Man is the outer lamp, woman is the inner lamp. Proverb Language is no longer linked to the knowing of things, but to human freedom. Michel Foucault
Feminist and postcolonial theories alike have begun by simply subverting images of existing hierarchies (gender/class/culture/race) in a patriarchal or colonial setting. This strategy was not very effective, because a person may belong to more than one group simultaneously, as Trinh Minh-ha suggests by proposing the "triple bind" (6) in which women of the so-called Third World Borderlands/La Frontera and Lost in Translation , attempt to articulate how their identities are constructed and contribute "to paradigmatic shifts in theorizing difference" (Yarbro-Bejarano 7). These authors approach the problem of constructing a politics of identity from a transnational perspective, recognizing and foregrounding the historical specificity of their individual experiences and asserting that in a responsibly transnational critique of constructions of identity, historical contexts cannot be dismissed. Their texts share a focus on transnationalism, an emphasis on the historical, global, and contextual specificity of experience, particularly as it relates to questions of language. They respond to Gayatri Spivak's injunction that "one needs to be vigilant against simple notions of identity which overlap with language or location" ("Poststructuralism" 201) by beginning with discussions of language and then building on those discussions to create their larger theories of identity.

Algerian writer Assia Djebar presents 'Loin de Medine' as her first political statement on the interplay of religion and politics in Algeria. Her book seeks to convince readers of the necessity of fighting religion in the political arena. She also warns of the futility of using modernity as a cure to national conflict because such concept is alien to Algerian society. 'Loin de Medine' is a tribute to Algerian women whose beliefs have been mangled by Islamic fundamentalism. Loin de Medine est une coupure - c'est une interruption, je dirais presqu'une cassure dans mon oeuvre - qui a ete ecrite d'un coup, pour participer a un debat precis: c'est une oeuvre de circonstance.(2) - Assia ...

Assia Djebar
A novelist, poet, and film director. Djebar (nee Fatima-Zohra Imalhayene) was born in 1936 in a small coastal town west of Algiers. In 1955, she became the first Algerian woman to be admitted to the prestigious Ecole Normale Superieure de Sevres. In 1956, she turned to fiction writing in support of the Algerian student strike, adopting the pen-name Assia Djebar, which she has kept ever since. She received her degree in History from the Sorbonne at the age of 26. In 1978, she directed La nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua, which won the Grand Prix de la Critique Internationale at the Venice Film Festival. Herstory and Algeria’s Zina: A Dual-Reading of Assia Djebar’s: Women of Algiers in their Apartment, by Alexandra Nargiz J©r´me
In her novel Women of Algiers in their Apartment, Assia Djebar takes the first steps towards reconciling the effects of the postcolonial world with the history of women’s participation in the struggle for Algerian independence. The novel’s title, which refers to the painting Women of Algiers in their Apartment by Eugene Delacroix, is Djebar’s nod to the pre-colonial, the colonial, and the postcolonial containment of women to various degrees within Algerian society. As such, this article approaches Women of Algiers in their Apartment in a two-pronged analysis: the first is an analysis of the metahistorical attributes of the novel and the standard uses of literary criticism. The second is a reading of Djebar’s allegorical use of the nation as woman and the reclaiming of the nation by contemporary Islamist groups. Thus the book may be read in two manners: as a work of the metahistorical imagination and as an allegorical critique/epitaph of contemporary, Islamized Algeria. The conclusion remains the same: Women of Algiers in their Apartment refers to the compartmentalization of women and their neo-harems.

d’incessants departs repères dans le sable ancestral Ecrire est une route à ouvrir… - Assia Djebar, Ces voix qui m’assiègent In a dramatic parable near the end of L’amour, la fantasia , Algerian author Assia Djebar evokes a scene in French orientalist painter and author Eugène Fromentin’s Un été dans le Sahara (1856) that describes his visit to the besieged Algerian city of Laghoaut in 1853. Fromentin happens upon the severed hand of a woman’s corpse, one of the many casualties of violent incursions by the French. More than a century later, Djebar writes that she has taken up this “main de mutilation et du souvenir” in order to write “une préparation à une autobiographie”(LA 255, Mortimer 203). A metonym of an intertext, the hand that Djebar uses to write her story along with the history of her country is an emblematic image that offers a window onto the complex cultural and literary functions of intertextuality in the postcolonial context. What does it mean for Djebar to cite a text of the former colonizer? Is this a cultural betrayal, or is it rather a gesture of recuperation and transformation? More importantly for Djebar, does cultural betrayal result in writing that is “une route à ouvrir?”
