Executive summary: Robinson Crusoe English author, born in the parish of St. Giles, Cripplegate, London, in the latter part of 1659 or early in 1660, of a nonconformist family. His grandfather, Daniel Foe, lived at Etton, Northamptonshire, apparently in comfortable circumstances, for he is said to have kept a pack of hounds. As to the variation of name, Defoe or Foe, its owner signed either indifferently until late in life, and where his initials occur they are sometimes D.F. and sometimes D.D.F. Three autograph letters of his are extant, all addressed in 1705 to the same person, and signed respectively D. Foe, de Foe and Daniel Defoe. His father, James Foe, was a butcher and a citizen of London. Daniel was well educated at a famous dissenting academy, Mr. Charles Morton's of Stoke Newington, where many of the best-known nonconformists of the time were his schoolfellows. With few exceptions all the known events of Defoe's life are connected with authorship. In the older catalogues of his works two pamphlets

Kirkcudbright: Possibly Defoe's Least Favourite Place in Scotland Daniel Defoe lived from (probably) September 1660 to 26 April 1731. He is best known as the prolific author of between 300 and 500 literary and political works; as one of the creators of the popular English novel; and, especially, as the author of Robinson Crusoe. Less well known was the fact that he was also at different times a merchant, a manufacturer, a rebel, a marine insurer, a swindler, a convict, a spy, a journalist and a spin doctor.
Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe was born Daniel Foe, probably in September 1660, the son of a family of Presbyterian dissenters in the parish of St Giles, London. He attended school at the Presbyterian Morton's Academy and his parents hoped he would become a Presbyterian Minister. In 1685 Defoe joined the Monmoth Rebellion or Pitchfork Rebellion against the Catholic James VII/II . This was suppressed at the Battle of Sedgemoor on 6 July 1685, and many of the surviving rebels were later executed or transported to the colonies. Defoe was able to return unnoticed to London, and keep out of the authorities' view until

The further adventures of Robinson Crusoe

Daniel Defoe is widely considered as the father of the English novel. He wrote novels, pamphlets, and thousands of essays during his lifetime. His most famous work “Robinson Crusoe” has been a favorite book for many generations of readers from all ages.
Daniel Defoe was born in London in September 1660; the first son of James and Mary Foe. (He altered his original name Foe to Defoe in 1703.)
In 1671 Defoe studied at religious academies in preparation for a career in the Presbyterian ministry.
Daniel Defoe married Mary Tuffley in 1684. They had seven children together - two sons and five daughters. In 1701 Defoe wrote “The True-Born Englishman”, the poem that brought him fame and royal favor. One year later, in 1702 he wrote the famous pamphlet “The Shortest Way with the Dissenters”, for which he was sent to prison in 1703. In 1719 Daniel Defoe published his most successful work “Robinson Crusoe”, a novel that was based partly on the memoirs of voyagers such as Alexander Selkirk. In his lat years Daniel Defoe concentrated on writing pamphlets, biographies and fiction.
