Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens was born on Friday, February 7, 1812 in Landport, Hampshire. His father was a clerk in the navy pay office. In 1814 Dickens moved to London, and then to Chatham, where he received some education. He was the second in a family of six children. After his father was imprisoned at the Marshalsea, London, for non-payment of debts, in 1824, Charles took a job in a blacking factory. Next, from 1824 until 1827 Dickens studied at Wellington House Academy, London. From 1827 to 1828 he was a law office clerk, and then worked as a shorthand reporter at Doctor's Commons. In the 1840s Dickens founded Master Humphrey's Cloak and edited the London Daily News. Dickens's relationship with Maria Beadnell, the daughter of a banker, lasted for four years. Afterwards, he married the daughter of his friend George Hogarth, Catherine Hogart in 1836. When Catherine's sisters, Georgiana, moved in with the Dickenses, he fell in love with her. Even though, Dickens had 10 children with Catherine, they were separated in 1858. Additionally, Dickens also had a long-lasting relation with the actress Ellen Ternan, whom he had met by the late 1850s.

Written in 1939
D ICKENS is one of those writers who are well worth stealing. Even the burial of his body in Westminster Abbey was a species of theft, if you come to think of it.
The Cricket on the Hearth This Side Idolatry Hamlet Oliver Twist Hard Times Bleak House Little Dorrit , Dickens attacked English institutions with a ferocity that has never since been approached. Yet he managed to do it without making himself hated, and, more than this, the very people he attacked have swallowed him so completely that he has become a national institution himself. In its attitude towards Dickens the English public has always been a little like the elephant which feels a blow with a walking-stick as a delightful tickling. Before I was ten years old I was having Dickens ladled down my throat by schoolmasters in whom even at that age I could see a strong resemblance to Mr. Creakle, and one knows without needing to be told that lawyers delight in Sergeant Buzfuz and that Little Dorrit is a favourite in the Home Office. Dickens seems to have succeeded in attacking everybody and antagonizing nobody. Naturally this makes one wonder whether after all there was something unreal in his attack upon society. Where exactly does he stand, socially, morally, and politically? As usual, one can define his position more easily if one starts by deciding what he was

Venue type: Pub Review: Simon Woodhouse Not a pub that leaps out at you due to its subterranean location, the Charles Dickens Tavern is reached via a small arcade off Collins Street. Head down the stairs and all is revealed: a rather large room decorated in wood a la the English pub.
The main feel of the pub is one of conversation - management have gone the no music option. During the day it'll be frequented by city workers, however at night it can get popular with families for dinner, as it's 'kids friendly'. In fact, 'friendly' is probably best the overall way management would like to see themselves, as they frown on lager louts and encourage responsible drinking.
But that all goes out the window when the soccer's on.
The Charles Dickens is in the know amongst the soccer supporters. A huge big screen is appreciated by all, and on more popular match days the place will fill to an absurd level. In fact, a sneaky 24-hour licence ensures matches will be aired live. It's also popular with the Formula One crowd, and the occasional backpacker bus which tours through.

Charles Dickens wrote Oliver Twist Great Expectations , and other popular novels of 19th-century England. Dickens' own childhood poverty influenced much of his writing, and he is known especially for characters pulled from the sooty streets of London: orphans and urchins, rogues, shopkeepers, stuffed shirts, widows, and other colorful characters. An all-around workhorse, Dickens edited a monthly magazine, wrote novels, gave public readings and came out with a Christmas story every year. His novels were typically published first in serial form as chapter-by-chapter monthly installments in magazines of the day. Among his major works are Oliver Twist (completed 1839), The Old Curiosity Shop David Copperfield (1850), the historical drama A Tale of Two Cities (1859), and Great Expectations (1861). His 1843 tale A Christmas Carol featured the miser Ebenezer Scrooge and the sickly tot Tiny Tim, and has remained a popular holiday classic into the 21st century.

