63. Polly Moller's Web Site: Discography: Diogenes
The lifecataclysm spurred her to change the title of her upcoming third album from Tacit Blue (the name of the lead-off track) to diogenes.
http://www.silverwheel.com/diogenes_new.html
Lots of lyrics came pouring out of Polly in 2001, relating to some significant traumas in her life. The life-cataclysm spurred her to change the title of her upcoming third album from "Tacit Blue" (the name of the lead-off track) to Diogenes.
(You may recall that Diogenes, the Greek Cynical philosopher, was said to travel the land by day and night holding a lit lantern, in search of an honest man. According to the legend he never found one.) In September of 2001, Polly and engineer Jeff Davis of Lucky Dog Studio began work on this album...and Polly experienced the September 11th tragedy while rather far from home! Pictures taken of her on that day, during sessions (the only appropriate thing to do was work, it seemed) show she was a little bit preoccupied. In July of 2002, Polly completed Diogenes, finalizing the ten tracks recorded in September of 2001 and recording two new ones from scratch. She has fond memories of Lucky Dog Studio (on whose floor she slept on both visits) and the local atmosphere in Eugene, Oregon. One night after a long day of recording, a dramatic thunderstorm hit Eugene. A house half a block from the studio was actually struck by lightning! Polly doesn't get to see very many things like that in the San Francisco Bay Area.

All remaining mistakes are my own. The Tao of Diogenes The Severus Snape of his memory was a formidable man, a man to whom black was a lifestyle: a persona, an ideal, a principle. He was bitter, vindictive, and in his malice found fulfillment. Severus Snape sneered and scowled at the world on his best day and could sear a hole through your heart with one look on his worst. The only time Severus Snape ever smiled was when he was inflicting pain, promising misery, or torturing whomever had the misfortune to cross his path. In short, he was not a nice man.

Diogenes The Dog
The Cynic from Sinope who Lived in a Tub... For all we do here at this site to combat hunger and poverty and raise awareness of the present-day hunger and poverty epidemics, this site wouldn't be complete without a page dedicated to my number one hero Diogenes (412 BC - 323 BC), the wise social critic who gave up possessions and chose to live in poverty.
-Scott Hughes,
A Socrates Gone Mad
The people of ancient Greece knew the philosopher Diogenes by many nick names. Plato called Diogenes "a Socrates gone mad". Most often the Greeks called Diogenes "the dog". The Greek word for dog was "cynic". In fact, Diogenes teacher Antisthenes - pupil of Socrates - founded the Greek school of cynicism, and Diogenes was and is the most notorious cynic. Now you know the etymology of the word cynic. The story of how Diogenes and Antisthenes came together is an interesting one. Attracted by the ascetic teaching of Antisthenes, Diogenes came to be his student. Antisthenes struck Diogenes with his staff when Diogenes first came to the doors of the cynic school, but Diogenes refused to leave and said "Strike me, Antisthenes, but you will never find a stick sufficiently hard to remove me from your presence, while you speak anything worth hearing." Then, Diogenes became a student of Antisthenes. Diogenes became the pupil of Antisthenes and rapidly surpassed his master both in reputation and in the austerity of his life. Unlike the other citizens of Athens, Diogenes avoided earthly pleasures. His attitude was grounded in his great disdain for what he perceived as the folly, vanity, pretence, self-deception, social climbing, and artificiality of much human conduct.
