Revisiting Anita Desai
December 04, 2007
A merican colleges and universities are notorious for professors with big reputations who barely have time for their students. But, in the two odd decades that she has taught in America, especially at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Professor Anita Desai was always known for being accessible. At the same time, she would be as firm with the students as she is with journalists and fellow writers. You had better not waste her time. And you had better know the books you want to discuss well. In fact, in your own interest, listen to her. Gentle and giving as she is, she will, with quiet authority, tell even the most celebrated person where she stands on an issue. Imagine then, this gentle and frail woman admonishing Nobel laureate V S Naipaul, telling him not to be so polemical in his writing that he was whipping up Hindu passions against Muslims in India. Imagine her telling filmmaker Ismail Merchant she was 'shocked' to see his version of her novel

It is plainly evident in works such as Fire on the Mountain and Voices in the City. The characters she crafts, the strands of narration she weaves and the issues she explores in-depth are her hallmarks. To meet Anita is to see her brilliance shine brighter. It’s exhilarating to interact with such a dynamic and fertile mind. But to spend several days with Ms Desai is to be overawed, perhaps even a little jealous. For days in succession, you see her field questions, process the information and produce witty, succinct responses without pause. When she agrees with an argument, she adeptly recapitulates it and advances it further. When she disagrees, she politely states her reasons for opposition and why they are important.

    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
Desai was born on June 24, 1937, at Mussoorie, a hill station north of Delhi, India, to D. N. Mazumdar, a Bengali business executive, and Toni Nime, a German expatriate. As a child, Desai spoke German at home and Hindi among her friends. At primary school, she learned to read and write English—which eventually became her literary language—publishing her first short story at the age of nine. Despite the somewhat limited opportunities for women in Indian society, Desai attended Queen Mary's Higher Secondary School in New Delhi before enrolling at Miranda House, Delhi University, where she earned a bachelor's degree with honors in English literature in 1957. In December of 1958, she married Ashrin Desai, with whom she has four children. Although she regularly wrote short stories since adolescence, Desai officially launched her career as a novelist in 1963 with the British publication of Cry, the Peacock

    Voices in the City
Based almost exclusively on the life of the middle class intellectuals of Calcutta, Voices in the City The novel describes the corrosive effects of city life upon an Indian family. Brought up in luxury by an over-indulgent mother, Nirode settles down in Calcutta and becomes absorbed into its bohemian life, while his elder sister Monisha lives out a servile existence within the rigid confines of a traditional Hindu family. Their younger sister arrives from the country and becomes involved with an artist; but the outcome of this and the dreadful decision Monisha eventually takes, make this novel a doubly haunting and a consummate work of art.
