James (Lafayette) Dickey (1923-1997) American poet, novelist, critic, athlete, and hunter with bow and arrow, best-known from his novel DELIVERANCE (1970), an adventure story of four businessmen canoeing down a dangerous river in rural Georgia. The trip becomes a nightmare of survival. Dickey's dominant medium was poetry, not bestselling fiction. He maintained that poetry should be concerned with basic emotions. "The poet is not trying the tell the truth. He's trying to make it." In his interest in hunting and the outdoors, Dickey came close to Ernest Hemingway. As a pilot, Dickey flew more that 100 missions in WW II and the Korean conflict, 'Funny thing about up younder,' he said. 'The whole thing's different. I mean the whole way of taking life and the terms you take it on.'
'What should I know about that?' I said.
'The trouble is,' he said, 'that you not only don't know anything about it, you don't want to know anything about it.'

  • Drowning With Others
"His greatest danger is a certain expectedness of diction. . . . Still, this second collection of his poems again proves him one of our most serious, able and distinguished voices."
  • Helmets
"Dickey often manages to make his work memorable by the sheer force of what he has to say."
  • Buckdancer's Choice
". . . establishes [Dickey] as one of the most important younger poets of our time. . . . The book has a passionate quality, an intense clarity, a lensing of the totality of being into a kind of carefully separated madness that makes it one of the remarkable books of the decade."
  • Poems 1957-1967
". . . has an unevenness that seems inextricably bound up with the kind of generosity required to by-pass the limits of intellectual and academic audiences."

    James Dickey: An Appreciation
by Chris Lott Some "apprentice works": James Dickey (1923-1997) was, to my mind, simultaneously one of the most well known and one of the least appreciated authors in America. Most people are aware of Dickey's work even if they themselves don't know that they are: his novel Deliverance won the prestigious French Prix Medicis and was later made into an Academy award-winning film in the early seventies that almost everyone has seen (or heard its famous "Dueling Banjo" soundtrack). Dickey's early work, particularly the volumes Into the Stone and Drowning with Others bears a particular resemblance to that of Roethke. Dickey was aware of the words of Roethke, who once said he hoped to come back as some kind of animal— with luck as a lion— but "until death, until this either happens or doesn't happen, I'll have to keep trying to do it, to die and fly, by words." And of course, there is no guarantee of rest, only of return: "At the cycle's center
