Assia Djebar (1936- ) - pseudonym of Fatima-Zohra Imalayen Algerian novelist, translator, and filmmaker, one of North-Africa's best-known and most widely acclaimed writers. Djebar has also published poetry, plays, and short stories, and has produced two films. In her books Djebar has explored the struggle for social emancipation and the Muslim woman's world in its complexities. Her strong feminist stance has earned her much praise. Several of her works deal with the impact of the war on women's mind. "Just so I could have worries that never change whether it's peace or wartime, so I could wake up in the middle of the night and question myself on what it is that sleeps in the depths of the heart of the man sharing my bed... Just so I could give birth and weep, for life never comes unaccompanied to a woman, death is always right behind, furtive, quick, and smiling at the mothers..." (from 'There Is No Exile' in Women in Their Apartments Algerian White (1995) to the aftermath of the struggle and the deaths of her three friends.

L'amour, la fantasia, L'ombre sultane, Vaste est la prison and Le blanc de l'Algérie (although the latter seems to mark where historical events interrupt the course of fiction), at once show Djebar's commitment to the emergence of collective female empowerment in her country, and the resonances in her writing of a broader cultural base. The second and third chapters offer an original approach to two aspects evident throughout Djebar's tetralogy which also describe a problem typical of the postcolonial feminist novel, that is, oppression of women and discursive strategies that conceptualize free female agency. Claustration and veiling are examined from the standpoint of various social sciences as the foils of a patriarchal tradition that decolonization has not changed. Vagabondage is seen at once as liberating to Djebar's protagonists and as disruptive of traditional literary forms, providing a perception of Algerian women as a powerful and as yet untapped source of transformation. The day that Assia Djebar's father, a teacher in the French colonial educational system, first escorted his daughter to school, he set her on a bilingual and bicultural journey that resulted in her development as an artist and an intellectual. Djebar recalls the scene in L'amour, la fantasia to express his uneasy alliance with the French language and culture. Yet Djebar's experience, in contrast to theirs, is distinctly gendered. She came to believe that the process of Western acculturation, resulting in her mastery of the colonizer's language and access to public space, excluded her from most, if not all, aspects of traditional woman's world. L'amour, la fantasia

L'amour, la fantasia
On the occasion of the publication of L'amour, la fantasia (1985), the first translation in Slovene of a novel by Assia Djebar, the publishing house Mladinska knjiga and City of Women present the work of the Algerian author, film-director and academic. Besides a presentation of the book we will screen her film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (1978) at Slovenska kinoteka.
Assia Djebar
The film La Nouba, des femmes du Mont Chenoua (winner of the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival, 1978) takes its title and structure from the "Nouba", a traditional song of five movements. The film mingles narrative and documentary styles to document the creation of women's personal and cultural histories. Returning to her native region 15 years after the end of the Algerian war, Lila is obsessed by memories of the war for independence that defined her childhood. In dialogue with other Algerian women, she reflects on the differences between her life and theirs. In lyrical footage she contemplates the power of grandmothers who pass down traditions of anti-colonial resistance to their heirs. Reading the history of her country as written in the stories of women's lives, Assia Djebar's La Nouba des Femmes du Mont-Chenoua is an engrossing portrait of speech and silence, memory and creation, and a tradition where the past and present coexist.

      Biography/Criticism
Assia Djebar is one of Algeria’s most beloved writers and has long been hailed as “one of the most important figures in North African literature.” In a career that spans over half a century, Djebar has used her words in the form of poetry, plays, novels, and short stories to convey her experiences growing up in a war-torn country and living as a woman in a world that can at times be unkind. Djebar has also produced two films with the goal of extending her voice to those who cannot read. In Nada Elia’s Trances, Dances and Vociferations , Djebar’s works are compared to the work of such respected authors as Toni Morrison, Michelle Cliff, and Paule Marshall; all are authors who share a feminist, African or Afro-diasporic view of the world. Assia Djebar was born Fatima-Zohra Imalayen on August 4,1936, to Tahar Imalhay¨ne and Bahia Sahraoui. She was raised in the small seaport town of Cherchell, in the Province of A¯n Defla on the coast of Algeria. Djebar’s father was an educator, teaching the French language at Mouza¯aville dans la Mitidja, a primary school that she attended. Later, Djebar would attend a Koranic private school where she was one of only two girls, an experience instilling in her a sense of deep religious faith as well as an unusual level of assertiveness. She then went on to study at Coll¨ge de Blida (high school) in Algeria’s nearby capital city of Algiers, where she was the only Muslim in her class, an experience that enhanced her strength and unshakeable faith
