Deighton's interest in spy stories may have been partially inspired by the arrest of Anna Wolkoff , which he witnessed as an 11-year-old boy. Wolkoff was a British citizen of Russian descent who was a Nazi spy. She was detained on May 20 , and charged with violating the Official Secrets Act for attempting to pass secret documents to the Nazis. In Deighton attended St Martin's School of Art in London , and in won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art , graduating in . While he was at the RCA he became a "lifelong friend" of fellow designer Raymond Hawkey , who later designed the covers for his books. Deighton then worked as an airline steward with BOAC . Following his National Service, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and The Royal College of Art. After graduating in 1955, he joined BOAC as an air steward, then left to pursue a career as designer and illustrator. Deighton worked on all kinds of advertising and publicity material in London and New York, did drawings for several magazines and illustrated book-jackets for various publishers.     Len Deighton was born in London in 1929. He worked as a railway clerk before doing his National Service in the RAF as a photographer attached to the Special Investigation Branch. After his discharge in 1949, he went to art school at the St. Martin's School of Art and then to the Royal College of Art on a scholarship. It was during his time as a waiter in the evenings that he developed an interest in cooking . He worked for a while as an illustrator in New York City and as art director of an advertising agency in London. Deighton moved to Dordogne when he decided to settle down. This is when he worked on his first book, "The Ipcress File". The book became an immediate and spectacular success when it was released in 1962. Since then he as become quite the accomplished writer with 26 works of fiction and non-fiction to his name. Most of his novels are of the genre of Spy Stories, Highly Researched War Novels and Histories.

    Len Deighton (b. 1929) British writer, best known for his labyrinthine and ironic espionage thrillers. Along with , who also started his career in the early 1960s, Len Deighton has expanded the boundaries of the genre by examining ethical and moral problems of the Cold War. As well as his novels, Deighton has written on food and wine and nonfiction books mostly about World War II. "Writers are frequently asked why they wrote their first book. A more interesting answer might come from asking them why they wrote their second one. Anyone can write one book: even politicians do it. Starting a second book reveals an intention to be a professional writer." (Len Deighton in 'Preface' to Horse Under Water , Silver Jubilee Edition 1987) permitted to write books."
