Most of his novels are adventures on other planets, several of them grouped into a loosely constructed human history known as the " Childe Cycle ", one subset of which included his most popular work, the " Dorsai " sequence. Dickson began appearing in book form during the , predominantly light adventure stories, but it was with Dorsai , originally published in book form as The Genetic General ) that he began to attract a larger audience. Humanity has spread to the stars and split into four separate cultures one of which, the Dorsai, specializes in training its people as mercenaries. Politics and differing philosophies collide as some believe that diversity is preferable while others contend that a reconciliation among the fragmented cultures is essential. Two short stories set against that background won Hugos Soldier Ask Not ) and " Lost Dorsai ), both of which were later expanded into full length novels. Another title in that series

Gordon R. Dickson (1923-2001)
(Tributes follow this notice) I'm deeply saddened to report the death of Gordon R. Dickson early this morning. He was a prolific author with more than 80 books to his credit, including several published in just the past year. I remember well taking his writing home with me from the library in the late 1950s, and savoring it. His short fiction won three Hugo awards ("Soldier, Ask Not," 1965; "Last Dorsai," novella, 1981; "The Cloak and the Staff," novelette, 1981), and one Nebula ("Call Him Lord," novelette, 1966). He edited SFWA's Nebula Awards #12 volume (1978), and served as President of SFWA from 1969 to 1971. It was in this capacity Gordy in his role as former SFWA President that I came to know him as a highly intelligent, caring, sensitive person in the last few years. We never met, but our phone conversations about SFWA were always a source of strength and perspective. We also talked about writing he was the kind of author who was always running some plot complexity through his head, which he loved to talk about. A true delight was getting an unexpected call from him late in the evening. Our last conversation was just last week Gordy, very ill, made a point of returning my call to cast his vote in our Grand Master selection. He cared that much for our genre and our organization.

Welcome to the online home of the Gordon Dickson Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund is being established for three purposes:
    • To honor Gordy Dickson, local fan and science fiction and fantasy pro writer who died in 2001. To collect money to send potential new writers to the Clarion Workshop for SF and fantasy writers or some other workshop. Gordy always encouraged new writers. To promote accord in Twin Cities fandom by having a project that various fan clubs and individual fans can work on together.
To that end representatives from the general interest SF fan clubs Minn-Stf FenSF MISFITS , SF Minnesota, putting on Minicon MarsCon CONvergence , and Diversicon , respectively, the food oriented Minnesota Munchie Movement ( CONsume/Relaxacon ), plus individual fans, and the con chair of Valleycon in Fargo, ND, met at MarsCon in March, 2002 to discuss how to launch this fund. Special interest fan clubs and individual fans are invited and encouraged to participate. We intend to meet every year at MarsCon for a general meeting. We will have our meeting as part of the Regional Fandom Roundtable program item on Saturday. Check your program guide for time and location.

The Man From Earth by Gordon R. Dickson
Today I'll be reviewing The Man from Earth by the late Gordon R. Dickson, best known for the Childe Cycle (AKA the "Dorsai" series.) This is a collection of 10 short stories by Gordon R. Dickson, with publication dates ranging from 1952 to 1969, mostly dealing with interaction between humans and aliens, usually in situations of conflict. My favorite stories from the collection are: "Call Him Lord"- On a distant future Earth that has been preserved in an ancient condition by a starfaring human empire, the son of humanity's emperor is put to an ancient test. I liked the way the story is set up- Dickson takes an Earth much like ours, and yet makes it strange and alien. He also does a good job of inspiring emotional sympathy for a character that only appears in the last page, which isn't always easy to do, especially when it's not a viewpoint character. "Ancient, My Enemy"- A group of prospectors and a young anthropology student are exploring in lethally hot territory occupied by primitive aliens when the youngest of the prospectors finds himself the target of a bizarre alien rite of battle. But the savage aliens aren't the only brutes out in the desert, and violence from without isn't the only enemy the young prospector faces.
