"There are Fairies at the Bottom of our Garden..." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the Case of the Cottingley Fairies Chris Willis Birkbeck College In July 1917, two young Yorkshirewomen played a practical joke which was to have far-reaching consequences. Their photographs of themselves with 'fairies' were accepted as genuine by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and were the subject of speculation for over 60 years, until the two women revealed the truth. Elsie Wright was 16 in the summer of 1917. A former art student who had worked as a photographer's assistant, she lived with her parents in the village of Cottingley, near Bradford. Her 10-year-old cousin, Frances Griffiths was staying with the Wright family for a summer holiday, along with her mother. Young Frances was repeatedly told off for coming home with her clothes wet after playing in a stream which ran through the woods near the Wright's home. When her mother asked her why she spent so much time there, she replied that she went there to play with the fairies. Intrigued by her cousin's story, Elsie borrowed her father's camera one afternoon. When she helped her father Arthur develop the pictures she took, his first comment was, "You've been up to summat"(

Elementary, my dear reader (or Conan Doyle in Birmingham)

Arthur (later Sir Arthur) Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes Mysteries and more, lived and worked in Aston (now part of Birmingham, but then a separate town) for several months each year, from about Spring 1879 to early 1882. He was 19 at the beginning of that period, taking up a temporary medical assistantship, as a dispensing assistant (what we might call an assistant chemist or pharmacist) while studying at Edinburgh University. His employer and landlord in Birmingham was Dr Hoare, and Doyle developed a close friendship with his family, whom he visited more than once subsequently. Family members (but not Dr Hoare, who had died in 1898) joined such noted guests as J.M. Barrie, Jerome K. Jerome and Bram Stoker at Doyle's wedding at St Margaret's in Westminster in 1907.
Doyle wrote in his "Memories and Adventures" (p 28-9) of 1924 that:
"Hoare was a fine fellow, stout, square, red-faced bushy - whiskered and dark-eyed. His wife was also very kindly and gifted woman, and my position in the house was soon rather that of a son than of an assistant"

"... In every high profession - be it law, medicine, the Army, or literature - there are certain unwritten laws - a gentlemanly etiquette which is binding upon all, but most binding upon those who have a claim to stand among the leaders of the profession. If those who are successful advertise their own wares, and use the machinery of the Press in order to whet curiosity about their own book before it has come into the hands of the critics, the young aspirant naturally comes to imagine this is the cause of the success, and by his imitating the same tactics the whole tone of the profession becomes lowered."

    Conan Doyle, Arthur
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Conan Doyle's family was Roman Catholic thus he attended a preparatory school and then Stonyhurst, a Jesuit Public school in Lancashire. He also spent a year at Feldkirch College in Austria when he was sixteen, and despite being a Jesuit school, Conan Doyle started to draw away from the church and develop his belief in agnosticism. In 1876, Conan Doyle entered medical school at the University of Edinburgh. It was in medical school that he first became interested in spiritualism and met Dr. Joseph who was to become the model for Sherlock Holmes. While he was still a student, Conan Doyle became a surgeon on a whaler that traveled to the Arctic. He graduated in 1881 with a Master of Surgery and again worked on a ship, this time going to West Africa. In 1885, Arthur Conan Doyle married the sister of one of his patients and a year later, he would begin to write his first Sherlock Holmes story. The first Sherlock Holmes story A Study in Scarlet appeared in Beetons' Christmas Annual in 1887. In the following years, Conan Doyle would publish two historical novels
