No doubt it was a special occasion. A rare public sighting of Ms. Desai. With her gentle voice, tender features, and silver-white hair, she seemed to belong to a time and place very different from ours.
Born 70 years ago in Mussoorie, Anita Mazumdar Desai grew up speaking neither English nor Hindi as her first language. It was German. Her mother was from Germany and her father was a Bengali businessman. Later, Ms. Desai went on to establish a deep bond with Delhi. It was here that she spent her college years getting a degree in English Literature from Miranda House. It was here that she chose to set up a house in the initial years of her marriage. It was here that her novelist daughter, Kiran, was born. She now spends her time in US.
Heat and Dust . But, Ms. Desai did it differently. Among her fine works, the one which

February 12, 2000. Notes on the Biography of Anita Desai Anita Desai was born in 1935 in Delhi to a German mother and a Bengali father. She grew up speaking German at home and Bengali, Urdu, Hindi and English at school and in the city streets. She has said that she grew up surrounded by Western literature and music, not realizing until she was older that this was an anomaly in her world where she also learned the Eastern culture and customs. She married a businessman at twenty-one and raised several children before becoming known for her writing. Her first book, Cry,the Peacock was published in England in 1963, and her better known novels include In Custody (1984) and Baumgartner's Bombay (1988). She once wrote: "I see India through my mother's eyes, as an outsider, but my feelings for India are my father's, of someone born here" (Griffiths).
She never considered trying to first publish in India because there was no publisher in India who would be interested in fiction by an Indian writer (Jussawalla) and it was first in England that her work became noticed. U.S. readers were slower to discover her, due, she believes to England's natural interest in India and the U.S.'s lack of comprehension regarding the foreignness of her subject.
But Desai only writes in English. This, she has repeatedly said, was a natural and unconscious choice for her: "I can state definitely that I did not choose English in a deliberate and conscious act and I'd say perhaps it was the language that chose me and I started writing stories in English at the age of seven, and have been doing so for thirty years now without stopping to think why "(Desai).

Claire Messud Published 06 September 2004 The Zigzag Way
Anita Desai
ISBN 0701177438 Anita Desai is justifiably renowned for her keen, subtle eye and her calmly elegant prose. She is also a mistress of synecdoche, a writer whose delicate portraits of the quotidian resonate outwards to convey tumultuous swathes of history. Although the characters in Clear Light of Day (1980) barely venture beyond their front gate, they live out the legacy of India's bitter battle for independence. Hers is a miniaturist's gift, precise, deft and powerful. In The Zigzag Way , Desai turns her eye to a new continent. Set in Mexico, the novel weaves together the travels of a young American named Eric, an aged Austrian eccentric named Dona Vera, and a long-dead Cornish miner's wife, Betty Jennings. Through them, Desai sets out to depict the upheavals of 20th-century Mexico, primarily relating to the gold and silver mines in the Sierra Madre. We are introduced to the ongoing plight of the indigenous Huichols; to the difficult lives of the British miners, stranded far from home in the early part of the century; and to the effect, during that time, of Pancho Villa's revolution.

The Zigzag Way by Anita Desai
Houghton Mifflin, Boston In her long career in fiction, Anita Desai has won well-deserved praise for her elegant, evocative prose and for the keen intelligence with which she explores culture and character. In her fourteenth novel, the half-Bengali, half-German Desai, who has often focused on India and on Indians living elsewhere, turns to another land: Mexico. In The Zigzag Way , she illuminates that country's vistas and history, and the intertwined lives of three very different foreigners who venture there, with characteristic grace, skill, and insight. We first meet Eric, an aimless American graduate student struggling to expand his thesis on immigration into a book. He follows his more disciplined and competent scientist girlfriend on a research trip to Mexico. Eric fortuitously becomes aware that his Cornish grandfather once worked in the mines of Mexico and sets out to learn more. That journey brings him to a near-deserted mining town, just before the Day of the Dead. We are then returned to the past, where we meet Eric's grandmother, Betty Jennings, a plucky, appealing young woman who travels to Mexico in 1910 to marry a Cornish miner. Soon Betty's intriguing life in Mexico is thrown into turmoil by the outbreak of revolution and ends abruptly in childbirth. The book's magical, haunting final section follows Eric on the Day of the Dead as he seeks Betty's grave and encounters both past and present.

http://www.feminista.com/archives/v3n7/chandra.html
According to K.K.Ruthven, the central hypothesis of feminist literary criticism is that "gender is a crucial determinant in the production, circulation and consumption of literary discourse"(Feminist literary studies: 1991,9). But within this school two schools have emerged - those who analyze writings by male authors to see how women characters are portrayed and those who analyze women writers themselves (sometimes called the gynocritics). Elaine Showalter lucidly defines this term as a concern with "women as writers . . . the history, styles, themes, genres, and structures of writing by women; the psychodynamics of female creativity; the trajectory of the individual or collective female career; and the evolution and laws of a female literary tradition"('Feminist criticism in the wilderness' Critical inquiry: 1981,184-185). Anita Desai, the author of the upcoming novel Fasting, Feasting (now available in the UK) is an Indian, writing in English, living in the U.S. I wondered, what kind of style or theme or structure does this kind of background produce? How does this affect her creativity? What literary tradition does this writer fall back on? Or does she find her own? Fasting, Feasting

As the story begins, Suno bemoans the constant noise in his home, where he is confined to study for his university entrance exam. The sound of the news being read in several different languages comes from his father's room. The noise from the kitchen is a constant clash and clanging of pots and utensils, as his mother prepares meals. Outside on the street, the traffic is a cacophony of bells, whistles and sirens. The delivery of milk is the worst intrusion, because Suno is continually provided milk with sugar in it to provide energy. ( read more Summary

Get more information about this book Plot Summary of In Custody "This is a novel about a small-town man, Deven, who gets the opportunity to go interview his hero, the great poet Nur, the greatest living Urdu poet. Having always loved Urdu poetry and missed the chance to be an Urdu language professor, he is charmed into going to Delhi the big city. Even though he shrinks at the idea of possibly being exploited by his sharp and selfish friend Murad, the dream of meeting Nur draws him on. So he sets off on a number of adventures on Sundays, the one free day that he should have spent with his wife and son.
What Deven finds at his hero's house is misery and confusion. Having sunk into a senile old age, surrounded by fawning sycophants, married to a younger calculating wife who wants to use his glory to win herself fame, Nur is not what he once was. Or perhaps he always was this.
Deven, a shrinking and weak man, is somehow drawn to this old poet, wishing to help and protect him even as he cannot defend himself. Perhaps it is the tie of Urdu poetry that he remembers from his treasured times as a child with his father.
