Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni
Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. She has been published in over 50 magazines, including The Atlantic Monthly and The New Yorker , and her writing has been included in over 50 anthologies. Her books have been translated into 16 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian and Japanese. Two of her books have been made into movies. Her new novel, The Palace of Illusions , will be published by Doubleday in February 2008. Buy a copy from an independent bookseller in the US. Relevant to today’s war-torn world, The Palace of Illusions takes us back to the time of the Indian epic The Mahabharat—a time that is half-history, half-myth, and wholly magical. Through her narrator Panchaali, the wife of the legendary five Pandava brothers, Divakaruni gives us a rare feminist interpretation of an epic story. The novel traces Panchaali’s life, beginning with her magical birth in fire as the daughter of a king before following her spirited balancing act as a woman with five husbands who have been cheated out of their father’s kingdom. Panchaali is swept into their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at the brothers’ sides through years of exile and a terrible civil war. Meanwhile, we never lose sight of her stratagems to take over control of her household from her mother-in-law, her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna, or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husband’s most dangerous enemy. Panchaali is a fiery female voice in a world of warriors, gods, and the ever-manipulating hands of fate.

by Karthik Ramaswamy WaterBridge Review: In your latest book, Queen of Dreams , your protagonist Rakhi, a young single mother, faces several painful discoveries about her own past history balanced against the horrible events that occurred on 9/11. Would you consider it your most political novel to date? And did writing it help you to sort out your own feelings about what happened? Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni: Yes, in some ways it's my most political novel, dealing most directly with an event of national importance and its aftermath. Yes, it helped me express the terrible pain I felt after 9/11 because, in addition to suffering the effects of this national tragedy, my community (and other communities like mine that “looked like terrorists”) had to suffer from hate crimes that erupted in so many parts of America. WBR: There is almost always a mystical dimension to your work. Does it have any reflection on your own life? Are you a mistress of spices? CD: I'm not a mistress of spices … more like a handmaiden of words! But I've always been interested in alternate realities and believe that we live in a world where many realities are nestled one within the other—if only we have the sensitivity to experience them.

Her books include four volumes of poetry, a collection of short fiction, and the novel The Mistress of Spices, which will soon be made into a film. She is President of Maitri, a South Asian women's helpline. Read an interview with Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni published in Weber Studies The sky is streaked with grey and a strange bleeding pink I've never seen before. Or perhaps the intense cold is distorting my perceptions. I huddle in a coat that is too large for me, borrowed from my younger brother Ashu for this boat trip, trying to remember how it feels to be warm. The scratchy wool smells of musk, as new to me as the hard adult line of my brother's jaw, dark against the blinding snowbanks of the far shore. I am not quite sure why we are on this ferry, why we are attempting to cross this frozen lake whose name I cannot remember although Ashu said it just a few minutes ago. It is March in Vermont, the last day of my unhappy visit, and I still haven't done what I came here to do. I haven't been able to tell Ashu what's happening to our mother in India, haven't been able to beg him to go to her before it's too late. The River Queen's rusty deck shudders under my feet as the boat makes its slow uneven way across the lake. I can hear the crunch of ice being crushed somewhere below. I imagine enormous metal jaws closing in underwater dark on the huge, slippery blocks, grinding down till they crack, spraying ice-needles in every direction. Perhaps there are fish down there, their slight silver bodies mangled by the steel teeth, the water slowly turning the same pink as the sky. Nonsense! The fish know quite well how to take care of themselves, my brother would say if he knew what I was thinking. Or would he? I'm not sure any more. It's been a long time since we shared our fantasies, our fears.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Divakaruni grew up in India, earned a Ph.D. in English at UC Berkeley, and is currently juggling a professorship at Foothill College, motherhood, and her book tour. I'm not much of a poetry reader and usually find it hard to read poetry unless I find it gripping, evocative, haunting, and calling out to me in personal way. Vikram Chandra I caught Chandra during his Seattle book tour last year. He was swallowed up by a large black jacket with its sleeves rolled up, and he spoke quietly and with none of the air of the polished storyreader. A few of us took him out to dinner that evening. Seattle lay dark that night, and spaghetti in strange cities always hints at adventure. Chandra was the most animated telling uproarious traveling stories of Mexico. He's a devoted Bombayite (is there any other kind?) and an aspiring film writer. Chandra is very soft-spoken. It took him five years to finish the book, and I could imagine him slaving away at the screen over many a late night, putting aside his programming and his film projects to work on his manuscript. Oh yes, this gifted writer
