Here are her answers to our Groupee Spotlight questions:
What is the focus of your community?
Mostly the "Young Wizards" novels that I've been writing for about twenty years now. The books have seen a considerable increase in their public profile and upswing in their popularity since the Harry Potter books started coming out...though it has to be said that that upswing had already started in the years immediately preceding the first HP book's release, when the YW novels were brought back into print by their present publisher, Harcourt, and we went onto the new one-per-year publication schedule.
When did your community first come to be and when did you add Groupee (same time?)

    Diane Duane and Peter Morwood
Working individually and together, Diane and Peter are Science Fiction/Fantasy authors and writers of live-action and animated screenplays. While both have been full-time writers for many years, Diane was first a psychiatric nurse (after losing a battle with calculus in pursuit of an astrophysics degree) and Peter is an escapee from the Civil Service with an English degree. Diane is probably best-known for her Young Wizards series, which started with So You Want To Be a Wizard? in 1983 and she is currently working on number nine, A Wizard of Mars , which will be published in autumn of 2008. Peter is particularly known for his fantasy series Horse Lords (recently republished as two omnibuses) and Tales of Old Russia . They've also written media tie-ins with their Star Trek books being especially well-received. The pair's last big TV project was a popular German mini-series

So You Want to Be a Wizard
by Diane Duane Series: Young Wizards #1 Publisher: Harcourt Printing: ISBN: 0-15-216250-X Format: Mass market Pages: Nita finds a book entitled So You Want to Be a Wizard in the career section of the library and is delighted with the idea. She is one of the few who will even notice the book, proving that she has the potential to be a wizard and understand the hidden magic in the world. At first, she cares mostly about protecting herself against the bullies who constantly pick on her, but she meets another boy who is also learning to be a wizard, they both take the pledge together, and they're then thrown into a struggle against the forces of evil with a small pin-prick of a white hole as a sidekick. This is very clearly young adult fare from the first page, starring protagonists early in their teenage years, a simple plot, clear-cut sides of good and evil, and a pointed lesson in power, responsibility, compassion, and rising above people who were tormenting you. It is the first book of Duane's famous Young Wizards series; set in a world just like ours, but where magic goes on outside the notice of everyone else. People don't notice it, or if they do, they invent other explanations for it, or don't remember it quite properly. And the magicians have a sacred trust: to fight, as best they can, the forces of entropy and darkness and secure for Life as much time as it can have. Simple it may be, but Duane doesn't write down to her reader. There are real choices for the heroes, some resulting in real loss and heart-ache, and glimmers of a satisfying underlying philosophy peek through the edges of the background. Much of the book is taken up by a nightmarish adventure through an alternate New York, full of evil machines come alive. What saves them, in addition to bits of magic obtained through treating their natural surroundings with respect, is a willingness to extend sympathy and understanding to even apparent enemies. Not the deepest moral exploration in the history of literature, but it works, as do the beautiful moments in Timeheart, the center of Duane's magical universe.

Ever wonder what the stars or the stones are thinking? Ever imagine what you would do to the bullies if you only had magic, or wonder if the house down the street were really haunted? Ever read a book under your covers? Then You may be a wizard! You can find out in this first book in the Young Wizard series by Diane Duane. From the first page, we realize that Nita Callahan has problems. After verbally sparring with Joanna, the local bully that plagues her existence, Nita takes to her heels in self-defense. Where to hide? Ah, the library! Nita dives into the sanctuary of the Children’s section, correctly reasoning that Joanna and her gang would never look for her there. As she wanders the aisles trailing her hand along the tops of the books, her finger gets snagged and her interest quickly follows when she reads the title that gazes nonchalantly back at her, So, You Want to be a Wizard…

    Title: Wizards at War
    Author: Diane Duane
    Pages: 552 p.
    Publisher: Harcourt
    ISBN: 0152047727
I read the first book in this series, So You Want to be a Wizard, when I was around 10 years old. That would be TWENTY years ago.
And I still love it just as much as I did then.
Wizards at War is the eighth book in the series. Having read the first 7 is required to truly understand and appreciate the eternal conflict between the Lone Power and the wizards. In this book the wizards must deal with expanding dark matter called pullulus. The pullulus is causing the universe to expand too quickly, causing senior wizards to lose their power and their faith, and causing regular humans to lose all emotion but anger. This is a dangerous situation and it's up to the young wizards to sort it all out. While Nita and Kit search for a powerful weapon to help defeat the pullulus, Dairine and Roshaun discover the pullulus is just a distractiona diversionary tactic used by the Lone Power to cover up an even more important mission. The young wizards join forces to battle the Lone Power and help usher a new benevolent Power into the world, but not without casualties.
    Spoiler:
I sped through this book in just a few days. Fans of the series will not be disappointed. Duane has done a wonderful job of universe-building and it's easy to forget that this is fantasy and not science fiction. I look forward to reading the next one and hope there is a next one. This book had a finale feeling to it, but there's enough loose ends to warrant another story. And fans certainly want one.

    A review by Todd Richmond
Advertisement A Wizard Abroad is Diane Duane's fourth Wizardry book. The Wizardry series began with So You Want to Be a Wizard , the story of young Nita Callahan, who finds a book at the library that introduces her to the art of Wizardry. The story of her wizardly exploits, and that of her partner Kit and her younger sister, Dairine, are told in Deep Wizardry and High Wizardry . The Wizardry series is a great set of books for younger readers. There's a place for both young wizards and old wizards in Duane's books. The youngest wizards are the strongest, but untrained. The older wizards have less raw power but have the experience necessary for more subtle and complex magic. The young wizards are introduced to the craft through a book that they "find". The book is like a computer the contents are continually changing based on what the wizard needs to know next. After a training period, the wizards are "on call", even the youngest. They report to a Senior Wizard, who in turn reports to an Area Senior, and so on. The young wizards have a hierarchy of elders to call upon if they need assistance or guidance, yet they are also given a great deal of responsibility for their specific assignments. It's an ideal recipe for young readers who hasn't wished for magical powers, the ability to travel to distant places or talk with trees or animals?
