Broadside entitled 'A Dialogue between the Pillory and Daniel Defoe'
Commentary
This fictional dialogue begins with the pillard saying: 'Awake, thou busie dreamer, and arise, / Shake off th' unwilling slumber from thine eyes.' Defoe replies: 'Hail dread Tribunal! Reverend Machine, / Of awfull phyz, and formidable mein!' No publication details are on the sheet. English-born Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) was put in the pillory (or stocks), in July 1703, and this piece was probably written around that time or shortly afterwards. Defoe was subjected to this public humiliation for the publication of a pamphlet, 'The Shortest Way with Dissenters'. This was an attack on the High Church, written as if from its viewpoint, but extending its arguments to the point of ludicrousness. Both the Church and Dissenters took it seriously and were outraged when they discovered it was a hoax. When put on the pillory, however, Defoe was hailed a hero, and flowers were thrown instead of the usual rocks. He wrote a celebrated poem about his experience, 'Hymn to the Pillory', the same year. Broadsides are single sheets of paper, printed on one side, to be read unfolded. They carried public information such as proclamations as well as ballads and news of the day. Cheaply available, they were sold on the streets by pedlars and chapmen. Broadsides offer a valuable insight into many aspects of the society they were published in, and the National Library of Scotland holds over 250,000 of them.

Daniel Defoe
Dafoe's early life was not easy. He was born about 1660 in London to a poor, but hard-working butcher who was, in addition, a Dissenter from the Church of England. Because his father was a Dissenter, Daniel was unable to attend such traditional and prestigious schools as Oxford and Cambridge; instead, he had to attend a Dissenting academy, where he studied science and the humanities, preparing to become a Presbyterian minister. It was not long, however, before he decided against the ministry. Living for the rest of his life in the strict confines of a parish seemed stifling. Daniel recognized his independent, ambitious nature and wanted to be a part of the rapidly growing business world of London. So, after a short apprenticeship, he decided to set up his own haberdashery shop in a fashionable section of London. Not only did Defoe prove that he had a flair for business, but he also tried his talents in yet another field: politics. England, in 1685, was ruled by James Stuart, a Catholic, who was strongly anti-Protestant. Defoe was a staunch believer in religious freedom and, during the next three years, he published several pamphlets protesting against the king's policies. This in itself was risky, but Defoe was never a man to be stopped when he felt strongly about an issue. Shortly thereafter, James Stuart was deposed, and Defoe held several part-time advisory positions under the new king. In 1662, the economic boom that had created many rich men and increased employment suddenly collapsed. Foreign trade came to a sudden halt when war was declared with France. Among the many men whose fortunes disappeared was Daniel Defoe. Then, after several years of trying to pay off his debts, Dafoe suffered another setback: King William died, and Dafoe, still a fierce Dissenter, found himself persecuted once again. And, after he published a particularly sharp political satire, he found himself quartered in Newgate Prison for three months. He was finally released, but he had yet another ordeal to endure; he was fastened in a public pillory for three days.

Daniel Defoe
The son of a London butcher, Defoe was educated at a dissenting academy. He involved himself with various mercantile activities and was for a few years (1695-9) employed in the Glass Duty Office. He played a role in the Glorious Revolution and was in William's army of 1688. It followed, that down through the years Defoe was in favour; but, in 1702, he was to run afoul of the governing authorities on account of his pamphlet, "The Shortest Way with the Dissenters". To hold an office in England, in the days of Defoe, it was necessary by the Test Act of 1673 to attend church, an Anglican church. If a dissenter wished to hold an office, he could get around the Test Act by occasionally attending at the parish church. The Occasional Conformity Bill was proposed to counter the growing practice. The bill was aimed at holders of municipal or national office, who, after qualifying by taking the Anglican Sacrament, afterwards attended a Nonconformist service. There was a provision for fines which went in their entirety to the informer. In 1704, Defoe was pilloried for the writing of his pamphlet. The move however somewhat backfired, as, instead of throwing rotten eggs, the crowd threw flowers. After a short stay in the stocks Defoe was sent to Newgate. Defoe was not apparently imprisoned for long. In 1704, he was released. While in prison he kept up his writing; and, upon his release, he founded

