Making Characters

Stephen R. Donaldson is known for his series of books about Thomas Covenant. In this book series, the main character is set up to be a great hero, but decides to not rise to the occasion. Covenant constantly retreats from the opportunity to do the right thing, and reacts like a dysfunctional beaten dog. As frustrating as Covenant's actions are, they are nothing without the support of his enabling hosts. Covenant spends the majority of his time surrounded by sycophantic followers and supposed great heroes who cede their power to him. In short, they put him into positions where he can ruin their good work, then believe they have done something to deserve this bad treatment from the chosen one, or whatever title they give him. The most condensed clearest distillation of this behavior is the abusive husband and enabling wife. Donaldson never has the wife snap and shoot the bastard, or stab him with a chef's knife. So, what I find frustrating in entertainment today is that the people who produce what is supposed to be funny, or suspenseful, or high drama, make the mistake of having their characters repeat the same behavior multiple times without learning anything in the process. The characters are reduced to non thinking automatons. Eventually something happens that solves the conflict, but there is often no real path to the solution.

Third Chronicles! Stephen R. Donaldson. Stephen R. Donaldson is probably the second-most renowned writer of fantasy of all time. Only J.R.R. Tolkien eclipses him when it comes to critical acclaim and recognition. Yes, Robert Jordan and others have sold more books, but as far as I know there are no universities teaching courses on their work, and surely nothing to match Kent State's Donaldson Collection at that school's Department of Special Collections and Archives. Donaldson has inspired scholarly works analyzing the psychology of his main characters and the mythos they inhabit, such as Professor W.A. Senior's Chronicles Of Thomas Covenant: Variations On The Fantasy Tradition , published in 1995. W.A. Senior's book. Donaldson's imagination and storytelling abilities are amazing, whether writing fantasy ( Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Mordant's Need ), science fiction ( The Gap Series ), or short story collections ( Daughter of Regals, Reave the Just He rivals Tolkien in world creation (including linguistics and language building) and societal explanation and exposition.

An interview with Stephen R. Donaldson
Here is an interview I did with Stephen R. Donaldson. It was a pleasure working with Stephen, and I hope that it will be a pleasure for you to read it.
Are you thinking of doing something outside of the genre realm? Like a straight prose or even some poetry?
I don't plan my work in that fashion. I wait for ideas to come to me. And I don't "judge" them at all, or try to fit them into any particular genre. I try to write whatever my ideas ask me to write. (Consider my four "crime" novels, or the poetry on my web site.)
When you are writing, how important is the actual prose? Some folks seem to really focus on plot, world building or character development and seem to not prioritize prose. For others, prose is extremely important. Some come down in the middle, poor prose can kill a decent story, but good prose cannot lift up something dross. While writing, how much do you focus on the craft? Is it something that you come back and edit later?
I live for and through language. I see and feel with language. For me, "import" on every level is about language. Other writers have different (and equally valid) approaches; but for me a story fails if its prose doesn't "rise to the occasion" of its characters and plot.

Biography
Born in Cleveland in 1947, Donaldson spent his youth (from four till sixteen) living in India, where his father worked with lepers. He has a B.A. from the College of Wooster (Ohio) and an M.A. in English from Kent State University. During the Vietnam War he was a conscientious objector and spent two years doing hospital work in Akron, Ohio. His publishing debut was in 1977 with the first Thomas Covenant trilogy. He received the prestigious John W. Campbell award as the best new science fiction writer of 1978. Back To Authors Page Home Top
Writing Style
In my opinion, Donaldson is the only fantasy writer that I have read who surpasses J. R. R. Tolkien. The Thomas Covenant books are based on a rich, solidly developed mythology. The setting for these novels is not overly complex, which makes it easy to keep track of the myths that drive the people of "The Land." Donaldson writes in a formal style, but less formal than Tolkien. While I would not rate his books an easy afternoon read, they are thoroughly enjoyable. His character development is rich and deep. Although I have not read the Gap series, I understand that it is also very well written. Digger has read the Mordant's Need books and recommends them. But beware...the main characters of Donaldson's novels are anti-heroes. They are dark, flawed human beings that are difficult to love. This does not mean they aren't fascinating to read about. It just means it is difficult to develop empathy for them. Donaldson explores many dark and depressing themes (like leprosy and rape) in his novels. But if you can get past the depressing subject matter, his books are thoroughly enjoyable because they are so well crafted. His plots are well thought out and don't contain holes that require a reader to fill in the blanks.

Reave the Just and Other Tales
A review by Steve Lazarowitz
Advertisement Stephen R. Donaldson has a penchant for creating unlikeable protagonists. In his first series, The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever , he gives us a leper, brought to a strange fantasy land, who adamantly insists he doesn't have the power to save the world... throughout the entire trilogy. In The Mirror of Her Dreams , the first book of the Mordant's Need series, he gives us Terisa, a young woman brought to a strange fantasy land, who adamantly insists she doesn't have the power to save the world. I suppose she hadn't read The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever Actually the word series truly can't be applied to Mordant's Need , since the sequence contains only two books, The Mirror of Her Dreams and A Man Rides Through . However, the two books, each contain two books, so depending on how you see things, you either have a two book set or a four book set. I prefer to compromise and think of it as a trilogy contained in two volumes. I suppose you could call it a duology, if you like.

Donaldson creates one of the most complete and unique fantasy worlds especially for a first novelthat in itself keeps you reading just to learn more about the world's history and characters. Donaldson also chooses one of the most unique main characters: a middle-aged man named Thomas Covenant. On 20th-Century Earth, Covenant has leprosy, over which his wife divorces him and the local town shuns him. Covenant has lost two fingers on his right hand and lost most of his tactile sense. On a trip into town, Covenant encounters a beggar who asks him if a man transported to another world believes he is dreaming and does nothing to preserve himself is that man cowardly or courageous? Then, Covenant finds himself transported to another world ("the Land") where his nerves regenerate and he can "see" the health of the Land and its inhabitants, including plants and animals. Covenant believes that he is dreaming his experiences in the Land and never really thinks much about the message from the beggar. If Covenant truly believes that he is dreaming, then he should not really care about the consequences of his actions. And many use this argument to explain Covenant raping Lena, a 15-year-old girl at the start of Covenant's adventures in the Land. But Donaldson never has Covenant really ponder the issue of morals. Covenant does come to regret raping Lena, but somehow Covenant believes that he must not give up his leprosy survival skills or he will not be able to survive when he wakes up. So the message from the beggar plays no critical role in Covenant's actions or in the conclusion of this book's plot.
