Male Masters/Personal Emotions H.D. met the poet Ezra Pound when she was fifteen and was engaged to him for a year. Before Pound left for Europe, he introduced her to his close friend William Carlos Williams, another poet. In 1909, H.D. herself left for Europe and settled in London, making friends there with the likes of Ford Madox Ford, William Butler Yeats, and Richard Aldington whom she would marry in 1913. The shaping influences of these various male acquaintances are felt in her fýrst book of poetry Miscellaneous Poems (1914, later published in Collected Poems 1912-1944 ) which contains vorticist overtones. In “Oread,” the Greek mountain nymph Eomprehends sings of the pleasure she gets in union with the sea: Whirl up, sea -

H. D. (Hilda Doolittle)
Biography Hilda Doolittle was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a music teacher and an astronomer. When she was fifteen, her father was appointed head of the observatory at the University of Pennsylvania, so the family moved to Philadelphia; there, Doolittle met Ezra Pound, then a student. It was Pound who gave her the pen name "H. D.," which she used for the first time in 1913 when Poetry magazine published three of her poems. With her spare, elegant lyrics; vivid phrasing; concrete, compelling imagery; and short poetic line, H. D. became one of the primary writers of the Imagism movement. Her works include The Walls Do Not Fall Tribute to the Angels The Flowering Rod (1946), and Collected Poems 1912-1944 Explorations The NAAL selections of H. D.'s work show us a poet whose range of interests and voices extends considerably beyond her usual categorization as an "Imagist." Though some of her early poems may seem generically within that mode, the expansion and sophistication of her voice and subject matter after World War I show us an individual talent leaving behind a school of poetry and going in its own direction.

H.D. attended Bryn Mawr College in Philadelphia where she first befriended Marianne Moore. She later attended the University of Pennsylvania where she met Pound and fellow poet, William Carlos Williams. Initially engaged to Pound, Doolittle was greatly influenced by her fianc© even after the two split up. Pound was also essentially responsible for H.D.'s first success, helping her see her first three poems appear in Harriet Monroe's Poetry magazine. Doolittle's father was of strong intellect serving as an astronomer for the University of Pennsylvania. H.D. was raised in the Moravian traditions of her mother, a key factor in the poet's development of poetic imagery.
H.D. traveled to Europe in 1911 for what was expected to be the summer only. However, she remained abroad for the remainder of her life.
