French literature - By the eve of World War II, new influences were at work on the French cultural scene. From the mid-1930s onward, the novels of the American writers William Faulkner and John Dos Passos, as well as the philosophies of the Germans Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger, were finding a following in France. John Dos Passos, Blaise Cendrars, and the "other" modernism
Twentieth Century Literature Fall, 1996 by William Dow The interwar French avant-garde long considered John Dos Passos as an eminent literary figure. Dos Passos's influence on French writers and editors, such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Claude-Edmond Magny, is now, of course, a critical commonplace. Sartre, in his 1938 article on U.S.A., considered Dos Passos to be "the greatest writer of our time" (80). Magny, in her preface to the 1949 French edition of The 42nd Parallel, praised Dos Passos as an innovative portrayer of "la condition humaine" (Stolzfus 218). Critics have also recognized the influence of avant-garde painters on Dos Passos and extensively documented his various biographical associations with France.(1)

American writer, whose bitter, highly impressionistic novels attacked the hypocrisy and materialism of the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. His writings influenced several generations of American and European novelists.
After the publication of U.S.A., Dos Passos's radical philosophy became increasingly conservative. At the same time his writing became less impassioned and his style became more direct and simple. He continued to produce a great deal of work, including several novels and books of personal observation, history, biography, and travel. The best-received work was Midcentury (1961), a novel in which he returned to the kaleidoscopic technique of his earlier successes to depict a panoramic view of postwar America. At the time of his death, Dos Passos had finished most of his last novel, The Thirteenth Chronicle. Posthumously published were Easter Island (1971), a travel book; and The Fourteenth Chronicle (1973), his diaries and letters.

Mark Twain and John Dos Passos On War
Mark Twain an John Dos Passos have similar viewpoints of war in their writings, although Twain is a traditional 19 th century fiction writer, and Dos Passos is a modernist of the Harlem Renaissance; from Twain, The War Prayer , and Dos Passos, The Body of an American A personal biography, of sorts, is necessary to understand the political climates each writer faced, and also their own political viewpoints. Twain wrote The War Prayer in response to the Spanish/American war. Having written works such as Huckleberry Finn, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer , it is ironic that in his later years he would write political satire and become something of an activist. Twain joined the American Anti-Imperialist League as a pulpit for his views. Feeling that Americas involvement with Spain was simply an attempt to further colonize, he spoke out vehemently against the war, which was unexpected from the masses familiar with his more light-hearted fictional writings. His last years were spent abroad, mostly in England and Austria, and he became well known more for his philosophy than his fiction. Earning an honorary degree from Oxford, and completing several important works on imperialism and racism, Twain died leaving many unfinished undertakings in 1910.

William Blake illustrated his poetry, John Lennon painted and, like the novelist D. H. Lawrence, the writer John Dos Passos sketched and painted. In 1938, Jean-Paul Sartre called Dos Passos "the greatest novelist of our time," and he is still considered one of the major American literary figures of the 20 th century. His was a leading voice among the Lost Generation of revolutionary expatriate writers and artists who fled America to Europe and grappled with social, political and cultural uncertainty in the wake of World War I. Dos Passos arrived on the literary scene in September 1921 with the publication of his antiwar novel, The Three Soldiers . Another novel, Manhattan Transfer , was published in 1925, and the experimental, panoramic trilogy USA The 42 nd Parallel Nineteen Nineteen , and The Big Money ) was a major literary work of the 1930s.
