Introduction:
A decade or more ago I staged an exhibition of the items I then considered to be the One Hundred Basic Books, Pamphlets and Periodicals relating to Sherlock Holmes. The catalog of this display was never issued and over the years I have had many requests for the list, especially from new recruits to the Cult. I thought that at my 1983 workshops it would be of interest to distribute such a list and I plan to provide a copy to each participant: to guide him through the welter of words that have been printed about Mr. Holmes, his life and times and career, his friends and enemies, and his standing today as a world figure who lives and is revered and respected by all. I have tried to list One Hundred items which would give one an in-depth view of the entire Holmesian culture. Selection was a most difficult task and I am sure that a number of valuable items have been omitted and that of some of those included many will think better left out. It was especially difficult to limit the inclusion of works done in an ephemeral way as gift books, in periodicals, in a form not yet collected between covers, in foreign languages, and so on. Thus I have had to neglect for this listing a number of fine contributions by such writers as Jay Finley Christ, Lord Donegall, Charles Honce, Nathan Bengis, and Edgar W. Smith. I must not fail to mention the many charming, profound and interesting contributions to The Writings About The Writings done by foreign authors such as Henry Lauritzen, A. D. Henriksen, Karl Krejci-Graf, Ted Bergman, Rudolph Cechura, Kohki Naganuma and many others.

He studied to be a doctor at the University of Edinburgh and set up a small practice at Southsea in Hampshire during his 20s. While the practice proved largely unsuccessful, the lack of patients provided him with the opportunity to create possibly the most popular character ever introduced in the history of fiction, Sherlock Holmes. While at University, Conan Doyle had been greatly influenced by John Bell, one of his professors. Bell was an expert in the use of deductive reasoning to diagnose disease. Conan Doyle was so impressed that he used these same principles when creating his famous detective. Sherlock Holmes was introduced in A Study in Scarlet (1887), followed by

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a biography
The life and career of Arthur Conan Doyle spanned six decades. His varied life experiences helped to create one of the greatest literary detectives of all time.
In 1855, Charles Altamont and Mary Foley Doyle were married. Four years later, on May 22, 1859, Mary gave birth to Arthur Conan Doyle in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was one of ten children, of which seven survived to adulthood. The Doyle family were Catholic with roots in Ireland. Arthur's father was a civil servant most of his life, working for the Edinburgh Office of Works. Arthur's mother ran a boarding house. Arthur entered Hodder Prep, a Jesuit-run school, in 1868. Two years later, he moved to Stonyhurst public school, another Jesuit-run educational institution. At Stonyhurst, he was noted for his untidiness and his determination to go his own way. His nature responded to kindness and rebelled against threats. Arthur spent a good portion of his time in the headmaster's office. The only suggestion of a literary nature during this time was a year spent as editor of the Stonyhurst school magazine. In 1874, Arthur took and passed his university matriculation exam. Before entering Edinburgh University in 1876, he spent a year at a Jesuit school in Austria brushing up on his German. A lack of money during school required him to take outside jobs to earn money for tuition. During the summer of 1878, he worked with a doctor in general practice.

Preface - The Case Book Of Sherlock Holmes
I fear that Mr. Sherlock Holmes may become like one of those popular tenors who, having outlived their time, are still tempted to make repeated farewell bows to their indulgent audiences. This must cease and he must go the way of all flesh, material or imaginary. One likes to think that there is some fantastic limbo for the children of imagination, some strange, impossible place where the beaux of Fielding may still make love to the belles of Richardson, where Scott's heroes still may strut, Dickens's delightful Cockneys still raise a laugh, and Thackeray's worldlings continue to carry on their reprehensible careers. Perhaps in some humble corner of such a Valhalla, Sherlock and his Watson may for a time find a place, while some more astute sleuth with some even less astute comrade may fill the stage which they have vacated. I had fully determined at the conclusion of The Memoirs to bring Holmes to an end, as I felt that my literary energies should not be directed too much into one channel. That pale, clear-cut face and loose-limbed figure were taking up an undue share of my imagination. I did the deed, but fortunately no coroner had pronounced upon the remains, and so, after a long interval, it was not difficult for me to respond to the flattering demand and to explain my rash act away. I have never regretted it, for I have not in actual practice found that these lighter sketches have prevented me from exploring and finding my limitations in such varied branches of literature as history, poetry, historical novels, psychic research, and the drama. Had Holmes never existed I could not have done more, though he may perhaps have stood a little in the way of the recognition of my more serious literary work.

Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859, into a large family with ancient historical roots. His education took place at home until he was sent away to a Jesuit school at the age of nine. He studied medicine at Edinburgh from 1876 to 1881. While at University and after, he took positions as ship’s doctor on voyages to Africa and the Artic. After completing his education, Doyle set up his own medical practice, and wrote in his spare time. His famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, was created and made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet , published in 1887. He then wrote a long historical named called Micah Clarke , published in 1889, before returning to Sherlock Holmes with The Sign of Four When the Strand magazine was created in 1891, Doyle saw it as an opportunity to revive Holmes for a series of shorter adventures. However, although the mysteries brought him success, Doyle was drawn to more serious writing and resolved to kill Sherlock Holmes. He attempted to do so in December of 1893 with The Final Problem , and afterwards wrote many other novels in various genres, but the public outcry caused him to eventually resurrect the detective for further cases. His stories were the forerunner of the great Golden Age of mystery in the 20’s and 30’s.

Conan Doyle's Trick
As strange as it may seem Arthur Conan Doyle , the creator of the ultra-rational detective, Sherlock Holmes, was a believer in Spiritualism. He came to his belief, that one could communicate with the dead, after his son was killed in World War I. Conan Doyle became an expert in the field and even wrote a two volume History of Spiritualism in 1926. Harry Houdini , perhaps America's foremost magician in those years, was a friend of Conan Doyle's, but was skeptical of Spiritualism. Houdini took every opportunity to use his understanding of magical illusion to expose mediums and psychics he thought were fakes. He was particularly incensed by those who took advantage of grieving relatives to make a profit. Because of this difference Conan Doyle's and Houdini's friendship was not always an easy one. For this reason Conan Doyle, who had come to the states in 1922 to give a series of lectures on Spiritualism, regarded with suspicion an invitation by Houdini to attend the annual meeting of the

Like the elusive Sherlock Holmes, his most famous creation, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a man of many contradictions. Scientifically educated, he believed in s?ances and fairies. An advocate for more equitable divorce laws, he believed that women should be denied the vote. A humanist who identified with oppressed peoples, he staunchly defended English colonialism at its most aggressive. He dreamed of being a serious historical novelist, yet he is best remembered for stories that he considered pot-boilers. The product of a pragmatic, fiercely protective mother and a detached dreamer of a father, Conan Doyle became a man with astonishing self-confidence, a tireless self-promoter who also retained some measure of childish innocence throughout his life. Arthur Conan Doyle at 4 years old
Arthur Conan Doyle's humble beginnings did not predict his future success. Born on May 22, 1859, to a middle-class, Catholic family, he grew up on Edinburgh's rough-and-tumble streets, far from his successful grandfather and uncles, who hobnobbed with London's intellectual elite. His celebrated grandfather, John Doyle, had reinvented the art of political caricature. John Doyle's eldest son, also named John, became a well-known caricaturist himself, and the second son, Richard, began his career as a successful cartoonist for

Trained as a medical student and fascinated by forensic diagnosis, Conan Doyle became famous as a fiction writer when he created one of the world's most memorable literary characters, the fastidious and eminently logical detective Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle turned out dozens of wildly popular Sherlock Holmes short stories, which gave birth to hundreds of radio, television, and movie dramatizations. He also produced historical novels and military chronicles; he devoted much of his later life to essays and nonfiction expounding on his deep belief in spiritualism.
