CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON LEWIS CARROLL ] (1832-1898), English mathematician and author, son of the Rev. Charles Dodgson, vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire , was born in that village on the 27th of January 1832. The literary life of "Lewis Carroll" became familiar to a wide circle of readers, but the private life of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was retired and practically uneventful. After four years' schooling at Rugby , Dodgson matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford , in May 1850; and from 1852 till 1870 held a studentship there. He took a first class in the final mathematical school in 1854, and the following year was appointed mathematical lecturer at Christ Church, a post he continued to fill till 1881. In 1861 he was ordained deacon , but he never took priest's orders, possibly because of a stammer which prevented reading aloud. His earliest publications, beginning with A Syllabus of Plane Algebraical Geometry (1860) and The Formulae of Plane Trigonometry (1861), were exclusively mathematical; but late in the year 1865 he published, under the pseudonym of "Lewis Carroll,"

Lewis Carroll was actually the nom de plume of Charles Ludwidge Dodgson. Though he is most commonly known as Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland Through the Looking Glass , and the poem “Jabberwocky” , life under the name of Charles was also very noteworthy. Charles was born in Daresbury, Cheshire on January 27, 1832. He was the first of eleven children. Charles’ mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious for the time. In fact, at the time of Charles’ birth, Dr. Dodgson was the Vicar of Daresbury as well as a distinguished mathematician. As a child, Charles made games and told stories to entertain his siblings and the other children of the town. He showed, early in life, a talent for entertaining. One of his most popular forms of entertainment was the performance of The Tragedy of King John which he wrote and performed using marionettes on his homemade stage. Charles was educated by his father until he turned twelve and was sent to Mr. Tate’s school in Richmond. At first Charles was not accepted because he was new to the school and, therefore, the object of many jokes. It was not long, however, before he became known as “a boy who knew how to use his fists” in the righteous cause of protecting other boys who were weaker and more timid than he. It was here, in Richmond, where Charles began writing in earnest. His first story to be published was called

"Lewis Carroll," as he was to become known, was born on January 27 1832. His family was predominantly northern English, with Irish connections, Conservative, Anglican, High Church , upper middle class, and inclining towards the two good old upper middle class professions of the army and the Church. His great-grandfather, also Charles Dodgson, had risen through the ranks of the church to become a bishop; his grandfather, another Charles, had been an army captain, killed most romantically in action in 1803 while his two sons were hardly more than babies. public schools , and thence to Oxford. He was mathematically brilliant and won an astonishing double first which could have been, but turned out not to be, the prelude to a brilliant career. Instead he married his cousin in 1827 and retired into obscurity as a country parson. Newman and the Tractarian movement , and he did his best to instil such views in his children.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born at Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832. His parents were clergyman Charles and Frances Dodgson (nee Lutwidge). He was the oldest son, and third of 11 children. At an early age to entertain himself and his family Charles began magic tricks, marionette shows, drawings, poems, and stories written for homemade newspapers. These magazines included "Useful and Instructive Poetry" (five issues), "The Rectory Magazine" (nine issues), and "The Rectory Umbrella". Charles was eleven when his family moved to Croft in North Yorkshire and, at the age of twelve, was sent to Richmond School as a border. He was taught at Richmond by James Tate who formed a good idea of Charles' potential, especially in mathematics. On the 27th of January 1846 Charles was enrolled at Rugby and stayed for three years. When Charles was young he wrote to entertain his brothers and sisters. He didn't stop writing while he was in school. In 1860 Dodgson published his first two mathematical textbooks and, by February 1861, had completed another and started work on four more. He also contributed to the magazine "The Train". Alice's adventures began on a boating trip on the Thames going to Godstow in the summer of 1862. In August he made two more river trips with the Liddell children and continued the Alice stories.

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898) - pseudonym of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson English logician, mathematician, and novelist, best-known for his classic fantasy novels ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (1865) and its sequel THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS, AND WHAT ALICE FOUND THERE (1871). Carroll used the surrealistic settings of his fantasy world to question the commonly accepted ways of thinking. Unlike other children's books of the time, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland did not try to teach a moral message. Carroll also wrote poetry which have remained open to all explanations of meaning. "I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I don't see," said the Caterpillar.
"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied very politely, "for I can't understand it myself top begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."
    "It isn't," said the Caterpillar.

    Lewis Carroll: A Biography
by Morton N. Cohen. Alfred A. Knopf, Inc. From the publisher: "What emerges is both an extraordinary work of scholarship and a portrait that is filled with admiration for Carroll's accomplishment, delight in his playfulness and charm, and sympathy for the self-reproach and emotional turbulence that underlay his apparently placid existence. A major literary biography."
    Lewis Carroll and His Illustrators
by Morton N. Cohen (Editor), and Edward Wakeling (Editor). Cornell. From the publisher: "This new collection of the letters that Lewis Carroll wrote to the illustrators and prospective illustrators of his books affords fresh insights into Carroll's complex character, traces the history of the books that became great classics of the Victorian era, and charts the sometimes tempestuous seas of Carroll's relationships with his correspondents."
