Compiled by Ryan Wamser Born on February 23, 1868, William Edward Burghart DuBois is seen along with Frederick Douglass, Booker T Washington, and Martin Luther King, Jr., as the four greatest black Americans in our nations history. Much like them, he was a leader of his people and was a man who sought to share fully with them through his works. DuBois attended Fisk University, Harvard University, and University of Berlin. Famous works by DuBois include The Philadelphia Negro The Souls of Black Folk The Gift of Black Folk Black Reconstruction in America Dusk of Dawn The Encyclopedia of the Negro The World and Africa , and The Education of Black People . Dubois was influential in the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and he also was an editor of its magazine, The Crisis . At the turn of the century, DuBois was an advocate of black capitalism and black support of black business, but by about 1905 he had been drawn toward Socialist doctrines. Although he joined the Socialist Party only briefly in 1912, he remained sympathetic with Marxist ideas throughout the rest of his life. DuBois died on August 27,1963, in Accra, Ghana, no longer a US citizen, but a citizen of Ghana.
"I believe, foolishly perhaps but sincerely, that I have something to say to the world."

W.E.B. Du Bois
At the turn of the twentieth century, William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, the most outspoken civil rights activist in America, committed himself to a style of political leadership which emphasized that, in order for African Americans to survive the inordinate stress and cruelty of racial discrimination, they had to make a “...determined attempt at self-development, self-realization, in spite of environing discouragement and prejudice.” The style called upon African Americans to seek full exercise of civil rights in the United States through militant protest and agitation.
Du Bois’s posture met with little popularity, for it was at the time that the nation had witnessed the undermining of the “Reconstruction Amendments”—which had given blacks the legal prerogatives of the vote, access to public facilities and services, and equal rights under the law—by the 1896 Supreme Court decision, Plessy v. Fergusson

Marking the Birthday of W.E.B. Du Bois
February 23 is a special day in American, African American, and world history. It is the birthday of W. E. B. Du Bois, perhaps the nation’s greatest intellectual and activist. And in a time of uncertain war, of religious and racial strife, and of national division, his legacy and contributions should be remembered. Born in 1868 in Massachusetts, he died in Ghana on the eve of the March on Washington in 1963. In his almost one hundred years, Du Bois helped transform the nation and inspired millions across the world. On February 23, 1968, the centennial of Du Bois’s birth and five years after his death, Martin Luther King, Jr., marked the occasion before a packed crowd in New York City’s Carnegie Hall, only weeks before being cut down by an assassin. King declared, “History cannot ignore W. E. B. Du Bois.” Du Bois recognized the power of remembering the past, of remembering those who had fought for rights and for truth. In King’s words, he “knew that to lose one’s history is to lose one’s self-understanding and with it the roots for pride.” And in 1968 (just as in 2007), Du Bois “needs to be remembered today when despair is all too prevalent.” In uncertain and troubling times, Du Bois “lived and fought.” Those of Du Bois’s generation, those who had lived through rigorous segregation, through regular lynchings, and through citywide race riots, had, according to King, “far more justification for frustration and hopelessness, and yet his faith in his people never wavered. His love and faith in Negroes permeate every sentence of his writings and every act of his life.”

Questions for Reading and Discussion/Approaches to Writing
"The Song of the Smoke" is a poem of celebration of blackness. It was written during a period of great social and political weakness of black people. List the attributes of blackness celebrated in the poem and suggest how each attribute contributes to a positive image. Consider why Du Bois may have felt it necessary to write of blackness in such exalted terms. Ask students to characterize the effect of verbal repetition, rhythm, and variation of line length in the poem. How do these characteristics relate to the central metaphor, "smoke"? "The Damnation of Women" is an expression of Du Bois's concern for the right of women to choose for themselves the life worth living. What is the basis for this belief? How does this belief relate to feminism? What role, in Du Bois's estimation, does economics play in the subordination of women? What specific details indicate Du Bois's appreciation for independent thinking and action in women? Select an edition of the volume The Souls of Black Folk and peruse the beginning of each chapter. Find lines of poetry and a musical score. Consider the possible significance of these two art forms to the major theme of the book. Note that "Of the Sorrow Songs" contains comments on the music and names the songs.

A Biographical Sketch
of
W.E.B. DuBois By Gerald C. Hynes Introduction

William Edward Burghardt DuBois, to his admirers, was by spirited devotion and scholarly dedication, an attacker of injustice and a defender of freedom. Labeled as a "radical," he was ignored by those who hoped that his massive contributions would be buried along side of him. But, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, "history cannot ignore W.E.B. DuBois because history has to reflect truth and Dr. DuBois was a tireless explorer and a gifted discoverer of social truths. His singular greatness lay in his quest for truth about his own people. There were very few scholars who concerned themselves with honest study of the black man and he sought to fill this immense void. The degree to which he succeeded disclosed the great dimensions of the man." His Formative Years
W.E.B. DuBois was born on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. At that time Great Barrington had perhaps 25, but not more than 50, Black people out of a population of about 5,000. Consequently, there were little signs of overt racism there. Nevertheless, its venom was distributed through a constant barrage of suggestive innuendoes and vindictive attitudes of its residents. This mutated the personality of young William from good natured and outgoing to sullen and withdrawn. This was later reinforced and strengthened by inner withdrawals in the face of real discriminations. His demeanor of introspection haunted him throughout his life.

W. E. B. duBois William Edward Burghardt DuBois was one of this country's most distinguished educators. Born in a small village in Massachusetts in 1868, DuBois first came face to face with the realities of racism in 19th century America while attending Fisk University in Nashville. It was while completing his graduate studies at Harvard that DuBois wrote an exhaustive study of the history of the slave trade one that is still considered one of the most comprehensive on that subject. In 1895 he was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Havard University. In 1897, DuBois took a position with Atlanta University. During his tenure there he conducted extensive studies of the social conditions of blacks in America. At the 1900 Paris World's Fair, DuBois created a full-scale exhibit of African American achievement since the Emancipation Procamation in industrial work, literature, and journalism. It included photodocumentation on educational institutions such as Tuskeegee, Fisk, and Howard. Congress approved of $15,000 for installation, and it was installed - off midway and in the Social Economy section of the Liberal Arts building where it languished compared with the negative Midway exhibits. In 1903 he wrote The Souls of Black Folk (which may be read online here ) which serves as the underpinning of access to many of his ideas.

The Person
My Birth and Family
I was born by a golden river and in the shadow of two great hills, five years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which began the freeing of American Negro slaves. The valley was wreathed in grass and trees and crowned to the eastward by the huge bulk of East Mountain, with crag and cave and dark forests. Westward the hill was gentler, rolling up to gorgeous sunsets and cloud-swept storms. The town of Great Barrington, which lay between these mountains in Berkshire County, Western Massachusetts, had a broad Main Street, lined with maples and elms, with white picket fences before the homes. The climate was to our thought quite perfect. In 1868 on the day after the birth of George Washington was celebrated, I was born on Church Street, which branched east from Main in midtown. The year of my birth was the year that the freedmen of the South were enfranchised, and for the first time as a mass took part in government. Conventions with black delegates voted new constitutions all over the South, and two groups of laborersfreed slaves and poor whitesdominated the former slave states. It was an extraordinary experiment in democracy. Thaddeus Stevens, the clearest-headed leader of this attempt at industrial democracy, made his last speech, impeaching Andrew Johnson on February 16, and on February 23 I was born.