Punch 'n Dickens
by freshwaterpearls @ attbi.com
Which two well known personalities most clearly represent the spirit of 19th century England? In my view, we could choose no better ambassadors than Mr. Charles Dickens, and Mr. Punch. Both these personalities were immensely popular in the mid to late 1800's in Britain, and both continue to enjoy legendary status and appeal today. One might expect that two such statuesque personalities would, in their day, have had an antagonistic relationship; did each feel he must compete keenly with the other, for the public's admiration? We have no record of Mr. Punch's attitude toward Mr. Dickens. But this fact is luminously clear: Mr. Dickens adored Mr. Punch. Not only did Charles Dickens publicly defend the Punch and Judy show against those who felt it to be an immoral entertainment; he also alluded to the show and its characters in many of his literary works.
Punch - A Novel Adornment
Dickens' references to the Punch and Judy Show serve several functions in his writings. Often Punch is used simply as a descriptive ornament to help convey the atmosphere or mood of a location in the story. Dickens was a master of descriptive prose. His portraits of 19th century London often a sooty, dank, crowded and oppressive place are unequaled in their crisp and ironic imagery. The presence of a Punch show in such scenes seemed to represent the seedy, unprosperous life that was too often the lot of Punchmen and their lower class audiences. I beheld a Punch's Show leaning against a wall near Park Lane, as if it had fainted. It was deserted, and there were none to heed its desolation. (from

I mplementation Overview
"Discovering Dickens" may be used at whatever point in the literature study the teacher deems appropriate. Learning more about the author whose works are being read seems valuable at the beginning but at times it may be more worthwhile to use the unit as enrichment. These activities may be completed by individuals or groups of students working on a single computer either in the classroom, the computer lab, or the library media center, as a supplement to the study of the basic texts. Students who choose this supplement will rotate days in the larger classroom group activities with this small group unit using a computer linked to the Internet. These activities might be part of a larger unit on a Dickens' novel. Activities could also be assigned as homework to those "connected" to the Internet.

MARLEY'S GHOST.
M ARLEY was dead, to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it. And Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Scrooge knew he was dead? Of course he did. How could it be otherwise? Scrooge and he were partners for I don't know how many years. Scrooge was his sole executor, his sole administrator, his sole assign, his sole residuary legatee, his sole friend, his sole mourner. Scrooge never painted out old Marley's name, however. There it yet stood, years afterwards, above the warehouse door, Scrooge and Marley. The firm was known as Scrooge and Marley. Sometimes people new to the business called Scrooge Scrooge, and sometimes Marley. He answered to both names. It was all the same to him.

Charles Dickens
Hard Times
Chapter 2
Murdering the Innocents
Thomas Gradgrind, sir. A man of realities. A man of fact and calculations. A man who proceeds upon the principle that two and two are four, and nothing over, and who is not to be talked into allowing for anything over. Thomas Gradgrind, sir peremptorily Thomas Thomas Gradgrind. With a rule and a pair of scales, and the multiplication table always in his pocket, sir, ready to weigh and measure any parcel of human nature, and tell you exactly what it comes to. It is a mere question of figures, a case simple arithmetic. You might hope to get some other nonsensical belief into the head of George Gradgrind, or Augustus Gradgrind or John Gradgrind, or Joseph Gradgrind (all suppositions, no existent persons), but into the head of Thomas Gradgrind no sir! In such terms Mr. Gradgrind always mentally introduced himself, whether to his private circle of acquaintance, or to the public in general. In such terms, no doubt, substituting the words 'boys and girls', for 'sir', Thomas Gradgrind now presented Thomas Gradgrind to the little pitchers before him, who were to be filled so full of facts. Indeed, as he eagerly sparkled at them from the cellarage before mentioned, he seemed a kind of cannon loaded to the muzzle with facts, and prepared to blow them clean out of the regions of childhood at one discharge. He seemed a galvanizing apparatus, too, charged with a grim mechanical substitute for the tender young imaginations that were to be stormed away.
