Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Biography C hitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. Her work is widely known, as she has been published in over 50 magazines, and her writing has been included in over 30 anthologies. Major Themes M uch of Divakaruni's work is partially autobiographical. Not only are most of her stories set in the Bay Area of California, but she also deals with the immigrant experience, which is an important theme in today's world, where the immigrant's voice is rarely heard. Her book Arranged Marriage is a collection of short stories, all about women from India caught between two worlds. In The Mistress of Spices Arranged Marriage , a work that includes stories about the abuse and courage of immigrant women. Arranged Marriage and her novel, The Mistress of Spices, are both highly acclaimed works by Divakaruni. In Arranged Marriage The Mistress of Spices is unique in that it is written with a blend of prose and poetry. The book has a very mystical quality to it, and, as Divakaruni puts it, "I wrote in a spirit of play, collapsing the divisions between the realistic world of twentieth century America and the timeless one of myth and magic in my attempt to create a modern fable" ("Dissolving" 2). The novel follows Tilo, a magical figure who runs a grocery store and uses spices to help the customers overcome difficulties. In the process, she develops dilemmas of her own when she falls in love with a non-Indian. This creates great conflicts, as she has to choose whether to serve her people or to follow the path leading to her own happiness. Tilo has to decide which parts of her heritage she will keep and which parts she will chose to abandon. The novel is currently being made into a movie.

I am the mistress of spices. I can work the others too. Mineral, metal, earth and sand and stone. The gems with their cold clear light. The liquids that burn their hues into your eyes till you see nothing else. I learned them all on the island. But the spices are my love. I know their origins, and what their colors signify, and their smells. I can call each by the true-name it was given at first, when earth split like skin and offered it up to the sky. Their heat runs in my blood. From amachur to zafran, they bow to my command. At a whisper they bow to my command. At a whisper they yield up to me their hidden properties, their magical powers.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni was born in 1957 in Calcutta, India. One of her first memories is that of her grandfather telling her the stories from Ramayan and Mahabharat, ancient Indian epics. She quickly noticed that "interestingly, unlike the male heroes, the main relationships [the] women had were with the opposite sex-with their husbands, sons, lovers, or opponents. They never had any important women friends." This topic would eventually become very important to Divakaruni's writing. Divakaruni was raised as and still is a devout Hindu. She attended a convent school in India run by Irish nuns during her childhood. She went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Calcutta.

PAGES: 259, PRICE: Rs 225 A s the second generation of the post-1965 Indian immigrants come of age in America, we are beginning to see a wealth of literature as well as critical essays in which they chronicle and analyse their experiences. Readers might recall anthologies of prose and poetry such as Living in America, edited by Roshni Rustomji Kerns, and Contours of the Heart (which won an American Book Award), edited by Rajini Srikanth and Sunaina Maira. Then there are the more scholastic, research-oriented post-colonial texts such as An Immigrant Success Story: East Indians in America by Arthur and Usha Helweg and Cultural Variables in Asian Indian Families by Uma Segal. Emerging Voices, edited by Sangeeta Gupta, falls somewhere between the two categories. It contains academic articles and carefully documented case studies in addition to impassioned autobiographical accounts by women who have lived through repressive or abusive situations.

A reimagining of the world-famous Indian epic, the Mahabharat—told from the point of view of the wife of an amazing woman.
Relevant to today’s war-torn world, The Palace of Illusions takes us back to a time that is half history, half myth, and wholly magical. Narrated by Panchaali, the wife of the legendary Pandavas brothers in the Mahabharat, the novel gives us a new interpretation of this ancient tale.
The novel traces the princess Panchaali's life, beginning with her birth in fire and following her spirited balancing act as a woman with five husbands who have been cheated out of their father’s kingdom. Panchaali is swept into their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war involving all the important kings of India. Meanwhile, we never lose sight of her strategic duels with her mother-in-law, her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna, or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husband’s most dangerous enemy. Panchaali is a fiery female redefining for us a world of warriors, gods, and the ever-manipulating hands of fate.

"Sister of My Heart"
(Reviewed by Karma Sawka APR 13, 2002) "The Bidhata Purush is tall and has a long, spun-silk beard like the astrologer my mother visits each month to find out what the planets have in store for her. He is dressed in a robe made of the finest white cotton, his fingers drip light, and his feet do not touch the ground as he glides toward us. When he bends over our cradle, his face is so blinding-bright I cannot tell his expression. With the first finger of his right hand he marks our foreheads. It is a tingly feeling, as when Pishi rubs stiger-balm on our temples. I think I know what he writes for Anju. You will be brave and clever, you will fight injustice, you will not give in. You will marry a fine man and travel the world and have many sons. You will be happy.

REFERENCES COLUMNS General Fiction Fantasy News 08-26-04 This is a novel to haunt your dreams. Some novels catch at your subconscious and leave you with a lingering awareness of the mysteries of life, and there is no doubt in my mind that this is one of them. This is Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's fourth novel, following bestsellers such as The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, as well as short fiction and poetry. It is a novel where the narrative alternates between the understood and the mystical. In fact it seems to me that Divakaruni is a secret purveyor of magic realism, where the things we don't understand (such as dreams) can be at least partially explained and made sense of through a kind of magic. The second half of the novel is where reality, dreams and nightmares begin to intertwine and blur. After her mother's death, Rakhi finds her dream journal, which she reads with the aid of her father to translate the Bengali words in an attempt to interpret and understand her mother's life, and thus make sense of her death. Rakhi also finds herself struggling with her business, relationships, and the devastating events of September 11, 2001. The novel is also divided between India and the US, although set entirely in America. To Rakhi, as no doubt to many US-born Indians, India represents the mystical and the longed for - quite literally a land of dreams, and one that she is on a quest to understand, through the cryptic medium of her mother's dream journal. As she and her friends and family try to come to terms with their lives and origins, their peace of mind is totally shattered by events in the world around them. India becomes little more than a myth in the shocked aftermath of the terrorist attacks on the world they know and love, and yet it is also the key to their past and present lives.

Interview with Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
An interview with Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni where we learn how she balances writing and family, her thoughts on Awards in general and Kiran Desai in particular. 'Awards are beyond my control' But writing isn't. Ask The Mistress of Spices on ways to blend dreams and desires with poetry and storyteller magic. In a 'stir'ring conversation, author Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni holds forth on Kiran Desai — and all things immigrant. What do you feel about Kiran Desai and her works?
I like Kiran's works and am delighted for her. Even with her first novel, Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard, I clearly saw her talent and wrote a comment for her book jacket. She has grown in the years since then and has now produced a far more mature book. When do we see your name in the same list too?
The Booker list is not open to an American citizen like myself. What do awards mean to you?
They are beyond my control. Most of your novels revolve around the immigrant Indian, why have you chosen them?
