Michael Koryta, interviewed by Steve Hamilton These events are held in private homes, and they're similar to Literary Salons. Since so many of our cyber members and friends aren't able to attend these intimate evenings, I thought it would be fun to have a "visiting" author each month interviewed by another "visiting" author. This month we feature Michael Koryta , interviewed by Steve Hamilton In 2003, Michael Koryta became the youngest winner of the annual St. Martin's Press/Private Eye Writers of America "Best First Private Eye Novel" contest. Michael wrote the winning novel, Tonight I Said Goodbye , when he was just 20. It was published when he was 21. It went on to earn an Edgar nomination for best first novel and to win the Great Lakes Book Award for Best Mystery. His most recent novel, A Welcome Grave , third in the Lincoln Perry series, has been nominated for a Quill Award, and his work has been translated into many languages. Michael lives in Bloomington, Indiana, where he attended Indiana University, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Previously an award-winning newspaper reporter, he now works for a detective agency in Bloomington and also teaches for the Indiana University School of Journalism. Michael Koryta: You chose the same route to publication that I did a few years before you, by entering the book in the PWA/St. Martin's Press Best First Private Eye Novel Contest. I'm sure you'll agree with me in hindsight that all three SMP contests (an MWA contest was added this year, to go along with the PWA and Malice Domestic) are probably the best shots for an unknown writer to break into the business, but at the time you were writing that manuscript, how did you become aware of the contest? And what made you think to enter it?

Jump to: navigation search Carole Nelson Douglas is a prolific American writer. She is best known for two popular mystery series, the Irene Adler mysteries and the Midnight Louie mystery series. Douglas was a theater major in college. Later she worked as a television reporter in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. During her time there, she was assigned to work on a story about a local animal shelter , and featured one of the cats there, called Midnight Louie, in the reports. The cat did not survive. Each of the volumes of the Midnight Louie series includes the dedication "For the real and original Midnight Louie. Nine lives were not enough." She began writing fiction in the late 1970s and discovered that she preferred mixing genres. She later married Sam Douglas.

REVIEW: Dancing with Werewolves by Carole Nelson Douglas
Dear Ms. Nelson Douglas, The thing I like about the Juno imprint is that it offers a wide variety of fantasy novels featuring strong female protagonists. The titles have run the gamut from sword and sorcery to fantasy romance. So when Dancing with Werewolves arrived on my doorstep, I looked forward to reading this urban fantasy. 66 days ago by janeda in Dear Author: Romance Book Reviews, Author Interviews, and Commentary

Delilah Street was named after where she was found abandoned as a baby. She grew up in an orphanage, the center of constant attacks of one kind or another. Delilah is what she refers to as vampire bait. With black hair and pale creamy skin she has every vampire in a 100 mile area putting the moves on her, or at least trying to. But growing up like that taught Delilah how to defend herself. It also gave her a nose for the paranormal.
Once in Vegas she runs into Ric Montoya, a former FBI agent who has a nose for finding dead bodies. When the two connect over a double grave everything that Delilah knows about herself will change. Haunted by strange alien abduction nightmares and coming to terms with the fact that she might not be completely human, Delilah and Ric unravel the mystery of the dead couple.

    Carole Nelson Douglas

Not many people find their calling at four years of age. Of course, the very young Carole Nelson Douglas never guessed providing food and overnight shelter to stray animals would prove a necessary step towards writing bestsellers in mystery, fantasy and romance. She just wanted a cat. Eventually, she got her cat and much more. Talking to Crescent Blues , Douglas reflects on her many writing lives, her series, her satire, and a four-legged shamus named Louie. Crescent Blues: When you first started writing fiction, did you ever dream you'd be writing so much about a big, black tomcat? Carole Nelson Douglas: From my first novels, I made sure that animals were in my books because they play a large part in my life, and always have, and because I thought their presence, even if just as background figures, made fiction more realistic. In my very first novel
