(Full name Anna Elisabeth Franziska Adolfine Wilhelmina Luisa Maria, Freiin Droste-H¼lshoff) German poet and novella writer. The following entry presents criticism on Droste-H¼lshoff from 1969 through 2001. For additional information on Droste-H¼lshoff's life and career, see NCLC, Volume 3.
    INTRODUCTION
Annette von Droste-H¼lshoff overcame frequent, debilitating illness and the restraints of a conservative family to become what many consider Germany's greatest woman poet. Droste-H¼lshoff pursued her poetic calling throughout her life, beginning very early in childhood, and published one novella and two collections of poetry during her lifetime. She also left a substantial body of finished and unfinished works that were published in the decades after her death. Her works are characterized by her interests in religion and social justice, even as they are marked by a deep interiority. Though her travels led her to meet some of Germany's cultural elite, she was primarily homebound. Like Emily Dickinson, to whom she has been compared, Droste-H¼lshoff was able to enlarge her world through extensive writing, producing a body of work that engaged Catholic religious traditions, German folklore, and Romantic literary ideas with independence and originality.

    Annette Von Droste-Hulshoff
I lived from 1797-1848. I was from Germany, and am in the European category. German poet, was born at the family seat of Hulshoff near Munster in Westphalia on the IO th of January 1797. Her early mental training was largely influenced by her cousin, Clemens August, Freiherr von Droste zu Vischering, who, as archbishop of Cologne, became notorious for his extreme ultramontane views; and she received a more liberal education than in those days ordinarily fell to a woman’s lot. Read full description by encyclopedia.org...
Von Droste-Hulshoff was, beyond doubt, the most gifted and original of German women poets. Her verse is strong and vigorous, but often unmusical even to harshness; one looks in vain for a touch of sentimentality or melting sweetness in it. As a lyric poet, she is at her best when she is able to attune her thoughts to the sober landscape of the Westphalian moorlands of her home. Her narrative poetry, and especially Das Hospiz auf dem Grossen St Bernard and Die Schlac/zt im Loener Bruch (both 1838), belongs to the best German poetry of its kind. She was a strict Roman Catholic, and her religious poems, published in 1852, after her death, under the title Das geistliche Jahr, nebst einem Anhang religioser Gedichte, enjoyed great popularity.
Annette von Droste-Hulshoff’s Gedichte were first published in 1844 during her lifetime, and a number of her poems were translated into English by Thomas Medwin. The most complete edition of her works is that in 4 vols. edited by E. von Droste-Hulshoff (Munster, 1886).

She was born at the family seat of H¼lshoff near M¼nster into an aristocratic Catholic family in Westphalia . She was educated by private tutors and began to write as a child, but did not publish any of her work until she was forty years old. Among her best-known writings are the cycle of poems Das geistliche Jahr (The Spiritual Year) and the novella Die Judenbuche (The Jew's Beech) Her early intellectual training was largely influenced by her cousin, Clemens August Freiherr von Droste zu Vischering , who, as archbishop of Cologne , became notorious for his extreme ultramontane views (see below). She received a wider liberal education than was common for women of her time. Despite her withdrawn and restricted life she corresponded with intellectual contemporaries such as the Brothers Grimm . As her health continually worsened, earning a living through her writing was never an option. Despite this, she took her literary work very seriously.

"Zeitbilder" (vignettes of the times). These works, written during the 1840s, indicated an acute awareness of the social and political changes in the period leading up to the 1848 revolution and challenged traditional interpretations of her life and work. She was educated by private tutors and began writing poetry as a child, developing quite early a sense of herself as a writer. When, in 1820, she was attracted to two men simultaneously, her relatives endeavored to "protect" the young men from a cousin whom they believed took herself too seriously. The ensuing trauma increased her isolation and fueled her ambition to write religious poems (Das geistliche Jahr) ; she did not publish the collection in her lifetime, presumably because she knew that their revelation of her own religious struggles would embarrass her family. Only after her fortieth birthday and then only with the help of friends and after having obtained her mother's approval did she begin to publish her writings. In addition to her poetry, first published in 1838 and in a more complete collection in 1844, she also wrote the novella
