The Semiology of Silence

The following text began as a conversation that took place in New York City (in August of 1983) between Samuel R. Delany and Sinda Gregory and Larry McCaffery (both from San Diego State University). Another piece based on the same conversation is included in their book, Alive and Writing: Interviews with American Authors of the 1980s (just out from Illinois UP).
Samuel R. Delany
: I begin, a sentence lover. I'm forever delighted, then delighted all over, at the things sentences can trip and trick you into saying, into seeing. I'm astonished—just plain tickled!—at the sharp turns and tiny tremors they can whip your thoughts across. I'm entranced by their lollop and flow, their prickles and points. Poetry is made of words, Mallarmé told us a hundred years back. But I write prose. And prose is made of sentences. Oh, I've always been a bathroom dictionary browser. Still—"In the beginning was the word..."? I suppose poets have to feel that way. But for me, the word's a degenerate sentence, a fragmentary utterance, something incomplete. Mollying along, lonesome Mrs Masters asks, "Why aren't there any decent words?" Well, no word is decent by itself; and less than a dozen indecent— shit, fuck

Empire Star by Samuel R. Delany
I've spent the past week reading Samuel Delany's early fiction in roughly chronological order, starting with The Jewels of Aptor , then continuing on to The Fall of the Towers trilogy Babel-17 , and Empire Star (which Vintage has conveniently packaged together ). (And yes, I realize I've missed The Ballad of Beta 2 I misplaced my copy and so decided to continue on until I figure out which pile of books it got buried under.)
The only one of these books I'd read before was Babel-17 , the first Delany novel I ever encountered, having been introduced to his work through the stories "Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones" and "Aye, and Gomorrah" in anthologies. It's been ages since I read any of Delany's pre- Dhalgren books, and the experience has been illuminating.
Delany's early work is the writing of an extraordinarily intelligent and talented young man, but The Jewels of Aptor and The Fall of the Towers really only possess interest because of what they show us about Delany's progression as a writer, since they contain so many nascent versions of characters, images, situations, and ideas that would gain more subtle and complex presentation later. Even a book like

style/content s-f is its speculative content? As well, in the middle of the last decade there was much argument about Old Wave and New Wave s-f The words content meaning , and information are all metaphors for an abstract quality of a word or group of words. The one I would like to concentrate on is: Is content real? Another way to ask this question is: Is there such a thing as verbal information apart from the words used to inform? Most of the vocabulary of criticism is set up to imply there is. Information is carried by/with/in words. People are carried by/with/in cars. It should be as easy to separate the information from the word as it is to open the door of a Ford Mustang: Content means something that is contained But let us go back to information red b in bread ? The word generates no significant information until it is put in formal relation The idea of meaning information , or content content or information ) are the formal relations between sounds and images of the objective world.

By Arthur Salm
BOOKS EDITOR June 8, 2003 I A soft-spoken man who frequently punctuates comments with a short, breathy chuckle, Delany possesses a ferocious and uncompromising intelligence. As a professor of English and creative writing at Philadelphia's Temple University, he writes abstruse, sometimes knotty literary criticism. Born in Harlem in 1942 and married very young, Delany didn't set out to write speculative/futuristic tales. thought was the world's most realistic fiction, as a teenager. But I always liked reading science fiction, so when I was 19 I wrote a science-fiction novel ('The Jewels of Aptor'), and it sold. So I wrote another one, and another one, and another and another. be Actually, the story is even better than that. His wife at the time, who was all of 18, worked for Ace, a paperback publisher in New York. She frequently came home complaining about the stuff she had to read and edit.

Home A 1996 Interview with Samuel R. Delany The Center for Book Culture has a 1996 interview with Samuel R. Delany Here's an excerpt that fits in with our recent Mind Meld posts SRD: I suppose the questions I dont like include: "What makes a good plot?" "What's your definition of SF?" "Where do you get your ideas?" When an interviewer asks me such questions, I have to reconstruct why I don't believe there is such a thing as plot for the writer in the usual sense; or why SF belongs to a category of object, as do all written genres, for which it is impossible to find necessary and sufficient conditions (that is, it belongs to a category of' object that resists definition in the rigorous sense of the word); or that ideas are not things buteven the simplest of themcomplex processes and as such don't "come from" any "place" but are rather process-responses to any number of complex situations. With such questions, many of the ideas I'm dealing with are counterintuitive. And counter-intuitive ideas can't be explained quickly to someone who doesn't have a firm handle on them already. Interviewed by Tasha Robinson August 8th, 2001 When Samuel R. Delany first started writing science fiction in the early 1960s, he was one of only a tiny handful of blacks active in the field, and he had trouble shaking the erroneous label of "the first black science-fiction author." These days, he's a college professor whose writings include essays, critical reviews, sociological treatises, pornography, graphic novels, and autobiographies, but the "sci-fi author" label still sticks with him, and likely always will; his seminal works are still considered classics of the genre. Vintage Books recently republished Delany's 1974 masterwork Dhalgren

Samuel R. Delaney
Samuel R. "Chip" Delaney is a noted science-fiction author. One of his most famous novels is " Dahlgren ," an apocalyptic tale which received rave reviews in 1975.. The bisexual theme of the novel clearly reflects its author's private life. He was born in New York City on April 1, 1942. His family owned a mortuary in Harlem. As a child, he was reportedly fascinated with math and science as well as books, theatre, and music. At age ten, he discovered his major sexual preference was homosexual. His mother's discovery of a binder of his masturbatory fantasies led to a round of psychotherapy. He attended the Bronx High School of Science but also wrote his first novel at age 13 and composed music (including a symphony).
In 1961, Delaney married the talented young poet Marilyn Hacker. They had to travel to Michigan to get married because of laws against miscegenation and different age of consent laws for men and women. Hacker knew of Delaney's homosexuality but they had become sexually intimate and she was impregnated. This is what led to the decision to marry. They divorced in 1980.
Delaney's first novel was The Jewels of Aptor . By age 26, he had won four Nebula Awards, though he made little money from any of these works. In 1967, he briefly explored a career as a musician and performed with the band
