Rashid Long-time Detroiters refer to the old African-American districts of Paradise Valley and Black Bottom as if they were interchangeable, but the terms actually refer to two different inner east-side areas sharing the border of Gratiot Avenue. Black Bottom, proceeding south from Gratiot as far as the Detroit River, was the older of the two. Paradise Valley-which attained its identity in the twenties, thirties, and forties-spread north with the growing African-American population from Gratiot along the major thoroughfares of John R, Brush, Beaubien, St. Antoine, Hastings, and Russell, eventually stretching to the area known as the North End, beyond the northern loop of East Grand Boulevard. Two well-known poets, Robert Hayden (1913-1980) and Dudley Randall (1914-2000), grew up in Black Bottom and Paradise Valley. Hayden, who was born in Paradise Valley, lived with his foster-parents in homes on St. Antoine, Beacon, and Napolean Streets, and East Vernor Highway, worshipped with his foster parents at Second Baptist Church , attended Detroit schools-graduating from Northern High School and Detroit City College ( Wayne State University )-and worked as a reporter and columnist for the

Historical Note
"On May 4, 5, and 6, 1990 a Gathering of Poets was held at Kent State University in conjunction with the May 4th 20th Anniversary Commission events. Approximately 125 poets from all over the United States responded to personal invitations or to the open call to poets to come to Kent State on May 4th and remember the four students left dead and the nine others wounded by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. An ad-hoc committee of the May 4th 20th Anniversary Commission planned all the poetry events. Members of this committee were poets who live in Kent, some affiliated with Kent State University and some not .... In addition to the poets who attended the Gathering of Poets, many others who were not able to attend sent poems or messages to be read." So describes Gathering convener and poet Maggie Anderson in the proposal for the published anthology, A Gathering of Poets which resulted from the convergence of poets at Kent State in May of 1990.

46. The Weakness - Written By Famous African American Poet Toi Derricotte… Do Enjoy
away from those eyes that saw through her clothes, under her skin, all the way down to the transparent genes confessing. Written by toi derricotte

Mr. Africa Poetry Lounge!
The Weakness
That time my grandmother dragged me
through the perfume aisles at Saks, she held me up
by my arm, hissing, "Stand up,"
through clenched teeth, her eyes
bright as a dog's
cornered in the light.
She said it over and over,
as if she were Jesus,
and I were dead. She had been
solid as a tree,
a fur around her neck, a light-skinned matron whose car was parked, who walked on swirling marble and passed through brass openingsin 1945. There was not even a black elevator operator at Saks. The saleswoman had brought velvet leggings to lace me in, and cooed, as if in service of all grandmothers. My grandmother had smiled, but not hungrily, not like my mother who hated them, but wanted to please, and they had smiled back, as if they were wearing wooden collars. When my legs gave out, my grandmother dragged me up and held me like God holds saints by the roots of the hair. I begged her to believe I couldn't help it. Stumbling, her face white with sweat, she pushed me through the crowd, rushing away from those eyes that saw through her clothes, under

Records of a small poetry and review magazine. Consists of general, contributor, and publication correspondence. Includes materials primarily pertaining to the magazine's last six years of publication, 1981-1987. See Collection 3705 for material relating to the magazine's first fifteen years.
DONOR INFORMATION
Open Places was loaned to the University of Missouri for copying by Eleanor Bender, the editor of Open Places , on 2 August 1988 (Accession No. 4863).
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Eleanor M. Bender began editing Open Places , a contemporary poetry and review magazine, out of her New York City apartment in 1966. With the support of private monies and subscriptions, the magazine was published sporadically. From its first appearance, Bender intended Open Places to be a quarterly publication, but this was not realized until 1968 when she moved to Columbia, Missouri. Through the assistance of Max Baird, Bender began printing the magazine quarterly as a Southern Critic publication. Together Bender and Baird produced issues 5 and 6. With issue 7/8