DANIEL DE FOE
English author (1660-1731)
Biography:
As one of the best-known writers throughout the world for having written Robinson Crusoe in 1719, Daniel Defoe lived a very interesting life, which made him one of the most important figures of English literature.
Daniel Foe, renamed Daniel De Foe, was bron in London in September 1660. He came from a modest background and studied at Stoke Newington. He plunged into politics and trade, travelling to Spain, France, Italy and Germany but his business ventures failed and left him with large debts. However, he managed to earn a living by his pen.
In 1683 he settled down in England, where he married Mary Tuffley and had seven children. From a political point of view, he was involved in Mommouth Revellion against James II and favoured William d'Orange's ascension to the throne by joining his army in 1688.
In 1701, he wrote a poem called "The True-Born Englishman" which became the best-selling poem ever at that time. In 1702 Defoe wrote his famous pamphlet The Shortest Way with the Dissenters , mimicking the extreme attitudes of Anglican Tories. He was arrested, and while in prison, he wrote the mock ode

Today in Literary History
On this day in 1703, Daniel Defoe was arrested for writing his satirical pamphlet "The Shortest Way With Dissenters." Defoe was neither Church of England nor Catholic, but a Protestant "Nonconformist" or "Dissenter." "The Shortest Way With Dissenters" was supposed to be funny, a satire of the overzealous Anglican Tories currently in power. They had recently passed the Occasional Conformity Bill requiring everyone in political office or on the public payroll to practice Anglican worship. Defoe's anonymously written pamphlet suggested that enforcing the bill was a needless waste of time; wouldn't the shortest way with Dissenters be to execute them, and be done with it? "'Tis vain to trifle in this matter! The light, foolish handling of them by mulcts, fines, etc., 'tis their glory and advantage! If the gallows instead of the Counter, and the galleys instead of the fine were the reward of going to [their places of worship], there would not be so many sufferers! The spirit of martyrdom is over!"

window.name='reviewWindow'; The Daniel Defoe The Defoe is one of the more traditional pubs in Stokey, in terms of decor and clientele. There's an above average range of lagers and beers, which includes Red Stripe on tap, plus a good range of guest ales, all served up by friendly and polite bar staff. Despite the interior being nothing spectacular, there's a (newly refurbished) beer garden and the place seems to dissuade Stoke Newington's more familiar inhabitants: the trendy three wheeled pram driving family. Sadly, the pool table has disappeared and the choice of music can occasionally be laughably bad - Europop to 80s soft rock ballads are the mainstay, but it is getting better. After knocking it down to a two pint rating in 2006 after some truly awful food we're happy to report the menu has now changed and is vastly better. In an area with a lot of pubs, the Defoe its perfectly fine for an afternoon of good beer, good food and good company. clientele: variety of locals

Daniel Defoe
Daniel Defoe was born in 1660 to James Foe (note the spelling), a chandler in St. Giles, Cripplegate, London. In 1695 the younger Foe adopted the more aristocratic sounding "Defoe" as his surname. Defoe trained for the ministry at Morton's Academy for Dissenters, but he never followed through on this plan, and instead worked briefly as a hosiery merchant before serving as a soldier for the king during

Daniel Defoe
Author of Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe, the influential author of Robinson Crusoe , was a Presbyterian at a time that non-Anglican Protestants were known as "Dissenters." Defoe was active in Dessenter activities and wrote much that promoted Dissenter positions. From: "Daniel Defoe" article on Catharton.com website (a guide to Artists, Authors, Directors and Musicians) (http://www.catharton.com/authors/4.htm; viewed 24 October 2005): Daniel Foe (he later added the 'De' himself, perhaps because of foreign ancestors) was born in London in 1660 to James Foe, who was possibly a butcher. The Foes were Presbyterians, one of the minority Protestant groups outside the Church of England that were known as the Dissenters. He was educated at a Dissenter-friendly school and university and his father hoped he would become a priest, but Daniel dashed their hopes and became a merchant instead (apparently of hosiery)... Defoe was an extremely political man, and many of his works are satirical pamphlets on one topical issue or another. His most famous was probably 'The True-Born Englishman'. The (Catholic) King James II of England was thrown out of office by the anti-Catholic establishment and in 1689 a Protestant double monarchy was put on the throne in the shape of James' daughter Mary (known as Mary II of England) and her Dutch husband William of Orange (known as William III of England). Many people were suspicious of William as he was a foreigner, but Defoe had full confidence in him, especially as Defoe had tried to overthrow James II himself in the failed Monmouth Rebellion of 1685. 'The True-Born Englishman' made the point that all English people were of one foreign extraction or another, and it was quite reasonable to have a King from Holland.

Defoe was educated first at Dorking from 1671 and then at Morton's Academy for Dissenters in Newington Green; attending the latter with a view to becoming a Presbyterian Minister. "In 1684 Defoe married Mary Tuffley, receiving a dowry of ú3,700 but this proved an insufficient figure to keep him from bankruptcy and he was later jailed for debt. Defoe's life was extremely varied, fighting briefly in the Duke of Monmouth's rebellion of 1685 he was also a strong supporter of William of Orange in the 'Glorious' Revolution three years later.
