Marjory Stoneman Douglas
This article was written by Deborah Straw The Everglades Marjory Stoneman Douglas became known during her lifetime, all one hundred eight years of it, as the Everglades' patron saint, primarily because of her 1947 book The Everglades: River of Grass . The book, one of The Rivers of America Series , continues to be in print, selling more than 10,000 copies a year. Since this title emerged, the area has been popularly known as the "River of Grass" although many new residents do not even know where the name originated. Also, in 1947, Mrs. Douglas helped lead the campaign to have the central core of the Everglades preserved as Everglades National Park. In 1969, Mrs. Douglas spearheaded The Friends of the Everglades, a conservation organization of 5,000 members, a testament to the importance of the Everglades. Membership still costs only one dollar a year. The biggest honor the physically small woman received during her lifetime was this: in December 1997, a 1.3 million-acre wilderness area in the Everglades was dedicated in her name on the Park's fiftieth anniversary. The Everglades in South Florida is one of the most magnificent parcels of land and water in the United States. It's hot, humid and romantic. Thousands of species of birds, reptiles, mammals, insects, fish and flowers inhabit this semi-tropical southernmost tip of the mainland. Just a few are egrets, herons, black bears, white-tailed deer, Florida panthers, palm trees, skinks, alligators and a variety of sea turtles. Originally more than 4,000 square miles, the Everglades today has shrunk to less than half this size as a result of extensive drainage, over-construction and pollution. In late 1998, a comprehensive restoration plan began in an effort between the Army Corps of Engineers and the South Florida Water Management District. But if it wasn't for this indefatigable womana writer and environmentalistwho fell in love with this "river of grass" in the early part of the century, the Everglades might not be in existence at all.

Memories of Marjory Stoneman Douglas and Her Everglades Crusade, Foresight, Fall 1998
BY Nathaniel Pryor Reed, Chairman
Everyone who loves the Everglades recognizes the unique contribution that Marjory Stoneman Douglas (1890-1998) made to the continuing effort to enhance the remains of what once was a near perfect jewel of a natural system. I first met the extraordinary Marjory in 1960 on my return to Florida from military service. She was on one of her then frequent forays up the east coast of Florida, spinning her tale of the Everglades as a system. She described the destruction that was being implemented by the Army Corps of Engineers as they proceeded with the congressionally-authorized Central and South Florida Control Plan. The Everglades was being walled in, its boundaries dramatically shrunk. It was being unnaturally drained; its lifeline of fresh, clean water was imperiled. At the time, I felt that Marjory had gone too far. But years later, having served 14 years on the South Florida Water Management District, I am convinced that Marjory was right. Sugar production in Florida has made for incredible wealth among a small group of investors and, in my opinion, is the cause of political influence that is being misused.

'Conservation is now a Dead Word': Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the Transformation of American Environmentalism
Jack E. Davis
The Everglades: River of Grass , a path-breaking book that later became the green bible of Florida environmentalists. Even Douglas's antagonists respected her knowledge and foresight. Through many years of lobbying, writing, educating, and cajoling, she helped raise the plight of the Everglades to the top of the national agenda, resulting in important state and federal legislation that signified changing environmental policy. Countless honors and awards acknowledged her work as a writer and environmentalist. The one that capped her public career was the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the government's highest civilian honor, which she received at age 103. When she died in 1998, at 108, she had been one of the most celebrated environmental leaders in the last decades of the twentieth century. President Clinton, who once described Douglas as Mother Nature herself, said she had been "both an inspiration and mentor for a generation." Miami Herald . When he brought her onto the newspaper, she embarked on a writing career that lasted more than eighty years, including twenty devoted to short stories and over fifty to books. Four years older than Miami, she found her new city poised to expand its horizons. The south Florida city was an urban island of approximately eleven thousand residents in a frontier wilderness. Fanning out across the state, the Everglades made a natural boundary for the city's westward growth in the days before successful drainage. Pine forests with a dense palmetto understory lay to the north, and to the south wetlands ran to the sea. The city's hinterland was as wild as any nineteenth-century territory in the American West. Extended to Miami in 1896, the Florida East Coast Railroad opened the south Florida territory to unforeseen levels of growth and exploitation.
