This year is the fortieth anniversary of The Cat in the Hat Hardcover Library Binding Bilingual Spanish Cassette ) and that makes this a good opportunity to take a look at the contributions of Dr. Seuss. He began writing children's books in the 40s and most of them are still in print and even though he has been a favorite of several generations of children, it is only in recent years that children's literature writers and critics have even deigned to mention his name. No one has ever claimed that Seuss was a great poet, although many of his books use rhyme. Few would hold him up as one of the great illustrators yet neither can they deny his talent and capacity for creating delight in millions of readers. First, a few facts about his life: Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father was the curator of Forest Park Zoo. After graduating from Dartmouth College, Geisel launched a career in advertising, creating ads for Flit, an insecticide produced by Standard Oil. These ads consisted of a cartoon drawing of people enjoying a relaxing time reading or resting only to have a grotesque bug-like creature approach. The caption always read, "Quick, Henry, the Flit!" Looking at those cartoons today, you can see the seeds of the creatures that would later appear in his children's books.

Introduction
A long time ago (around 1994 or so) I went looking for information about Dr. Seuss on the net. I was expecting to find a lot; after all, he seemed like a natural subject for people to create pages about. I didn't find any. So, in a fit of despair, disappointment and desperation, I set about creating one. I gathered together a few parodies I found on the net, copied in all the entries from the current Books in Print did a couple of searches in the Internet Movie Database, and put it all in one place. This inspired people to do two things. 1) Send me email thanking me for having this page, and 2) Inspired them to create their own Dr. Seuss pages, having seen how empty mine were. Move to 1997. There are a number of Dr. Seuss sites out there. Some good, some bad, some official, some not. Mine still seems to be the only one with parodies on it, but y'know, that's not saying much these days. So, in a fit of frustration, and after-work energy, I go about re-vamping the pages.

(and a few other Dr. Seuss favorites) I like to use these lessons around Dr. Seuss' birthday which is March 2 and, if possible, spread the activities out over more than a week. Students love the rhyme and imaginative creatures that Dr. Seuss shares in his stories! The Cat in the Hat
Prior Knowledge: Discuss with students activities that they like to participate in on a rainy day. What types of feelings do they sometimes have on a rainy day? Introduce the Story: Introduce title, author and illustrator; Read aloud for enjoyment Comprehension : Discuss the feelings expressed by the characters in the story. Do they seem to like the Cat in the Hat's tricks? Ask students to describe how they would have felt. Discuss what things the Cat in the Hat did in the house that might have made their mom upset. Brainstorm ideas for what the characters in the story should have done when the Cat in the Hat entered their home without permission and how the children could have made the Cat in the Hat leave. (This is a good opportunity to discuss safety rules for when you are home alone.) Ask students if they think the boy and girl told their mother about the Cat in the Hat and to explain their answer. Dr. Seuss The beloved author of more than 46 children's books by Borgna Brunner At the time of Theodor Seuss Geisel's death in 1991, his 46 children's books had sold more than 200 million copies, and his last, Oh, the Places You'll Go! (1990), was still on the bestseller lists . His books, which he both illustrated and wrote, have been translated into twenty languages as well as Braille.
    Wockets, Whos, and Grinches
Better known by his pen name, Dr. Seuss, he populated his odd and fanciful children's books with a hybrid bestiary of Wockets, Whos, Grinches, bunches of Hunches, Bar-ba-loots, red fish, blue fish, and a fox in socks. He once remarked in an interview, "If I were invited to a dinner party with my characters, I wouldn't show up."
