Transforming the Insider-Outsider Perspective: Postcolonial Fiction from the Pacific
Sandra Tawake
Abstract: Keywords: Alan Duff, contemporary Pacific fiction, Sia Figiel, Witi Ihimaera, Maori writers, postcolonial writing, Samoan writers, John Pule
Until 1970, most of the fiction about the Pacific and Pacific Islanders was written by people living outside the Pacific. It was written from a Eurocentric perspective that depicted Pacific Islanders as exotic, peripheral, "noble," heroic, primitive. That fiction tended to marginalize Pacific Island peoples and to present them in the roles of spectators and objects of European desires. Samoans, Tahitians, Maori, and Hawaiians depicted in the works of such writers as W Somerset Maugham, James Michener, Herman Melville, and Pierre Loti represent secondary, minor characters in what are now described as colonial narratives of the islands. Although some of the writers' Pacific characters reveal attempts to create a more active, complex indigenous presence, most central roles were reserved for boat captains, naval officers, colonial officials, missionaries, and the like. Paul Sharrad, in his Readings in Pacific Literature (1993), claimed that this early writing about the Pacific was deemed subliterary for being too involved with "artless yarning," travelogues, and popular or children's romances. However, Sharrad (1993,1) named several works that are usually identified as marking the beginning of an "authentic"

Overcoming the Fear of Using Drama in English Language Teaching
Judith Gray Royka
Jnjroyka [at] hotmail.com
Andong National University Language Center (Korea) Just a few drama activities can bring an EFL/ESL classroom to life. The trends in English Language Teaching (ELT) lean heavily toward communicative and authentic language use. Drama provides lots of immediate resources and is fun for teacher and students alike. The fear factor for a new drama user is the hard part to overcome. At times teachers are reluctant to use 'drama' activities in classrooms for various reasons: they don't know how to use the activities, limited resources, time constraints, a fear of looking and feeling foolish and the list goes on. Generally these feelings are more prevalent when attempting to use drama with adults. Teachers of young children tend to use more play, games and drama type activities since the children are closer to the "play and explore" stage of development. Often children are much more receptive to any kind of "make-believe" or drama type activity. Of course this is not always the case and it would depend on the cultural values, the ability of the children, and varying social factors. This article is concentrating on the reluctance that is observed in language teachers of adults when drama activities are introduced to them. The following is based on problems brought up by teachers when tackling using drama in ESL/EFL classes for the first time. They come from actual feedback from ELT teachers after I have given a drama workshop. These following "problems" were the most common negative feedback I received from teachers when asked to try drama activities in ELT. Remember, these are only a few complaints that I encountered many times. The majority of EFL teachers I have been in contact with use drama or communicative activities often and regularly. The two books I refer to are excellent resources for drama in ELT.

Kevin Keegan returns as Newcastle manager
The Associated Press Published: January 16, 2008 document.writeln(''); E-Mail Article Listen to Article Printer-Friendly 3-Column Format Translate Share Article Text Size LONDON Kevin Keegan is returning as Newcastle United manager to put the smile back on the face of Magpies fans. With Keegan watching from the stands, Newcastle won its third-round replay 4-1 against Stoke, a team it had drawn 0-0 with less than two weeks ago.
    Today in Sports
Another surprise as Federer falls Marco Sullivan wins Chamonix downhill to earn his first World Cup victory "The news broke this afternoon ... when I heard that, I was very, very excited," Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given said. "The hairs on the back of my neck were standing up." His team squandered a 12-point lead over the Red Devils, who made up the ground to win the title by four points. On the day United passed Newcastle, Keegan ranted on live TV, jabbing his finger furiously toward the camera and accusing rival manager Alex Ferguson of underhand verbal tactics. While Keegan moved on midway through the following season, to be replaced by Kenny Dalglish, Ruud Gullit, Bobby Robson, Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder and Allardyce, Ferguson was on a run of nine Premier League titles, five FA Cups and a Champions League title and is still going strong at Old Trafford.

EPL Round 22 recap by Paul O'Donnell FA Cup, League Cup and now back to the Prem. Can Spurs travel to the Bridge and challenge a depleted Chelsea and their unbeaten run of nearly four years on their home ground? Speaking of crosstown battles Fulham takes a bus ride to East London to visit West Ham in dire need of the points if there is to be survival for the Cottagers.
Those confrontations aside if I had my choice I'd be at Everton for their match with Man City as this one just could be the best of the round. The relegation zone fight between Derby and Wigan is another that will fire up the passions.
Speaking of passion, the boisterous fans from St James' Park have again pushed the board to a horrendous move in sacking Sam Allardyce (the 6th manager switch since the dismissal of Sir Bobby Robson). What this team needs is players, more effort and production from the big names on the roster. The constant turmoil the board has fostered has to be a demoralizing. Frankly, they are quite fortunate to be where they are in the table (11th) as their play to date doesn't really warrant that position. What they need is more from Alan Smith, Viduka and Michael Owen. With Damien Duff making his way back to full fitness this squad could be on the verge of a big change in form. If they can manage to keep their focus amid all the turmoil. A visit to Old Trafford is not likely to be of help right now for the Geordies.
Perhaps an even more significant move by a big star, Anelka signs with Chelsea in the Blues bid to reinforce their strike force. Sort of puts all that buzz about a lackluster winter window we were hearing about to bed doesn't it? What does this mean for Shevchenko? Does Anelka's move signal the end of Bolton's run in the top flight? Unless they use that money wisely to strengthen their team Bolton could be headed for the relegation zone. Without him wearing their shirt the Wanderers have very little to threaten their opponents goal.

In terms of quantity, you took part in what (at a conservative estimate) amounts to a 16,000-hour teachertraining course between the ages of 6 and 18. You had the chance to imitate or reject the model of between 30 and 60 professional teachers.
