1.1. A short introduction
Diogenes is a content management system (CMS) that allows you to create and administer multiple websites on a single server via a web interface and/or WebDAV. Each website, referred to as a barrel, is self-contained and can be administered by a different community. Diogenes was developed by Jeremy Lainé . Wondering what Diogenes looks like in action? Look no further than the current page, it is hosted using Diogenes! Below you will find other examples of Diogenes sites.

Parrhesiasts - Diogenes
The Cynic Philosophers and their techniques
[excerpt from the seminar given by Foucault in 1983
This brings us to Cynic parrhesia. The main types of parrhesiastic practice utilized by the Cynics were. (1) critical preaching; (2) scandalous behavior; and (3) what I shall call the "Provocative dialogue." Critical Preaching : Preaching is still one of the main forms of truth-telling practiced in our society, and it involves the idea that the truth must be told and taught not only to the best members of the society, or to an exclusive group, but to everyone. Scandalous Behavior : Cynic parrhesia also had recourse to scandalous behavior or attitudes which called into question collective habits, opinions, standards of decency, institutional rules, and so on. Several procedures were used. One of them was the inversion of roles, as can be seen from Dio Chrysostom's Fourth Discourse where the famous encounter between Diogenes and Alexander is depicted. This encounter, which was often referred to by the Cynics, does not take place in the privacy of Alexander's court but in the street, in the open. The king stands up while Diogenes sits back in his barrel. Diogenes orders Alexander to step out of his light so that he can bask in the sun. Ordering Alexander to step aside so that the sun' s light can reach Diogenes is an affirmation of the direct and natural relation the philosopher has to the sun in contrast to the mythical genealogy whereby the king, as descended from a god, was supposed to personify the sun.

http://www.njcdlp.org/DIOGENES.html
  • Diogenes was a Greek philosopher, reportedly born sometime between 412 to 460 BC. His
"uncompromising zeal for exposing vice and stirring men to reform" makes him a most
appropriate namesake for the featured magazine of NJCDLP.
  • "Tradition ascribes to (Diogenes) the famous search for an honest man conducted in broad
daylight with a lighted lantern." DIOGENES the magazine, approaches the mission from a slightly
different perspective. It strives to be like a "lighted lantern", revealing what other media outlets
conceal and that is the government mismanagement and abuses undermining America as
described by government insiders and watchdogs.
The light of Diogenes is to shine again!
NJCDLP halted publication of its magazine DIOGENES, primarily due to lagging subscriptions.
Yet government reform activists continue to need a high-quality, national media outlet, always receptive to their messages; affordable; and easily accessed by Americans who are reasonably conscientious, but unlikely to closely monitor social/political events through on-line communications.

50. Notes On Diogenes Laertius
A criticism of this author s reliability, based on his Life of Socrates.
http://www.uvm.edu/~jbailly/courses/Socrates/Notes/diogenes.html
Notes on Diogenes Laertius' life of Socrates
Diogenes Laertius is the author of the only work to survive from antiquity which describes the history of philosophy from its inception to the beginnings of the Common Era, called The Lives of the Philosophers . The latest philosopher he names is a student of Sextus Empiricus, which puts him in the middle of the 3rd century of the Common Era. He collected a hodge-podge of material excerpted from other sources, which happens to have survived, unlike many other authors' works. An example of argument using Diogenes Laertius
  • On P. 334, Diogenes Laertius says that Socrates offered 25 drachmae as a fine at his trial, and then suggested free meals at the Prytaneum.
  • He does not say where he got that information from, but at the beginning of the same paragraph, he says he derives his information from Justus of Tiberias.
  • Thus it is not certain, but it is likely that Justus of Tiberias is the one who reports that Socrates proposed a 25 drachmae fine.
  • On P. 334, Diogenes Laertius also says that Eubulides says that the fine Socrates offered was 100 drachmae.
  • We know that Diogenes had read Plato's Apology
  • The Apology says that Socrates first suggested free meals, then a 1 mina fine.

Brief Encounter - A Great Old Movie
I like old, classic movies. The stars of those days seem bigger in retrospect and the movies themselves larger than life. Such a movie is one that came out here in the U.S.A. in 1946, but which had been released a year earlier in Great Britain. The movie is Brief Encounter and it starred the great Trevor Howard and Celia Fleming. It is the story of a couple who meet in a railway station in England and the relationship that ensues. It has all the elements of a classic love story. Celia Fleming, for your information, was the sister-in-law of Ian Fleming who created James bond. Rachel over at Tinkerty Tonk has a post of Brief Encounter.

Born in Sinope (modern Sinop, Turkey), he studied in Athens , where he was a disciple of the philosopher Antisthenes , who taught that social conventions should be disregarded and pleasure shunned. Diogenes plunged into a life of austerity and self-mortification. He wore coarse clothing, ate plain food, and slept on the bare ground, in the open streets, or under porticoes. His eccentric life did not, however, lose him the respect of the Athenians, who admired his contempt of comfort. Practical good was the chief aim of Diogenes's philosophy, and he did not conceal his disdain for literature and the fine arts. He laughed at men of letters for reading of the sufferings of Odysseus while neglecting their own, and at orators who studied how to enforce truth but not how to practice it. On a voyage to Aegina he was seized by pirates and carried to Crete, where he was sold as a slave. When asked what business he was proficient in, he answered, “in commanding”. He was purchased by a certain Xeniades of Corinth, who recognized his worth, set him free, and made him tutor to his children.

A Republic of geometric perfection, immortal mind children, and the rational discourse of dialectics. Anything that fails to de-link from the world will be attacked as an immoral act against Truth, Beauty, and The Law. Anything that smells of the body, of piss, of shit, of farts, of flesh fucking flesh for no reason other than pleasure will have no place in this Republic. In the Virtual Republic there will be no music, no theater, no painting, all email from Dionysus will be filtered out from the listserves. Who and what can piss against this hegemonic code?
