      LADY OF KILMARTH
Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the iron gate leading to the drive, and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred to me. There was a padlock and chain upon the gate. I called in my dream to the lodge keeper, and had no answer, and peering closer through the rusted spokes of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited. Rebecca We came to the lodge at Four Turnings, as we had been instructed, and opened the creaking iron gates with the bluff and false courage common to the trespasser. The lodge was deserted. No one peered at us from the windows. Thus Daphne describes her first attempt to find Menabilly . Later she sees the house and her feeling for the place is very apparent. Grey, still, silent. The windows were shuttered fast, white and barred. Ivy covered the grey walls and threw tendrils round the windows. It was early still, and the house was sleeping. But later, when the sun was high, there would come no wreath of smoke from the chimneys. The shutters would not be thrown back, nor the doors unfastened. No voices would sound within those darkened rooms. Menabilly would sleep on, like the sleeping beauty of the fairy tale, until someone should come to wake her.

Her grandfather, George du Maurier, wrote the popular novel Trilby (1894). Her parents, Gerald and Muriel du Maurier, were actors. Du Maurier combined both her grandfather's writing skill and her parents' flair for drama in her own highly dramatic fiction. The author of 16 novels and numerous short stories, as well as plays, non-fiction, and poetry, du Maurier's popular acclaim began with her first novel, The Loving Spirit, published in 1931. Sir Frederick Browning liked The Loving Spirit so much that he sought out the young author and they married shortly after meeting. Du Maurier lived in Menabilly, which she discovered while walking in Cornwall and which became the prototype for Manderley, the setting for Rebecca. Reprinted more than 40 times, Rebecca is du Maurier's most famous novel. She died on April 19, 1989, in Par, Cornwall. ...

  • Introduction
English novelist, playwright, nonfiction writer, and editor. Regarded by many critics as a natural storyteller who made effective use of melodrama, du Maurier is best known for her Gothic novels and short stories. Unaffected by the literary fashions of her day, she wrote simple narratives that appealed to the average reader's love of adventure, fantasy, sensuality, and mystery. Perhaps best known for the Gothic novel Rebecca (1938), her writings have been extremely popular, and many have been adapted for film and television.
    BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Du Maurier was born in London to a family whose members had been successful in arts and entertainment. Her father was a matinee idol and theater manager, and her grandfather was an artist for Punch and the author of several novels. Du Maurier was privately educated, and her youth was a swirl of yachting and skiing parties and trips abroad with wealthy friends. Her career as a novelist began on a visit to Cornwall when she was twenty. According to Margaret Forster (see Further Reading), du Maurier "was one of those writers in whom the right place releases a certain sort of psychic energy…. Cornwall, with its wild seas Daphne Du Maurier and rocky coastline, its mists and moors, answered some deep longing inside her." She eventually settled there, and it became the setting of some her best-known stories. Much of her time was spent in Menabilly, a manor house in Cornwall that was the inspiration for Manderley, the location of her most famous novel

Daphne Du Maurier, the English writer who proved her ability in diverse literary genres including short stories, novels, biographies, autobiographies and travel books.
Daphne Du Maurier, later to become Lady Browning, was born in London one hundred years ago on 13th May 1907. She was the daughter of acclaimed actress Muriel Beaumont. Her father was the actor/writer Gerald Du Maurier who created the mad hypnotist Svengali.
A Stifling Home Life
Du Maurier solved this problem by convincing her parents that she should move to Ferryside, the family’s holiday home in the Cornish village of Fowey (now occupied by her son Christian). Her first short story "And Now to God the Father" was published when she was 22 in the Bystander , a magazine edited by her uncle, Willie Beaumont. Through him Du Maurier was able to make useful contacts but, naturally, the family name helped as well!

Brief and Straightforward Guide Who is daphne du maurier?

Who is Daphne Du Maurier?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Daphne du Maurier (1907-1989) is one of the finest suspense authors of the 20th century. She is best known for her novel Rebecca , the semi-gothic tribute to Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte . Most of her novels fall into the suspense category, some as chilling as anything composed by Edgar Allen Poe. Du Maurier also wrote non-fiction works lauded by both critics and fans. The relatively quiet life of du Maurier is in strict contrast to her fictional works. Du Maurier was born to famous actor and theater manager , Gerald du Maurier. Her literary heritage extends to her grandfather who was an illustrator and writer of the novels Trilby and Peter Ibbetson . She received an education at home with her siblings and then was sent to Paris to “finish” her education. Her first works were written when du Maurier was barely 21. Her first novel, The Loving Spirit was published in 1931, when du Maurier was 24. Du Maurier’s initial works did not receive much notice. However, her biography of her father, Gerald: A Portrait was considered exceptional, and was noted for being a particularly frank and honest evaluation of her father’s life.
