More Information Len Deighton was born in London on 18th February 1929, his parents worked in service and his education was greatly impeded by the war. He did his National Service in the RAF before going to Art College. He worked doing illustration for papers etc until, whilst still freelancing, his first novel was published the now legendary Ipcress File . The character Harry Palmer was an immediate success with subsequent outings becoming international bestsellers. The character was immortalised on screen by Michael Cain in a series of classic films. The authors output continued, though sadly the Palmer character was dropped, with aplomb and Deighton become one of the most successful spy/thriller writers in the world.

Deighton, Len. SS-GB . London: Grafton, 1987. 402pp.
One of the classics of the alternate history genre, one that I've obviously only just now gotten around to reading. Sometimes the old classics don't hold up so well and sometimes they do. How did Deighton fare? Pretty good actually, for a mainstream author dabbling in sf. This is basically a spy/detective novel set in a London newly occupied by the Nazis. Our protagonist, the homicide cop, is trying to solve a murder that suddenly everyone seems interested in, getting him involved with both the SS and the resistence at the same time. It drags a bit in the middle, but over all a solid alternate history that really shows that the author spent a lot of time working out the implications of a Nazi-occupied Britain. posted by John Dupuis @ 9:07 PM

Hi: I would like to purchase a copy of the game, set and match series. I believe it was produced by Granada television. Any help would be most appreciated. Regards, Steve Moody Sorry, it was never released commercially. Apparently, Len Deighton was not happy with the production and has blocked all attempts to realease it. I have been told, however, that it is possible to get a copy of the series from Granada but it is VERY expensive. Personally. I have acquired 10 of the 12 episodes on tape from various sources (and have a line on the other two) but sadly they cannot be copied (as a whole) very easily as they are in different formats (PAL, NTSC, Beta, VHS - and even VCD). Finding someone who has a complete set is difficult and, even if you do, persuading them to make a copy for you may be even more so. Some people do not wish to be hassled with frequent requests for copies (and I don't blame them!). We can only hope that some entrepreneur persuades Len Deighton to change his mind and allow a commercial release. I don't blame Deighton for trying to suppress the triolgy "Berlin: Game, Set, and Match". While Ian Holm is a great actor, he was not a good choice to play Bernard Samson. And, the television adaptation was jerky and unclear. I was very disappointed in the PBS presentation.
