begun primary school and, to cap it all, she has been trying with limited success to house-train the latest addition to their home: Dinks the dog. "All of this would have been a lot easier without the dog," she declares grimly. Such images of bustling domesticity are not what one associates with a poet famed for fierce feminism and uncompromising social satire. The World's Wife will, however, please those who like such labels, as well as just about everybody who picks it up. It's a playful and extremely funny look at history, myths and legends through the eyes of the invisible wives. Mrs Faust recounts the meteoric rise of a husband who "didn't have a soul to sell". Mrs Midas has to install her husband in a caravan "in the wilds" in order to avoid the deadly effects of his magical touch. Pilate's Wife swaps a thrilling glance with the rugged, sexy Christ before her husband washes his "useless, perfumed" hands. Mrs Aesop gives her boring, pompous husband a little tale of her own: one that involves an axe and a cock. "I laughed last, longest," she announces triumphantly.
