"It's no accident that my first novel was called Americana. This was . . . a statement of my intention to use the whole picture, the whole culture."
In novel after award-winning novel, Don DeLillo (b. 1936) exhibits his deep distrust of language and the way it can conceal as much as it reveals. Not surprisingly, DeLillo treats interviews with the same care and caution. For years, he shunned them altogether. As his fiction grew in popularity, especially with White Noise , and he began to confront the historical record of our times in books such as Libra , DeLillo felt compelled to make himself available to his readers. Despite claims by interviewers about his elusiveness, he now hides in plain sight. In Conversations with Don DeLillo , the renowned author makes clear his distinctions between historical fact and his own creative leaps, especially in his masterwork, Underworld . There it seems the true events are unbelievable and imaginary ones not. Throughout long profiles and conversations-ranging from 1982 to 2001 and published in the New Yorker , the Paris Review , and Rolling Stone -DeLillo parries personal inquiries. He counters with the details of his work habits, his understanding of the novelist's role in the world, and his sense of our media-saturated culture. A number of interviews detail DeLillo's less-heralded work in the theater, from

(Also wrote under the pseudonym Cleo Birdwell) American novelist and playwright. The following entry presents an overview of DeLillo's career through 1999. For further information on his life and works, see CLC, Volumes 8, 10, 13, 27, 39, 54, and 76.
    INTRODUCTION
Regarded as one of the finest novelists and sharpest social critics of contemporary American life, DeLillo, like such authors as John Barthes, Thomas Pynchon, and Kurt Vonnegut, writes in a postmodernist vein. From Americana (1971) to The Body Artist Libra (1988) and Underworld (1997). The publication of Underworld has not only enhanced his reputation in general but has also renewed critical interest in his earlier works.
    Biographical Information
The son of Italian immigrants, DeLillo was born November 20, 1936, in the Bronx borough of New York City. He grew up in an Italian-American neighborhood, attending Cardinal Hayes High School and later enrolling at Fordham University, where he majored in communication arts. After graduating in 1958, he briefly worked during the early 1960s as a copywriter at Ogilvy and Mather, an advertising agency. About 1967, DeLillo started writing what later became his first novel, Americana.

DeLillo builds these various stories by piling up dozens of small set pieces of three or four pages duration. DeLillo has used this technique elsewhere most ambitiously in Underworld and it is one of the trademarks of his style. His plots accumulate through these vignettes, and he constantly shifts the scene in the manner of a film director, never letting any storyline dominate for more than a few pages at a time.

In his famous (some might say infamous) appendix to his influential study, The Postmodern Condition , cultural theorist Jean-François Lyotard contends that the postmodern work struggles continuously, if paradoxically, to find a way to present the unpresentable. Its goal, whether in the form of one of Ad Reinhardt's all-black canvases, Beckett's Unnameable , or David Lynch's Lost Highway , is to "enable us to see only by making it impossible to see"; to "please only by causing pain." There are some situations, Lyotard maintains, that by their very nature cannot be thought about or articulated within the bounds of reason. There are some eventshe cites Auschwitzwhose atrocious complexities refuse to be reduced to conventional understanding, conventional storylines and forms, to anything other than what they are: manifestations of unimaginable difficulty and radical existential unease. In the wake of such limit situations, you can only say, along with one of the characters in Don DeLillo's astonishing Falling Man : "Nothing seems exaggerated anymore. Nothing amazes me."

    59. Don DeLillo: Underworld · Spike Magazine
Gary Marshall Starting with a 1951 baseball game and ending with the Internet, Underworld is not a book for the fainthearted.
    http://spikemagazine.com/1298dond.php
SpikeMagazine.com Book Reviews Interviews Features ... Contact Contributor Gary Marshall Following three main themes - the fate of a baseball from the winning game of the 1951 world series, the threat of atomic warfare and the mountains of garbage created by modern society - DeLillo moves forwards and backwards through the decades, introducing characters and situations and gradually showing the way their lives are interconnected. Reading the prose can be uncannily like using a web browser: the narrative focus moves from character to character almost as quickly as we are introduced to them, and the time frame regularly changes to show further connections between the key players. This device - literature as hypertext - is particularly effective in the early parts of the novel and the technique never intrudes on the story itself. [Published December 1998]
