6 comments Stepen R. Donaldson is one of those rare writers who is able to write both excellent fantasy as well as science fiction.
The first chronicles of Thomas Covenant
Most people consider Thomas Covenant, the unbeliever, a very unpleasant person. But I think that Stephen did an excellent job. Thomas, but also the other characters are very alive and human. The first chronicles consist of the following three books:
  • Lord Foul's Bane The Illearth War The Power That Preserves
Excellent fantasy story and highly recommended. A part that was left out of the "The Illearth war" has been made available as a separate story: Gilden-Fire.
The second chronicles of Thomas Covenant
If you like the first chronicles you might like the second one even more. The second chronicles consist of the following three books:
  • The Wounded Land The One Tree White Gold Wielder
The last chronicles of Thomas Covenant
There are four books projected, the first one, "The Runes of the Earth", is planned for fall 2004. The first chapter of the prologue is available on the official Stephen Donaldson website.

All of Stephen R. Donaldson's books are pretty dark... I started out reading The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever and was hooked. The 180 o difference of the two worlds, one where he was a pariah and the other where he was the savior was pretty unique. What was interesting about it is how he dealt with it (and sometimes didn't deal with it well). The Gap Series I thought was darker than the Chronicles. You could not like the main character of the book, but the plots within plots made it a great read. Not for the person who likes the good guys fighting the bad guys and winning, however...

    INTRODUCTION
Stephen Donaldson is a bestselling author of fantasy and science fiction. Donaldson's The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant: The Unbeliever is one of the most popular works of fantasy since J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. The first trilogy in the series, which details the adventures of Thomas Covenant in the magical realm known as “the Land,” took Donaldson five years to write. Although it was turned down by almost four dozen publishers, the trilogy was a huge success when it first appeared in 1977. Donaldson has also written several other science fiction and mystery novels.

Executive summary: Author of the Thomas Covenant series The author of eight New York Times bestsellers, Stephen R. Donaldson is best known as the author of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. With a level of world building sometimes compared to Tolkien's Lord of the Rings , the series casts a modern-day leprosy patient in the role of unwilling hero plunged into a parallel world. The saga also holds the distinction of having been rejected by no less than 47 publishers before finally being accepted by Lester del Rey Donaldson was born in Cleveland in 1947, but from the age of three up until age sixteen he lived in India where his father, an orthopedic surgeon and medical missionary, worked with lepers. Naturally this period had a profound effect on the young Donaldson and he relates how he developed his awareness as a storyteller as a way to relate to his strange surroundings. His creation of the Thomas Covenant character also dates to this period, inspired by a speech given by his father, James R. Donaldson, on leprosy. Donaldson returned to the U.S. in 1963 to attend college. After graduating from the College of Wooster, in Ohio, with a Bachelor's in English Literature, he served two years as a conscientious objector, doing hospital work in Akron in lieu of military service in Vietnam. In 1971 he graduated with an Master's in English from Kent State University. He entered a Ph.D program but dropped out to write, moving to New Jersey. His first novel
