Don DeLillo's Bum Luck
The novelist's low status in an age of cultural proliferation Nick Gillespie Print Edition In February, a literary event of no small significance occurred. Don DeLillo, arguably America's finest living novelist still in full control of his talents and inarguably one of the most important and respected writers of the past 30 years released his 12th work of fiction, a novella called The Body Artist . Though the critical response to The Body Artist has been less than uniformly positive, its sheer volume testifies to DeLillo's eminence. This is a book that has been written up everywhere that matters The New York Times even saw fit to review it twice and many places that don't.

Intensity of a Plot
An interview with Don DeLillo
DeLillo originally traveled to Ground Zero with vague intentions of writing an essay about the attacks. (The essay was eventually published in With his fourteenth novel, Falling Man, Players Falling Man End Zone , about nuclear war and a college football team, and Underworld , which opens, famously, with a panoramic scene at the 1951 World Series. DeLillo also published a novel called Amazons Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man [Interview by Mark Binelli] Guernica: White Noise Don DeLillo: Cosmopolis on September 11th, and I just stopped dead for some time, and decided to work on the essay instead. Later, after I finished Cosmopolis , I had been thinking about another novel for some months when I began thinking about what would become Falling Man . What made it happen was a visual image: a man in a suit and tie, carrying a briefcase, walking through a storm of smoke and ash. I had nothing beyond that. And then a few days later, it occurred to me that the briefcase was not his. And that seemed to start a chain of thought that led to the actual setting of words on paper. Guernica: Did this image just come out of nowhere, or from a photograph, or from stories of people you knew?

Don DeLillo (1936-) American novelist and playwright, who has explored icons, obsessions, idiosyncrasies, and the dark recesses of the American culture. DeLillo has been mentioned as a contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Through a highly acclaimed writer, DeLillo seldom gives interviews and never shows up on late-night television. "It's my nature to keep quiet about most things. Even the ideas of my work. When you try to understand something you've written, you belittle it in a way. It was created as a mystery, on part. Here is a new map of the world; it is seven shades of blue. If you're able to be straightforward and penetrating about this invention of yours, it's almost as though you're saying it wasn't altogether necessary. The sources weren't deep enough." (from Conversations With Don DeLillo , ed. by Thomas DePietro, 2005) DeLillo was born in the Bronx, New York, to Italian immigrant parents. His father worked as a payroll clerk at Metropolitan Life, in Manhattan. Later DeLillo has said, that New York has an "enormous influence" on his work - "the paintings in the Museum of Modern Art, the music at the Jazz Gallery and the Village Vanguard, the movies of Fellini and Godard and Howard Hawks." In 1954 DeLillo entered the Jesuit-run Fordham University, where he studied history, philosophy and theology, receiving his B.A. in 1958. For some time DeLillo worked as a copywriter for the advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather, but then devoted himself to writing. DeLillo lived in a small apartment with no stove. To support himself, he had a series of temporary jobs.

Scout's Report: What to look for in 2007
Here is the first of an occasional feature we'll publish from New York book scout, Maria Campbell:
The book that I am most looking forward to rereading in 2007 is Don DeLillo's tour de force FALLING MAN. I read the manuscript in one breathless sitting with my heart in my mouth. Scribner will publish in May or June.
The book is a meditation through time, following a family as they attempt to right themselves in the few years after 9/11. The book represents an important articulation of the current American state of mind, giving narrative form to the process of dealing with our doubts, our fears, and the idea of existing in a new, shifting world. DeLillo takes on all the big questions and brilliantly reflects the personal process that his characters struggle through as a document and testament to the current moment in American history.
A fascinating feature of DeLillo's writing is his capacity to communicate the process of the creation of a narrative. The images, sounds and descriptions that define his style, especially at the outset of the book. are analgous to the way the mind processes the world around us. The astonishing power of this book derives from the way it forces the reader to construct the stories of the main characters, and in so doing, relive and rediscover the personal meaning of the attacks for themselves. Everything is story. Everything is narrative that we construct to make sense of our place in the world. The novel depicts the compulsion to tell stories as our most basic and powerful impulse. It is a tour de force.

Speaking of Don DeLillo...
...Jean Hannah Edelstein, over at The Guardian's books blog , has this to say about your chances of becoming her husband
[W]hile other women may be able to fall back on the classic mainstays of nationality or religion when discriminating between potential suitors, as the dual-passported daughter of an interfaith couple, I've had to find less traditional ways to discriminate. And that is why, when making these important decisions, I turn to Don DeLillo.
You see, I could never learn to love a man who didn't appreciate White Noise , DeLillo's masterful satire and my hands-down all-time favourite book.
Jean, just for the record, I do appreciate White Noise . Liked it quite a bit, actually. But, uh, I'm taken. So, you know. I know I'm dead sexy and all, but you should probably stop calling me.
I'm lucky enough on the love front, in any case. My girlfriend and I share similar but not freakishly identical literary tastes. Like, we both dig on dead Russians. Though I think I'm primarily a Dostoevsky man, myself. I'm liking

Hot dogs with mustard and relish and sauerkraut and ketchup all steamed and fissured and revealed in a languorous process of unwrapping. You want these hot dogs, America. Cold beer right here. Overcompensate for the absence of individuation as you adopt the vocabulary of the crowd. The stinging stresses of hurled epithets, lubricated, emboldened. The counterclockwise twistings of caps from plastic containers. MGD and Coors Lite and Miller High Life. Cold beer. Cotton candy. Spun around a cardboard horn. You kids want cotton candy. You want the astringent granularity of abraded tongues. Pink or blue? Get your peanuts. Small and brown and sealed, salted. Peanuts to be extracted from their shells, their papery red sheaths inadequate, vestigial. A yesteryear snack food complicit in its own enshrinement as a ballpark icon. The slow ritual of discardment, the accumulation of shells a slowly growing pyre. The giving flesh of the nut, the residual belch hours after the ninth inning has passed and the lights have grown solid and vital on the parkway. I got your chocolate malts. Get them before they melt before they return to a more and placid and unspoonable state. A wooden slab encased in paper comes with the malts, a device for penetrating the ungiving surface. You must wait until the malt becomes pliable, penetrable, the undifferentiated zone between liquid and solid. Yes, one flavor. One flavor of malt which is chocolate.

The Mailer Review
By Dwight Garner The inaugural issue of The Mailer Review. Norman Mailer is said to be very ill and in the hospital, and we hope he pulls through. The Mailer Review , a product of the University of South Florida and the Norman Mailer Society. The journal’s editor, Phillip Sipiora, has deftly searched the Mailer archives (at the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, among other places) and rounded up a lot of first-rate material. There’s nary a dull page among its 265. What’s here? There’s a smart, Mailer-related self-interview by William Kennedy; an excerpt from an uncompleted authorized biography of Mailer; a chunk of an unpublished play from 1942; a long interview with Lawrence Schiller, who collaborated with Mailer on “The Executioner’s Song” (Schiller tells the interviewer that he’d originally hoped that Joan Didion would write the book with him); and letters to William Styron and to and from Don DeLillo, among others. here . "White Noise"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark May 03, 1998) White Noise is the story of Jack and Babette and their children from several previous marriages. They live in a college town where Jack is a Professor of Hitler Studies,Babette teaches posture and reads tabloids to elderly people. Except for the possibility of some drug that Babette seems to be hiding, everything is normal chaos in their lives. And then a deadly toxic accident causes them to seek shelter, bringing to surface this nagging fear of death. DeLillo has a knack for capturing the essence of American popular culture through intelligence and ironic humor.
