AUGUSTA, Ga. "The Art of John Dos Passos," featuring 64 vibrant watercolors and six pieces of book jacket art by one of the great American writers of the 20th century, will be on view through Sunday, Nov. 25, at the Morris Museum of Art.
Over a period of 50 years, John Dos Passos (1896-1970) wrote 42 literary works and created more than 400 works of art, providing a panoramic social history of the world he knew. The artworks presented in "The Art of John Dos Passos" chronicles his extensive travels as well as his dedication to creative and individual freedom.
"[John] Dos Passos is known primarily as a great novelist, and as a contemporary of Hemingway and Fitzgerald," said Jay Williams, curator of the Morris Museum of Art. "His visual art shows us another aspect of his open and inquiring mind. In paintings, such as Figuig 27 and his nude figures, he incorporates a number of ideas from such contemporary European artists as Matisse and Picasso. For example, he distorts perspective and flattens space; and he creates dynamic compositions using brightly colored organic and geometric shapes.
"This was all a part of questioning tradition and experimenting with new ways of communicating perceptions and feelings."

    John Dos Passos
One of Chicago's most famous novelists, John Dos Passos was born here in 1896. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1916. Like several other well-known writers of his generation, he volunteered in World War I before the US entered the war. The next time the United States went to war, Dos Passos served as a war correspondent for Life Magazine in the Pacific and South America. The observation and writing skills he learned as a reporter came through in his fictional works; in fact, critics have sometimes even faulted him for being too objective. Critics count Dos Passos among America's greatest writers, but many note a decline in the artistic quality of his work over time. While Sinclair Lewis hailed "Manhattan Transfer" as one of the most important novels ever written, works from later in Dos Passos's life have been greeted with less enthusiasm. His most contentious work is the trilogy "USA," a novel of protest with a distinct tone that is difficult to pin down.

The City in Wartime By JOHN DOS PASSOS I. The West Faces East It was the foggy end of a drizzly day. Along the lunch counter of the Ferry Dock Tavern gray-haired men in overalls and leather jackets were eating oyster stew. A set of hamburgers sizzling on the electric plate sent little wisps of the smell of scorched beef up through the cigarette smoke. From outside, through the loosely slapped together boards of the frame building, came the hoots and howls of steamboat whistles. Through every crevice the fog seeped into the tavern, bringing with it a tang of rotting evergreens and giving faint ruddy halos to the bare electric light bulbs. Against the window-panes and the glass of the door the white fog pressed snugly as flannel. In front of me a stocky black-jowled man in a tightly buttoned pea jacket was addressing a very young blank-faced sailor who sat on the next stool with his blue pancake cap pushed far down on his forehead.

Volume 48, Number 4 Send this article to a friend. Dos Passos in the Desert Written by Robert W. Lebling Jr.
Photographed by Norman MacDonald On a cold December morning in 1921, a battered Model-T Ford chugged into Ramadi, a town on the west bank of the Euphrates in British-mandate Iraq. Ramadi, on the eastern edge of the Syrian Desert, was the staging point for camel caravans carrying goods from Baghdad across the desert to Damascus. The car pulled up to the edge of a caravan encampment. Great bales of tobacco, rolled Persian carpets and boxes of other goods were stacked in mounds, ready for the pack camels. Four bearded men in Arab dress stepped out of the car and headed toward the caravan master's tent. The youngest of the four, about 25 years old, wore a brown robe with a broad white stripe, and a black-and-white checked headcloth held in place with a black cord. His beard was about three weeks old. If it weren't for the steel-rimmed spectacles he wore, he might have been taken for an Arab. Manhattan Transfer (1925) and the U.S.A.

For More On John Dos Passos We are in a cabin deep down below decks on a Navy ship jam-packed with troops that’s pitching and creaking its way across the Atlantic in a winter gale. There is a man in every bunk. There’s a man wedged into every corner. There’s a man in every chair. The air is dense with cigarette smoke and with the staleness of packed troops and sour wool. “Don’t think I’m sticking up for the Germans,” puts in the lanky young captain in the upper berth, “but…” “To hell with the Germans,” says the broad-shouldered dark lieutenant. “It’s what our boys have been doing that worries me.” The lieutenant has been talking about the traffic in Army property, the leaking of gasoline into the black market in France and Belgium even while the fighting was going on, the way the Army kicks the civilians around, the looting. “Lust, liquor and loot are the soldier’s pay,” interrupts a red-faced major. The lieutenant comes out with his conclusion: “Two wrongs don’t make a right.”

Sphere.Inline.search('sphereSideBar','http://time.com/') tiiQuigoWriteAd(755769, 1290761, 180, 200, -1); John Dos Passos became a figure for national discussion when his Three Soldiers appeared two years ago. Its bitter, naturalistic tone was criticized by many as " disloyal." By others it was hailed as" the Truth about the War." Most critics agreed that it was a capable and occasionally brilliant piece of writing. Since then this young Harvard graduate has published a volume of poems, a volume of essays, painted a series of pictures which were exhibited in Manhattan and made two trips to Europe, from one of which he is at the moment making the return voyage. His novel of puzzled and groping youth, Streets of Night, will be published shortly. I met Dos Passos at a tea in Greenwich Village. He is a large-headed, stumbling figure, who appears far younger than he is (27). He talks as he walks, in starts and stumbles. He is unbelievably shy. He will sit for hours at a table, either talking brilliantly or listening to talk not so brilliant. Two days after I met him, the manuscript of Three Soldiers was in my hands. Dos Passos left for Spain before the book was published. He is curiously detached from active interest in his books after they are written.
