AHA! MOMENT
Chitra Divakaruni: "But You're A Girl!"
If a 13th-century Indian woman could tear off her veil, command men and ride elephants into battle, then so could 10-year-old Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni.
But my brother was older, and he still did it, I pointed out, flabbergasted by this failure in maternal logic.
"That's different," my mother said, her eyes sad but firm. "You're a girl."
The caption below the picture said Sultana Raziyya. The Sultana was the first woman to sit on the throne of Delhi. (Later I would discover that she was the only woman to do so until Indira Gandhi came to power in the 20th century.) In 1236 she was nominated by her father, Iltutmish, to succeed him and overcame her weak brothers to rule the volatile kingdom for a brief time.
Raziyya shocked her Muslim court by promptly dispensing with her veil and presiding over them barefaced. She passed laws on racial and religious tolerance (issues they obviously didn't care for) and levied taxes to build schools and wells. She could recite the Koran but preferred to write poetry, and she made friends with a number of writers and artists.
The aghast noblemen were forced to revolt against Raziyya. She set her troops against them, but was captured and thrown into prison. But Raziyya didn't give up so easily. She talked her jailer, one of the nobles who was formerly part of the opposition, into marrying her and helping her escape. She died heroically while leading one last, superbly scandalous charge from atop a huge elephant shortly afterward in 1240.

I Read A Short Story Today
Sunday, January 22, 2006
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, "The Lives of Strangers"
An American joins a pilgrimage in India, and finds herself drawn to an old, possibly cursed woman.
(from The O. Henry Prize Stories 2002, on extended loan from the Lori Hill Library)
Leela studies the kaleidoscope of emotions flitting across the women’s faces. Excitement, pity, cheerful outrage. Can it be true, that part about an unlucky star? In America she would have dealt with such superstition with fluent, dismissive ease, but India is complicated. Like entering a murky, primal lake, in India she has to watch her step.
One thing this story does well (and there are many things) is juxtapose a common American mindset with an Indian one, and then let you guess which side is right. But the route is indirect, the comparison non-confrontational. The language is sometimes sharp and sometimes elaborate, at all the right times. And the names — places, people, foods — put you in a foreign place without making you feel like any more of a tourist than Leela. There are parts to make you worried, sad, angry and elated.
You should read it.

He is kind to everybody and works at a restaurant as a waiter. When an old man comes and orders something but does not have any money to pay for it and gets kicked out of the restaurant, Anand gives the man his lunch, bread and tea. The man thanks him kindly, and said that something good will fall upon him. The man cures his sister Meera, who couldn't speak. The man, Abadhyatta, asks Anand if he wants to come on a journey with him to the Silver Valley to return something special to the "Healers". Anand says yes, and when his mother finds out that Meera is cured, she lets him go. Abadhyatta said that he would meet Anand on the train station by dawn, and if he wasn't there, then Anand couldn't follow along.
Before he can get into the Silver Valley, he has to answer a question: "Which of these three virtues is the most important: honesy, loyalty, or compassion?" Anand has an hour to think about it and answers with that he chose none of them because they all are connected and he thinks cannot fully exist without another. The answer is correct, and Anand is allowed into the city. The Healers heal Abadhyatta and Nisha, and Anand is given a choice of living forever in the Silver Valley and putting a spell on his family so that they won't remember him, or returning to his mother, father, and Meera back at home."

Arranged Marriage by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
"He hadn't waited for an answer.
Wind slams a door somewhere, making you jump. It's raining outside, the first time in years. Big swollen drops, then thick silbes sheets of it. You walk out to the balcony. The rain runs down your cheecks, the tears you couldn't shed. The nasturtiums, washed clean, are glowingr ed. Smell of wet earth. You take a deep breath, decide to go for a long walk.
As you walk you try to figure out what to do. (And maybe the meaning of what you ahve done.) The pills are there, of course. You pricture it: the empty bottles by the bed, your body fallen across it, a hand flung over the side. The note left behind. Will he press repentant kisses on your pale palm? Will she fly across the ocean to wash your stiff eyelids with her tears?
Or-what? what? Surely there's another choice. But you can't find the words to give it shape. When you look down the empty street, the bright leaves of the newly-washed maples hurt your eyes.

California Uncovered: Stories for the 21st Century

By Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni California Uncovered Putting together this anthology was a challenging task, especially because we were confronted by an embarrassment of riches. Lack of space forced us to leave out many fine pieces we wanted to include. I am sure some of our readers will regret these omissions. But then, as Dana Gioia astutely states in his introduction to California Poetry California Uncovered Travels with Charley As its subtitle indicates, California Uncovered looks into the future, into the California that is to come. But any meaningful vision of the future depends on an understanding of the past and the present, and so the book presents many different experiences from different times. From white settlers coming over the Sierra Nevada in the 1840s to the building of the first suburb with a mall, outside of Los Angeles, in the 1940s, to Afghanis trying vainly to feel at home in Fremont in the 2000s, California Uncovered traces an ongoing California experience. The Vine of Desire picks up where Divakaruni's bestselling novel, Sister of My Heart top of the page Anju tells her unborn son, Prem, stories of who she "used to be before the accident of America happened to [her]" [p. 12]. What does she mean by "the accident of America?" How are Sudha's and Anju's assimilation into American culture affected by the different circumstances that lead them there in the first place? Why does Sudha choose to return to India, while for Anju the idea of returning to India does not even seem to cross her mind? How is the process of assimilation different for Anju, Sunil, Lalit, Trideep, and Sudha? Why are some more successful than others? Do the characters identify as "Americans" or as "Indian-Americans?" What do incidents such as Sunil's attacking the valet at the party for making derogatory comments about Indians [p. 138] and Anju's sensitivity about the portrayal of Indians in the movies her schoolmates attend [pp. 213–4] demonstrate about their comfort with their place in America? How do Sunil, Anju, and Sudha each interpret the O. J. Simpson trial in light of the events taking place in their personal lives? How might Anju or Sunil answer Sudha's question: "What was the point of filling our head with their troubles?" [p. 111] How might Sudha answer her own question by the end of the novel?

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni’s Arranged Marriage is a collection of short stories that explore the cross-cultural experiences of womanhood through a feminist perspective. At once pessimistic and filled with hope, Divakaruni creates contradictory as well as connected fictional worlds through the nine short stories that make up this collection. Though the characters vary, the themes of the short stories are essentially the same—exploration of the nature of arranged marriages as well as the experiences of affirmation and rebellion against social traditions. “The Ultrasound,” Affair, and “Meeting Mrinal” are the three short stories with which Arranged Marriage concludes. In their exploration of experience and insight, as well as narrative technique, these stories surpass the six stories with which the collection begins. However, the earlier stories also contain unforgettable scenes, as in “Silver Pavements, Golden Roofs” when a student, arriving in the city of Chicago, is brought face-to-face with the horrifying reality of its mean streets; or of the child in “Bats” who is vaguely aware of his mother’s desperate flight from their home in Calcutta to the warmth and comfort of his uncle’s home; or of a young Indian bride’s fairy-tale vision of America shattered with the murder of her husband who manages a 7-Eleven store.
