Jul 01 2004 - 11:52 AM NDT If you have received any spam from (randomtext)@blackplasma.net, I apologize. There isn't really anything I can do about it except complain, since some spammer(s) have decided to abuse my domain name for that crap. Just goes to show how badly email is broken.
Trackback
August 30 2004 - 19:10 PDT I'm disabling Trackback on all of the existing gushue.net entries, due to recent spam. Not something I want to do, but spam is making the internet an annoying place to be.
Oh, and I switched to Dreamhost way back in February, I just never updated this sidebar news about it :)
Server switch
January 25 2004 - 11:59 PST After my web server being down for a while, and having a stupid Linux distribution installed on it (RedHat), I decided to host it locally on my own server for now. It's a slower system on a slower connection. Which sucks, but at least I can enjoy managing it on a Debian system.
One of these days I'll get some decent webhosting for it.

Runes of the Earth by Stephen R. Donaldson
Not Just Good Vs. Evil: This Epic Fantasy Dares to Explore the Gray Areas
Like so many of the characters within it, the greatest strength of The Runes of the Earth (Book 1 of The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant) is also its greatest vulnerability. The book is a study books that seemed to describe the themes of the earlier books much better than it did the actual plot events. This is fitting in a way; the development of theme is where the Thomas Covenant books (and this volume in particular) really shine.
The Runes of the Earth explores two intertwined ideas: the consequences of choosing a morally ambiguous course in the name of preserving the good, and the superiority of any well-intentioned action at all over giving in to the futility of despair and self-condemnation. The dilemmas of each of the characters (and societies) found in this volume hammer home easy answers, because his moral is that there are none. But what you can expect is that he will show that it is possible to persevere in such a world; to find hope, and draw what sustenance we can from it. Which may be the most we can ask of any piece of literature.
