Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930)
Although his fame comes from his creation of the renowned fictional sleuth Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle's career was a varied one. He worked on board an Arctic whaler as a doctor, was a war correspondent in Egypt, and even stood, unsuccessfully, for Parliament. Conan was originally the author's middle name, but in his later years he used it as part of his surname. Conan Doyle trained as a medical doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. His career took him around the world, bringing him into contact with exotic cultures and beliefs - some of which he wove into the characters in his novels. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in

Doyle, Arthur Conan Biography
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools. During this period Doyle lost his belief in the Roman Catholic faith but the training of the Jesuits influenced deeply his mental development. Later he used his friends and teachers from Stonyhurst College as models for his characters in the Holmes stories, among them two boys named Moriarty. He studied at Edinburgh University and in 1884 he married Louise Hawkins. Doyle qualified as doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine as an eye specialist at Southsea near Porsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when he became a full time writer. Doyle had produced his first story, an illustrated tale of a man and a tiger, at the age of six. Doyle's first story about Holmes, A STUDY IN SCARLET, was published in 1887 in

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted in 1902, there was some speculation that the honor was bestowed to recognize his achievement in The Hound of the Baskervilles. But the more seemly prelude was his pamphlet, The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct, The Sign of the Four, has some of the elements of the adventure story for boys, with its recollection of the bloody Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Among the most notable of his historical adventures are The White Company (1891) and Sir Nigel (1906). Conan Doyle, trained in medicine and with a sharp eye for scientific and logical plausibility, also wrote a number of science fiction stories. The character Professor Challenger of 1912's The Lost World, about living remnants of the prehistoric world, did not match Holmes in popularity, but he did inspire a large following himself, and he appeared again in other science fiction adventures, including The Poison Belt in 1913, and a collection of stories published posthumously in 1952. Upon his death in 1930, Conan Doyle left his family with the conviction that he would surely communicate with them from the spirit world which he held so dear.

THE RING OF THOTH

The Cornhill Magazine
The most fickle of wooers, however, is apt to be caught at last, and so it was with John Vansittart Smith. The more he burrowed his way into Egyptology the more impressed he became by the vast field which it opened to the inquirer, and by the extreme importance of a subject which promised to throw a light upon the first germs of human civilisation and the origin of the greater part of our arts and sciences. So struck was Mr. Smith that he straightway married an Egyptological young lady who had written upon the sixth dynasty, and having thus secured a sound base of operations he set himself to collect materials for a work which should unite the research of Lepsius and the ingenuity of Champollion. The preparation of his magnum opus entailed many hurried visits to the magnificent Egyptian collections of the Louvre, upon the last of which, no longer ago than the middle of last October, he became involved in a most strange and noteworthy adventure. The trains had been slow and the Channel had been rough, so that the student arrived in Paris in a somewhat befogged and feverish condition. On reaching the Hotel de France, in the Rue Laffitte, he had thrown himself upon a sofa for a couple of hours, but finding that he was unable to sleep, he determined, in spite of his fatigue, to make his way to the Louvre, settle the point which he had come to decide, and take the evening train back to Dieppe. Having come to his conclusion, he donned his greatcoat, for it was a raw rainy day, and made his way across the Boulevard des Italiens and down the Avenue de l'Opera. Once in the Louvre he was on familiar ground, and he speedily made his way to the collection of papyri which it was his intention to consult.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh in 1859. Both his parents Charles Altamont Doyle and Mary (Foley) Doyle were Roman Catholics.
Doyle married Louise Hawkins in 1884.
Doyle studied medicine at Edinburgh University and he graduated as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine at Southsea near Portsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when he started writing full time. Doyle's published his first story about Sherlock Holmes, “A Study in Scarlet” in 1887. He wrote the novel in three weeks in 1886. The second Sherlock Holmes story, “The Sign of the Four” followed and The Strand Magazine started to publish 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' in July 1891. The Sherlock Holmes stories became very popular, and Doyle decided to discontinue the series about the famous detective. The author killed his legendary detective Sherlock Holmes in “The Final Problem”, which was published at the end of 1893. During the South African War (1899-1902) Arthur Conan Doyle served as a doctor in a field hospital. During this period he wrote “The Great Boer War”. Doyle returned to England in 1902 and was knighted. He published another Sherlock Holmes story “The Hound of the Baskervilles” in 1902. He continued to write stories about Holmes and Watson.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes mysteries was the model for his own character "Dr. Watson." He dedicated his medical skills to the army during the South African (Boer) War. He wrote the first edition of " The Great Boer War " in 1900, later updating it to cover the war to its end in 1902. In the Preface to the First Edition, he wrote: "This book was begun in England and continued on board a steamer, but the greater part was written in a hospital tent in the intervals during the epidemic at Bloemfontein." Preface to the Final Edition
My private informants are so numerous that it would be hardly possible, even if it were desirable, that I should quote their name~. of the correspondents upon whose work I have drawn for my materials, I would acknowledge my obligations to Messrs. Burleigh, Nevinson, Battersby, Stuart, Amery, Atkins, Baillie, Kinneir, Churchill, James, Ralph, Barnes, Maxwell, Pearce, Hamilton, and others. Especially I would mention the gentleman who represented the `Standard' in the last year of the war, whose accounts of Vlakfontein, Von Donop's Convoy, and Tweebosch were the only reliable ones which reached the public.

- The Haunted Museum - SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
In the early days of 1886, a young and at that time, not very successful, doctor named Arthur Conan Doyle was living in a the small English village of Southsea. In between his few patients, he began jotting down notes about a story that he planned to write about a detective who lived on Baker Street in London and his faithful companion, a young doctor who had returned from action in Afghanistan. When he settled on the name of "Sherlock Holmes" for the detective and decided to write the story in the words of the doctor, John H. Watson, Doyle began to write the story. At that moment, one of the most powerful and enduring sets of characters in the history of literature was born. In the years that followed, Conan Doyle and his especially his famous detective became known throughout the world. Sir Arthur would go on to achieve a remarkable career as an author and as a vivid public figure. He became personally involved in a number of causes, including using his own deductive skills to free two innocent men from prison. He also championed military and social reforms that were well ahead of their time and was even knighted for his service during the Boer War. In addition, he also introduced skis to the country of Switzerland and chronicled the history of the British Army during World War I. But all of these achievements, at least in the mind of Conan Doyle, paled in comparison to what he believed was his greatest crusade the promotion of Spiritualism around the world. Around the time of World War I. Doyle converted publicly to Spiritualism and he set aside his writing career to lecture and travel the world for the Spiritualist cause.
